CULTURAL QA 11-2022-21

BEING  ACOMPILATION THERE MAY  BE ERRORS

Q1         Is it bad to leave a bathroom fan on?

A1          Thomas Curry, Former Sales - KitchenAppliances.2y

It’s bad if you’reworried about using electricity too much. You’rewasting
energy by leaving it on. After showering, leave it on for 20–30 minutes to
helpclear the moisture out of the air, then turn it off. In the winter, you’re
sucking heat out of the house and in the summer, you’re sucking cooledair out
of the house. Your HVAC unit is overworked and wasting energyunnecessarily.

My note- It is still better if bathroom door is keptopened after cleaning with
fragrant bathroom cleaner  and wiping. The exhaust fan can be switched OFF
after 2-3 hours and bathroom doorcan be closed.

Q2         Is it necessary to leave a window unitair conditioner off all summer
in order to save on cooling costs?

A2          Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

For perfectfunctioning irrespective of the fall, one must work theair
conditioner at least once week for one hour. Most use airconditioner in summer
and never use in other seasons. This is not correct.

Q3         How can you get rid of excess waterfrom a toilet tank without
flushing?

A3          Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)0y

The tank is filled to the level depending on the levelset and the rubber bulb
will float on that level of the siphon level.

There can be possibility the water in the tank can be dirty after  long
periods. The plumber willfirst close inlet, then lift the cover remove water
with a mug and usedetergent and clean inside . On opening the inlet, water will
be filled to thepreset level.

Q4         What are some amazing temples acrossIndia dedicated to Surya (Sun)
God?

A4          Rohit Virmani,I Love India Nov 6

10 amazing temples dedicated to Surya (Sun) Lord spreadacross India are:

1. Iconic SunTemple, Modhera, Gujarat

2. Konark SunTemple, Odisha

3. Sun Temple,Gwalior

4. Balaji SunTemple, Unao5. Sun temple at Khajuraho

6. Katarmal Suntemple ,Almora Uttarakhand

7. Suryanarayantemple Domlur, Bangalore

8. Dakshinaarka suntemple, Gaya, Bihar

9. Surya paharTemple, Assam

Q5         How can people from higher altitudes bestronger than others?

A5          Ken Saladin, Textbook author andprofessor emeritusThu

I think thegreater issue is that they tend to have better exercise tolerance or
endurance. The low oxygen level at high elevations stimulates the kidneys and
liver tosecrete a hormone called erythropoietin (EPO). EPO stimulates the red
bone marrow to produce more redblood cells (RBCs). With a higher RBC count, the
blood can transport more oxygento the muscles, and a person doesn’t fatigue as
quickly. Healthyadults at lower elevations typically have RBC counts in the
generalneighborhood of 5 million per microliter. Indigenous people of high
mountain elevations often haveRBC counts of 7–8 million RBCs/µL. They have
other geneticadaptations for altitude as well, such as barrel-chested physiques
with largerlungs; faster breathing; and wider blood vessels with greater blood
flow evenat rest. Evolutionary adaptations to high elevation differ from one
populationto another—between the highlanders of the Himalayas, Ethiopia, and
the Andes,for example.

Someendurance-trained athletes cheat the system by “doping” with EPO to have
betterfatigue-resistance than their competitors. The most infamous case of this
wasLance Armstrong, repetitive winner of the grueling Tour de France bicycle
race.He was stripped of his honors and his career was destroyed because of
EPOdoping.

The other sense of“stronger” you might be thinking of is muscular strength. I
have no certaintheory of this, but from the times I’ve hiked or just walked at
elevations of7,000 to 15,600 ft, I can well imagine that all the walking up and
down steep grades every day wouldlead to substantial muscle development at
least in the lower limbs.

Q6         Why are clay pipes used for the sewersystem instead of plastic or
PVC pipes?

A6          David Thomas, Professional Engineer,Civil, Alaska Nov 14

Because it’s made from dirt and can produced locallyanywhere in the world,
unlike modern plastics which require a petro-chemicalindustry and specialized
plants, hence hard western currency to pay for it.

Vitrified (fired at a high temperature) clay pipe is verychemically stable and
can’t rust like iron pipe ifthe wastewater is acidic. But it’s brittle and
doesn’t tolerate expansive orsettling soils. If itwasn’t bedded in enough sand,
it often breaks over time.

In the US, clay is essentially never used anymoreexcept for patching an old
system (or just use Fernco adaptors and transitionto plastic). A few
installations still use cast iron, but almost all residential DWVpiping is now
ABS or PVC.

But before ABS and PVC?There was cast iron, clay, Orangeburg (a horrible
mixture of tar and woodfibers) and even wire-wound wood pipe, especially during
the war to save ironfor the war effort.

My note- Hard quality PVC pipes are now used in Chennai-India.

Q7         What do you think of steam trains?

A7          Susanna Viljanen, Works at AaltoUniversity Wed

The engineer insideme says the steam trains are incredibly energy inefficient,
maintenanceintensive, dangerous, polluting, unreliable, have short lifespans
and prone tomalfunctions - including BLEVEs.

The choo-choo said“achoo!” and sneezed the superheater out.

The little girl inside me says steam locomotives areincredibly handsome, they
feel like living organisms, they make a nice soundwhen they operate and they
are exciting when they work, and they are far moreromantic than diesel or
electric locomotives.

Junailijan pilliilimoo jo viilsi - priiip! - ilimoo jo viilsi

Raotakylykikukkokiskoloilla kiilsi - Lentävä Kalakukko!

I am glad the steamlocomotives have been phased out - but I am equally glad
reasonably many have survived inmuseums and heritage railways so we can get a
feeling on what it was to travel onsteam. It is simply awesome!

Q8         Has Indian railway improved?

A8          Kanthaswamy Balasubramaniam, Lawyer Wed

Sure-No Doubt the IndianRailways have Improved tremendously over the last 10–15
years

However once againlike all things Indian - the Noise to Achievement Ratio is
still 70:1

What is Noise toAchievement Ratio - It is the amount of Hype and Bragging
against the RealValue of an Achievement

Either theAchievement has to be equivalent to the Hype or the Hype has to be
less

Hasthe Indian Railways Improved? Sure. So have Buses, So have Flights, So
haveRoads

I mean come on -India is moving forward

All Nations are -barring a few nations which were unlucky enough to have USA
bother about themenough to destroy them completely.

I remember the PTC Buses in the 1980s and today i see theVolvos zooming around
and the difference is obvious.

In my day an Average Flight was delayed at least an Hour orTwo for Take off -
Today most flights take off perfectly on time.

Similarly theRailways-Ticketing, Refunds, Station Logistics, Rail Schedules
have allimproved tremendously

But the Talk!!!!!The Hype!!!!!! My God!!!

Its almost like theBJP has just built a Railway Network to Beat the Japanese
and Chinese HighSpeed Railways

Wherever you turn-Vande Bharat Express, Vande BharatExpress and Vande Bharat
Express

Plus 20,000 Tweetsevery day in the same format

I was travelling on Railway, suddenly i saw the fanwas not working so i sent a
tweet and in the next station 200men came and promptly repaired the fan. Wow
India!!!!

I was travelling bytrain , two men came into my platform, i sent a tweet and
the Railway Policecame and took them away

Plus ourFavorite Quora Fan boy Club posting every day on the Greatness of
IndianRailways

Wow!!! Look at thatTrain!!!! Wow!!! Look at those Coaches!!!

As though this were some Fifth Rate Village seeing aTrain for the First Time
rather than a $3.3 Trillion Economy

The Implication issimple - That Somehow Modiji and BJP revolutionized the
Railways singlehandedly and that beforethem the Railways was junk.

IT WAS NOT

The IndianRailways has been improving and improving continuously

The Boys working inthe Railways from the Ticket Collectors to the Inspectors to
the Engineers tothe Station Masters to the Superintendent to the DRMS

Theyhave managed to keep building our Railways to manage a 1.4 Billion
Populationwithin the confines of Good, Incompetent and Utterly Incompetent
Ministers

And theImprovements are Tremendous as i just listed

Better Coaches    More Tracks    Far more Prompt

Better Ticketingand Refund Systems

And yet you haveflaws like

→ Food Quality →Catering Quality→ Cleanliness Quality→ Station Crowding

→ Lack ofNetworking - Integrated State Transport Policy

→ SuitableTransportation Allowance for Pets→ Cargo

And i believe theRailway Boys are working on it. They are an asset to the
Nation in providing aPublic service.Well done Indian Railways!!!

But God the Hype!!!!!! So much Hype !!! On a 24 X 7 Basis regularly

Modiji changed theRailways of India

Modiji introducedso many Kms of Railway Lines- as though he personally
envisioned the railwaylines and laid them out and not some enterprising Railway
Engineers orOfficials at the highest levels

Our Railways havechanged so much since BJP came over. Its always the HYPE that
outweighs everyachievement by at least 100 times

So Yes IndianRailways have Improved Tremendously and there is a Lot of room for
moreImprovement.

Please for GodsSake Stop Hyping the Railways as though somehow the BJP made the
Railways intoa Japanese High Speed System

I never recall somuch Hype under Dr Singh or Mr Vajpayee - when Railways
transformation begun. They Quietly did their Job

My note- By taking out concession for senior citizenperhaps raily way would
have gained in crores for new projects. Indian railwaysis always improving, not
under any ministry as told by the person answered.

Q9         How double upgradation is possible inIndian Railways, though I have
seen you can get seat upgrade to one higherclass (like SL to 3AC) but how SL
class tickets can be direct upgraded to 2AC?

A9          Sanjiv Mitragotri, Railways user andoperations2h

Upgradation to higher classes is not restricted to asingle class higher than
the booked class.

Upgradation is afunction of availability of vacant berths/seats in an upper
class and the lowerclasses having a higher demand than the available berths,
which results in awaiting list over there. Upgradationis allowed to only those
passengers who have explicitly provided their consentto be upgraded.

So whenan upgradation happens if there are no vacant berths in the immediate
higherclass, but available in the subsequent higher class, then the upgradation
isprovided in to the available higher class.

The main purpose ofupgradation system was to maximise utilisation of capacity
available on thetrain irrespective of class. If an upper class has vacantberths
and the lower classes have waiting list, by upgrading the lower classesto
higher classes results in a win-win situation for railways as well as
individualsand increased revenues for railways. Trust this clarifies

My note- But whatis the reasoning for upgrading a wait listed person and not a
person tookticket before 2 months and opted for up-gradation?Computer should be
able to do the proper upgradation.

Q10               Why is belly fat so hard to losein adults?

A10        Thomas Johnson,I work as a medicalresearcher. Nov 14

Belly fat is acommon area of concern for all. Be it men or women, both struggle
to keep the mid-section of theirabdomen flat. But shedding inches from the
midriff has never beeneasy. No matter which exercises you try or whatever diet
you follow, the stubborn belly fat doesnot budge that easily. This problem
becomes more common once you hit the agemark of 40.

🔴 Reasons why losing belly fat is hard after40 :-

The major reason is the loss of muscle mass. As weage, we lose our muscle mass,
which slows down our metabolism and we begin toburn fewer calories. Both these
factors make it harder to shed kilos, especially from the midsection.

Another reason is the hormonal changes. Bothweight gain and weight loss are
driven by our hormones.

Women generally store more subcutaneous (soft) fat in theabdominal and thigh
area and men store more visceral (hard) fat in theabdominal area. This starts
happening when they hit puberty and remains thesame till they reach 40.

After this age, hormonal changes take place in both men and women. Women go
through perimenopause and menopause and thefat storage tendencies shift. They
gain more hard abdominal fat due to lowertestosterone and estrogen levels and
men gain more soft fat.

How to lose belly fat effectively after 40

To shed kilos afterthe age of 40, you need to make some extra effort. You have
to change yourweight loss tricks in order to shed kilos faster.

Here are 3 ways to maximise your weight loss as youage:-

🔸Reduce stress level

Stress is the majorcontributor to weight gain. So, managing your stress level
is the mosteffective thing you can do to shed some kilos. Try yoga and
meditation forthat.

🔸Add compound exercises in your routine

With age, mostpeople exercise less. As a result, they burn fewer calories and
shed fewerkilos. You need to add compound exercise in your routine to burn more
caloriesand build strength. Compound exercise works on multiple exercises in
one time.

🔸Dietary changes

You need to takeextra care of your dietary habits when trying to lose weight at
an older age.Include a plant-based source of protein in your diet. Avoid
processed andrefined food items.

🟡 Why losing belly fat is important

Losing belly fat ismore important than losing fat from any other part of the
body. The visceralfat that remains deep inside the abdomen is harmful to health
in many ways. Itis linked with an increased risk of breathing problems, heart
disease, Type 2diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
