CULTURAL QA 11-2022-24 BEING A COMPILATIONTHERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 If a train is fully booked, can onecancel a wait-listed ticket in Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation(IRCTC)? A1 Prasanna Bhalerao, Knows abouttrains.23h A ticket booked viaIRCTC app is an online ticket. If the original status was WL and itremains WL at the time of chart preparation (4 hours before train departure),then such a ticket is automatically cancelled in the system and money isrefunded. So there is no need to cancel manually. But if you wish cancel before 4 hours of train departure, then you mustdo so yourself in the app My note- If a ticket is booked at any Railwayreservation counter and confirmed, it has to be cancelled in any reservationcounter 4 hours prior to departure of the train for refund. If one has gone to some hill resorts by bus afterreaching a railway station, you have no means to cancel some times ifyou are not able to reach the station in time, the counter reservation tickets, remains reserved and money is lost. If it is booked via IRTC on line, he can cancel and getrefund. Q2 Can you use two hoses on one airconditioner unit? A2 Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now I hope the question is about extending the outlet waterhose. It can be extended to the desired length. Now connecting hoses are available as coil, one canpurchase the desired length and connect. These hose coils are availablein Chennai, India Q3 What is the minimum number of liquorbottles that we can travel in Indian Railways? A3 Prasanna Bhalerao, Knows abouttrains.18h Minimum number ofliquor bottles while travelling in the train? Zero, if you please. If you meant maximum, zero again. Carrying alcoholicbeverages on the Indian train is prohibited. Q4 Did all steam locomotives havetenders? How did they work? A4 Paul Jacob, Veteran of many HeritageRailways, as well as luxury rail15h As Greg’s answer, Tank Engines were designed forshorter routes, or shunting activities, where the ability to run equallyforward or backward was useful. Tender engines usually ran longer non-stop runs, usingWater Troughs to pick up water to refill the Tender (except onmost Southern Railway routes, where distances were shorter. Flying Scotsman went one further for longer runs, and hadTenders with a Service Corridor to allow the crew to be relieved withoutstopping. It also used two tenders at times. My note- Steam engines are still in vogue in somecountries. It has not become obsolete as far as my information goes. Q5 Which is the best south Indian cityamong Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai? A5 Bharani Ela, Lives in Chennai, TamilNadu, India Nov 2 Outsider Preference: Bengaluru Hyderabad Chennai Infrastructure: Chennai Hyderabad Bengaluru Weather: Bengaluru Hyderabad Chennai Service sector Jobs : Bengaluru Hyderabad Chennai Manufacturing jobs: Chennai Bengaluru Hyderabad Wealth: Bengaluru Chennai Hyderabad Public transport: Chennai Bengaluru Hyderabad Cosmopolitanism: Bengaluru Hyderabad Chennai Weekend getaways: Bengaluru Chennai Hyderabad Cost of living (High to low) Bengaluru Chennai Hyderabad Q6 Is it okay to use a 1 HP airconditioner for a 15 sqm room? A6 Gary Ahlers, Lapidary, HVAC Design,Astrophotographer, Constr'n (1975–present)1y Hp is not ausual rating for A/C units. Generally speaking, 1 hp equals a rating of 12,000Btus. A 15 sqm room withnormally insulation and one exterior wall will require a 6,000 Btu unit (1/2 hp) so your unit is twice the size needed. I would notrecommend you use a 1 hp for several reasons. The systemwill cool the room quickly and shut off. The unit will then cycle on and offfrequently causing increased expense in electricity (each star up requires5x the power) and increased wear on the unit. If the humidity is high, there isnot enough time for proper dehumidification. Basically, you will spend a lot more in running costs for less comfort. Q7 What is the department in railwayswith the best work-life balance under the Indian Railways? A7 Apratim Mukherjee, Former NTA atIndian Railways (2021–2022)Sat Being a Apprenticetrainee in Indian Railway, I think I have seen IR very closely than others whoare not associated with it and I have a very good relationship with some groupd staffs to officer rank holders. More than that I have seen so many people alongwith DRM, ADRM, DME, Sr DME, ADME and so many respected officers. I saw themvery carefully, how they talk and behave with others. How they work and what isthere work which will help me answering this question. So coming to the question. Railway has so many departmentlike mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Electronic/Signal,DRM and Neutral(who observes if all the works are performing with railwayguidelines or not and report to the ministry in Delhi) My training was in Mechanical department so I sawthis department more than all of the above mentioned department. I was under CMS( Chemical MetallurgicalSuperintendent ) SSE equivalent. My work was in Workshop as well as in Office. So I have seen both work culture. According tome if you are looking for good work life balance in IR, it is not like that ofPSUs. You have to work hard in Railways no matter in which department you areworking. And ofcourse with great responsibility. You haveto prepare for 24/7. Your leave can be cancelled anytime if there is anyemergency or work pressure unless you are sick or other cases. Those who areworking with lower grade pay has to work hard physically whereas those who arein higher pay as compared to those has to go through very mental pressure. Andtheir main work is to supervision regarding the job. I am talking about SSEsand JEs whom I have seen very closely. Every monththere is inspection from higher authorities in every department. And you haveto prepare for that. In IR there are lot of postsvacant at this time and I think that's why the pressure is on its everyemployee very much and it should be. If government is paying you, it's yourresponsibility to give it back by your performance and help our nation to grow. But one thing I would like to say that IR pays it'semployees a very good and reasonable amount of salaries obviously not comparedto IOCL and other PSUsbut a social status and a security of job unless you are not done anythingagainst it's guidelines and rules. Q8 Why do pilots have to say 'clearedfor takeoff' before they can take off? Is there any real danger if they forgetto say it? A8 Andrew McGregor, Flown several typesof light aircraft. Nov 17 That’s a read back. Certaincommunications on the radio require the receiving party to ‘read back’ whatthey heard, to make sure it has been correctly communicated. Take offclearance is one such communication. So the pilotwould say that to acknowledge to ATC that they heard the clearance. The danger wouldcome from taking off when ATC had not yet cleared you for take off. That’s areally serious mistake. If you don’t read the clearance back? ATC are supposed to repeat the clearance until you docorrectly read it back, but if they’re busy and see you start the roll anyway, they may not bother. Other clearances, they will keep trying to get a read back for sure. Read backs workboth ways too; sometimes ATC have to read back what a pilot said to them. Lessoften, but it happens. Q9 Is it unhygienic to not wash your bedsheets regularly? How often should they be washed? A9 Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now Either it is bedspreads or bed sheets, or pillow covers, pillow slips, as one use dead skin will fallfrom body. And using for a week , itwould be soiled. All lodgings replace bed spreads, bed sheets, pillowcover, towels etc when one occupant leaves In collegesthe items are replaced once a week with a washed one. In hospitals depend on the condition of patientthese things are replaced even every day. So using unwasheditems told above is not hygienic and lead to contagious diseases. It is bestduring washing to add germs killing liquids like Dettol etc. Q10 Does Finland have a good rail system? A10 Nicholas Stone, Extensive life longinterest in public transport. Wed I have travelledacross Finland by train on several occasions. In my opinion, Finland has a goodrail system. For historical reasons, Finland uses the Russian 1,524 mmgauge. Consequently, there are only international passenger trains services toneighbouring Russia. Across Finland, long distancepassenger trains are either InterCity2 double deckers, tilting trains orsleeper trains. Helsinki does have a commuter network including a newer railservice to Helsinki-Vantaa, the country’s main airport. Services and frequencies reflect the spread of populationacross the country. There is one 76 km high speed line insouth of Finland allowing trains to operate at 220 km/h between Kerava andLahti. Elsewhere trains seldom exceed 180 km/h. A double deck Inter City train crosses Finland in thedistinctive green and while livery of VR, Finnish State Railways.Imade a winter trip between Tampere and Helsinki, enjoying the snowy scenery ona double deck train. Tickets were bought online, with an English languageoption. The train wasspacious, clean and punctual. A novel feature was a booth at the end ofthe carriage allowing mobile calls to be made unobtrusively. Most trains are operated by the state owned VR (ValtionRautatiet). Special mention must be made of the Allegratrain from Helsinki to St Petersburg, which is jointly operated by VR and RZDRussian State Railways. Immigration and customs checks are carried out onboard. I took this train from Russia to Finland and enjoyed the experience -especially as the train slows and crosses the border marked by a clearing inthe forest.
