BEING  A COMPILATIONTHERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1           Canwe use a heavy weight curtain to block AC air from escaping? I
have removed theroom’s door long ago and now there is no space to install a new
door. Is a doorneeded if we have to install AC?

A1           Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004) Just now

The best choice is air curtain if you are very specific the cool air should
notgo to that area. If you can’t afford, you may provide a polythene
curtainwhich can be lowered when necessary. Polythene curtain is better to
thickcurtain.

Present day split AC with circuit breaker, will cool nearby area, and hot air
will be pushed sideways also if there is no obstruction.Circuit breaker will
not trip. However those open areas also will be cooledafter about 15 to 20
minutes.

I have my split AC2 ton in the hall, no door to dining area or near corridor. I
do not provideany obstruction. Afterabout 15 minutes dining area and corridor
also cooled slightly less than hall.

Q2           Whichdry fruits are rich in vitamin D?

A2           JohnKr, Knows English Oct 3

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that keeps the bonesand teeth healthy. It
also plays a major role inregulation and absorption of calcium in the body.
"Calcium strengthens thebones but is only useful in the presence of Vitamin D,
the Vitamin acts oncells in the body and allows them to absorb calcium from the
intestines. Thisensures that there is enough calcium for the body to use. Rich
in proteins, vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre, dry fruits make for a
delicious andhealthy snack. Health experts recommend eating dry fruits like
apricots, walnuts and pistachios to stay healthy.

1). Almonds are rich in anti-oxidants and have zerocholesterol, and they are a
rich source of Vitamin D, almonds are a healthysubstitute for conventional
snacking options, generally high in sugar, almondscan be enjoyed anytime.
Almonds are rich in anti-oxidants and have zerocholesterol. They are known to
provide relief from constipation, respiratoryissues and heart disorders,
besides being great for hair, skin and teeth, alsoon average if you drink 100gr
of fortified almond milk provides 9% of the DV ofvitamin D.

2). Mushrooms: If you include mushrooms in yourdiet four times a week, you'll
watch your Vitamin D levels shoot up. They canbe cooked, baked or pan fried and
turned into a tasty and healthy delight. Inorder to reap more benefits you can
sun dry them before consumption. Mushroomscan naturally produce Vitamin D when
exposed to sunlight.

3). Cashews are loaded with health benefits andare a rich source of vitamins D,
E and B6, they can also be used to bring arich texture and flavour to various
dishes.

4). Walnuts, this shelled nutty delight is extremelynutritious. It is loaded
with vital Omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fibres, proteins, anti-oxidants,
vitamins and minerals.

5). Figs, or anjeer, are referred to as the fruit ofparadise. It is a natural
source of calcium, phosphorus, phosphoric acid, andprotein. Figs are frequently
found dried, whether they are dry or soaking; theyboth have potential health
benefits. Anjeer is a wonderful source of vitaminsD, C, A, and B, which are
essential for healthy bones and skin. Calcium, vitamin D, and phosphorus are all
present in anjeer and support bone health.

Q3           IfAlexander Graham Bell invented the cordless phone why did
cordless phones notappear until much later in around 1980?

A3           Steven Haddock, LL.B. degree, 25years in litigation,
administrative law, collections, bankrupty andprofessional regulation Wed

The problem with cordless phones before 1980 wasn’tcords, it was connecting to
the telephone network.

My first boss in1985 had a mobile phone in his car, and we carried pagers.
There were all often mobile phone frequencies in Toronto, and every phone that
used themcommunicated with a single tower in a strategic place in the city to
make thecoverage area as large as possible.

Thenetwork was completely unsecure. Your console had ten buttons,
eachcorresponding to one of the ten available frequencies. If you pressed a
button, you could hear the person on that frequency. If youwanted to make a
call from your car, you went through the frequencies until youfound an open
one. Then you contacted the mobile operator who put your callthrough. If you
phoned a mobile phone, you contacted the mobile operator, whowould similarly
try to find an open frequency to put the call through.

This required phones to have a massive amount oftransmission power - similar to
a CB radio, whichmeant you had to run them off your car’s electrical system.
You had a fairsized antenna on your car, and placement of the antenna was
everything becauseyour car was literally part of the antenna and affected its
range anddirection.

As such, mobile phones were very expensive - a fewhundred dollars a month, plus
per minute fees.Otherwise, given the low number of frequencies, no-one could
use the network inany practical manner.

What changed in the 1980s wasn’t the cordless aspect, itwas the development of
the network into “cells”. Insteadof having one massive transmission/receiving
tower for a city,transmission/receiving towers became much smaller and less
powerful, extendingonly a kilometer or so. That meant your phone needed less
power too. Underlyingthis was the use of UHF frequencies that used to be used
as televisionchannels, but each television channel could accommodate thousands
of radiofrequencies. Each tower would be allocated a set of frequencies to use.
Yourphone would constantly “ping” to contact the nearest tower so the network
knewwhere you were. If you were in a car, the network could hand you off from
onetower to the next one without dropping the call.

That meant hundreds of thousands or millions of peoplecould use the network,
more or less at the same time. If the network gotcongested, you could just add
more towers. Evenbetter, the network was entirely secure - even if someone
intercepted thefrequency you were talking on, they wouldn’t be able to hear
what you weresaying.

My note- I recollect the days when mobile was introduced by2002 or so. I took a
private BPL connection andsole purpose was to talk to my son by ISD. On those
days a call for a minutecost 16-00 to Delhi, local PCOs were charging 8-00 per
three minute local call, incoming calls were charged. Many times not able to
connect due toconjestion.  When mobile phones wereintroduced in India, they
cost above 5000-00 rupees, good one about 15000-00rupees.

Q4           Whyis North India not so diverse compared to South India?

A4           Balaji Viswanathan, followsgovernment policies closely.6y

Thepremise is disputable. North India does have a lot of diversity. Punjabi
isquite different Bengali whichis quite different from Gujarati. That said,
there is a very critical geographyelement.

Look at this mapbelow. The purple region is the world's largest alluvial plain
- stretchingfrom Pakistan to Assam, fed by the rivers of Ganga, Brahmaputra and
Sindhu.Indo-Gangetic Plain

. There are hardlyany hills or other features dividing this whole massive
region, leading tocommon empires and deep cultural links.

Now, that the Indus valley is mostly gone [to Pakistan] thenorth India can be
reduced to pretty much one river -Ganges. You can start from Delhi [on the
tributary Yamuna] and get down all theway to Calcutta along a single river
crossing all major towns of northern Indiain between - Mathura, Agra,
Allahabad, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Gaya, Patna. That provides a strong
culturalcontinuity. Now, you know why Ganges is so important - it is
theconnector of north India.

In south of Vindhyas, we don't have such a plain or sucha river. There is
Kaveri, there is Godavari, there is Krishna, there isMahanadi, there is
Narmada. They are not connected andthere are plenty of natural barriers in
between. Each of thoserivers supported a different culture, language, empire.
Thus, south India wasvery rarely united under a single empire, while north
India mostly was.

My note- Very good and simple answer. I am sure one ofthe members will respond
pages againstthis answer telling  Mr. Balaji Viswanathan is immatured copying
and pasting from his books.

Q5           Whichconsumes more electricity, a laptop or a TV?

A5           Daniel Cruz, Electrical Engineer(1985–present)2y

My Dell laptop isequipped with a 65Wpower supply. My feeling is that the
average consumption is more like 30–40W.

A recentlypurchased 55″ LG TVhad an energy star sticker of $15 / year. My rough
estimate is that ittranslates to 50–70Wof power to run it.

It does look likelarger TVs do consumes a bit more power.

But… if you include the cable box, ore power definitelyis needed to run your
TV. Cable boxes consume as much as 35W of power.

Still, it isnothing in comparison to the electric heating devices. Electric
stoves run at600–1200W per burner. Hair driers consume 1600W.

In 5 minutes ofdrying hair more power is consumed than is 2 hours of TV
watching.

Q6           Asan Indian passport holder, have you travelled to Thailand on
EVOA (E-Visa onArrival) with a passport validity of less than six months but
more than 30days? Did you face any hassles from the airline and immigration
staff?

A6           Prasanna Bhalerao M. Sc. inElectronics & Physics, Fergusson
College, Pune Wed

As far as I know, this condition will not arise.

Airlines will refuse to allow you to travel if yourpassport validity is less
than 6 months. My passport wasexpiring in UK and I was told that I cannot
travel to India even when:

I was returningback to my home country.    The consulatewas closed due to COVID.

I was informedthat I must renew my ppt (as and when the embassy opened) and
then travel.

Q7           Arethere any dangers to touching an electrical wire that's not
connected toanything?

A7           Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

Question is notclear. You mean a wire for putting through electric current
purchased fromshop?

Normally wires used to put through 1.5 to 3 V DC dry cellbatteries in small
electrical equipment does not harm us even if small currentpass through.

Q8           WhenI have my fan plugged in and I adjust the speed settings, my
decorative lightsthat are next to it flash on then off very quickly, even
though they aren’tplugged in. How does this happen?

A8           Paul Montgomery,Retired electricalengineer. Founder-industral
controls Co. Oct 2

Assuming that I amunderstanding the conditions you are describing, I can think
of only oneexplanation, though I am skeptical of this being the case.

Your decorative lights must be LED lights. They takevery little energy topower.
These lights might be in a string. This forms an antenna. With theantenna close
to the fan motor controls, it picks up the noise from thecontrols and powers
the lights.

The reason they blink on and off is due to the nature of acheap motor speed
control. It chops up an electricalcurrent into tiny bits and feeds this to the
fan motor as a way of controllingthe motor speed. Each little bit of power
produces an electromagnetic fieldthat also powers the lights.

It’s the sameprinciple that allows you to wirelessly charge phones by placing
them near awireless charging station.

You might tryfinding a portable AM radio and bring it near the fan. You should
be able tohear the noise the fan control is producing as static on the radio.

This would onlyhappen with LED lights in a string. The LEDs take little power
and the wirethey are stung on providesthe antenna. Other lights would not work
as they take too much power to turnon.

I would beinterested in hearing if my guess is correct.
