AUTOMATEDTELLER MACHINE PART 1. Dear friends,
About a week back while remitting cash, I asked thecashier of the biggest private sector bank, HDFC, whether fresh 50-00 rupeecurrency is available. He looked his drawer and said “Yes”, and asked me either to correct theremitting amount or to give cash separately. I said, I will draw cash and giveand went to their modernATM Machine. They also have different type of machines, but this oneis most modern. Attached/Connected to the bank, well air conditioned, kept most clean, under security check, with instructions how to enter and use the ATM, I enteredthe ATM room. Believe it, I have not seen any other bank ATM with such bigger letters askinginformation in the touch screen. After inserting the chip based ATMcard, following instructions, and finally entering the PIN, the machine askedto take my ATM card and pushed/issued the cash through the slot. I handed over themoney to cashier, he opened a folio in the LAN computer, entered my accountnumber, name and entered the denomination of cash given by me and the same by him. I have not seen such procedures in otherbanks. Most other banks 95% perform cashtransaction only with customers and just give changes if available with them.My thinking went in to ATM, some information and incidents. I hope it may givesome interesting reading. R. Gopalakrishnan 10-10-2022. 1. ATM and HSBCBank. I gathered through Google search HSBC, one of theworld banks started their branches in India during1987. During 1993 theystarted their Branch (then British Bank of the Middle East) in Trivandrum and canvassing started for credit cards and I became acustomer. Later only I started account with the bank, and the debit card couldbe liberally used in Dubaiduring my visits. One staff would come and instruct how to use the card in theATM, how to withdraw cash etc. when debit card was given for first time. Stilllater also with all modifications, staff assisted in activating new card in their ATM. On those days there was no chip in ATM, pin change was notpossible, only after transaction, the card would return. The ATM wasassociated with bank, the bank staff would come and take out and giveour card if it was struck up. Cash deposit was possible, but not with CDM, as it isnow. If cash deposit was pressed, acover would come, we had to enter the amount, a slip would come, we had to putmoney and slip in cover and paste it( automatic pasting) and put in another slot.An acknowledgement was received. On the ATM card of HSBC it was written Any time money andfor a long time expansion of ATM as anytime money- not automatic teller machinecard. Now the Trivandrum branch is closed, my account remains with Ernakulam Branchas Zero balanceaccount 2. Manualteller system. The state bank of India had manual teller system in major branches,on submission of withdrawal form the teller would ask the accountant announcing account number last digits and amount of withdrawal. On hisreply Yes, the cheque or withdrawal was done andprobably the beginning of automatic teller system. There was limitation for upper amount by tellersystem. 3. Cash keysystem The state bank as a beginning had introduced a photoid card of the customer signed by the parenting bank and attested by the BankManager and special cheque book . Each cheque leaf wasfor a fixed amount, the customer could get cash from any other state bank the cheque leaf/leaves amount, signing on it. On issue of cheque book itself, withdrawal was shown inparenting bank for the full amount. 4. Dormanting The earliest issue of ATM cards had to be usedfrequently at least once a week, otherwisebecame dormant and customers had to go to the bank making it active. Graduallythe period has increased. I recollect IOB debit cards become dormant if notused for three months. Now most bank cards are active till one year. 5. ATM and new currency Earlier days ATMs were loaded with new currencyonly unlike today. Minimum withdrawal amount was Rs 50-00. Now it has changed to Rs 100-00. 6. Compulsory transactionslip Most ATMs of other banks than HSBC had only withdrawalfacility and slip came out indicating cash drawn and balance. Later many banksindicated only cash drawn. Account number and card number had many xxx atdifferent locations 7. Money inhand, eat dosai On those days many preferred to use debit card in shops for purchases and settlebills. Credit cards on faulting imposed very large amount as penalty payments as interest was never there. 8 Deduction withoutmoney coming. It was early 2010, the ATM at state bank of India was justrepaired, the technician and branch manager on the spot, I was the first man towith draw money on the queue, I was asked to insert the card, but money did notcome after finishing the transaction. Manager said, no problem, money will becredited back. I thought it would be credited immediately. It was lunch time, after lunch time I went to bank to withdraw cash from the counter. The familiarstaff told me, you with drew cash already in the morning, not sufficient? However I had just the required amount in Balance. I withdrew cash. I rushed to manager, of course a soft man, but askedme did you not receive cash on transaction. He was present himself and he onlyasked me to insert my card and witnessed cash did not came. He asked me to give representation and comenext day. Next day he told, transaction roll with in ATM has to be checked, itmay take next day afternoon to take it after exhausting. The third day, I wentwhen it was about closing hours, with a smile he showed me the refund in theroll, and asked me to take a print out from counter. I just withdrew 1000 rupeesand got entry in pass book. A great sign of relief. I will have a 2ndpart since more things are to be told. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Thatha_Patty" group.
