SINK

Dear friends,

In today’s cultural QA there is a QA about sink. Whileincluding it I thought of
writing about sink, a subject thought for a long timeto write. Nothing very
serious, but some informative points are there in this posting.

Throughout my service in Tamilnadu from 1967 till1990, I was living in rented
homes except at Kodaikkanal. At Kodaikkanal in the newlyconstructed quarters I
had kitchen platform RCC, chimney of old type and sinkof make kadappa stone.
LPG was not available while I was working there during1974’s.

I lived inquarters at RTTC from my joining Kerala circle in 1991 till my
retirement in2004. It was quick time construction quarters with cement
flooring, kitchenplatform with RCC and sink made of ceramic and wash basin was
there in dininghall with Indian style toilet. By 2002 hall flooring alone
changed to mosaic.

1. Sink madeof   ceramic, stainless steel and kadappa stone.

While I was constructing my home in Chennai during2005, I was living in the
upstairs of a home in the small kitchen, a ceramicsink was there.   I could see
in a newlystarted granite store, sinks made of kadappa stone. I thought vessels
can becleaned in it outside home, fitting it below a tap provided either for
washbasin or sink. But my wife agreed for a kadappa table for drying vessels,
no kadappa sink on the ground worms may appear. Evenwhen I constructed the
house in Chennai in 2005, there were sinks with drierplatform. The contract
agreement was for two stainless steel sinks in kitchenand work area.

2. My buildercum engineer came with two large stainless steel sinks in his car.

One day evening when works were about to complete mybuilder came with two large
hard board packs in his car. He told they aresinks.

3. Installationof sinks

After RCC platform for kitchen was erected, he madeprovision for sinks in the
platform itself. After laying granite slab over it,adjusting the level the
sinks were fitted. In the kitchen since platform hadmore width, he pasted two
granite stripes to adjust the sink in the end ofplatform. These sinks had no
drier platform. I never felt it as a drawback.

4. Remainingwith a tap provision

The area which the engineer thought of low qualitysink for washing outside work
area, the water tap was provided for anymodification at a later date.

When there is slight  rain, this tap is used by servant ladies tosit in the
step from work area and clean vessels. This area is coveredpartially by the
shade over the door.

5. Sinks anduse

The sink inside the kitchen is very convenient fortaking water in vessels for
cooking. It is provided with a filter and flexibletap. This sink is used for
washing vegetables. A towel is provided near it for swipinghands or wiping
water falling in kitchen platform.

The sink in work area is used to keep vessels forcleaning. Unless too much rain
is not there vessels are taken out in a plasticbasin, after cleaning kept in a
drain container made with stainless steel rods.

When servant lady avails her leave, my wife cleansessential vessels in it. Here
a stainless steel stand is provided to keep soap, detergent etc. Provision is
given for putting towel. Here also a small towel isprovided.

6. Servant lady’squickness.

The first servant lady was aged; it took time to takeback the vessels in the
metal drier from the kadappa platform. So no water fellfrom vessels in the
granite floor. In the last four years a quick worker not soaged servant lady is
employed. Though she brings the cleaned vessels in themetallic tray, water from
tray falls on the granite slab and create stains. Thesestains though cleaned by
servant lady applying cleaning liqids, it remains mostly.

7. Removingstains by rubbing sandpaper

Periodically rubbing with sand paper, stains come outas powder, swiping it and
applying small quantity of oil, the granite appearsshining. After a time same
has to be repeated.

8. Advantage ofdrier platform with sink

Vessels will be much more, so again the cleanedvessels are kept in a tray with
draining facility over the drainer. My son’sand daughter’s flats have drainer,
but no shining.   Either the quality of steel is not good or noeffort is taken
for cleaning the drain area.

9. Drainer withtwo sinks

I have seen this also in the local shops. But sinksare small. But the idea of
keeping one sink for washing, one sink for keeping usedvessels, and drier is
good. Only thing space should be there for installing it.If sinks are small,
used vessels will be dumped in both.

10. Drainerslots to sink

>From the drainer, water from cleaned vessels will falldown on the  areas with
>depth and extendedup to sink. So remaining water from cleaned vessels  will
>flow to sink.

11. Replacingthe existing cover in   the outlet

Most metal shops are having semispherical cups havingholes in a net fashion
made in  quality stainlesssteel fit to the outlet area, in the middle  of sink.
So replacing the existing cover with large holesover the outlet of sink with
this, all wastes will remain in the cup. This canbe taken out and put  in waste
box. Advantageis no blocking in the outlet pipe due to these waste pieces. The
cup is available in fiber also, but not good; it will float when water is
poured in to sink

12. Periodicalcleaning

Either the outlet from sink is connected to sockpit ormunicipal /corporation
waste line, smell will be appearing in sink. Toeliminate this to certain
extent, the outlet from sink is connected to drainpipe via a metal plate
covered holes. This plate hasgot provision to insert the exit  fromsink and
number of holes. These holespermit air circulation and reduce foul smell.

Drain cleaning powder will eliminate to very greatextent if applied once a
month. If smell is still there diluted phenol can bepoured. Even keeping a
phenol bottle near it in a shelf will spread phenolsmell in the area.
