I He did not yield:5 hrs ago: NEW DELHI: After sparking a political row
with his comments criticising 'The Kashmir Files' as a "propaganda" film,
Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid has said he stands by everything he said
because "in countries that are increasingly losing the ability to speak the
truth, someone needs to speak up". At the closing ceremony of the 53rd
edition of Iffi this week, Lapid had said that he and his fellow jurors
were "disturbed and shocked" by the inclusion of 'The Kashmir Files' in the
artistic competition segment of the film festival since it was "a
propaganda, vulgar movie". He was slammed for his remarks by Israeli
ambassador to India Naor Gilon, consul general Kobbi Shoshani and exIsrael
ambassador to India Daniel Carmon. Indian juror Sudipto Sen, however,
distanced himself from Lapid's comments calling them his "personal
opinion". Unfazed by the criticism, Lapid clarified that his comments
didn't "express one position or another on the conflict in Kashmir ''. He
said he spoke because he felt it is his "duty" to speak his mind as the
president of the international competition section jury since he "knows how
to recognise propaganda disguised as a movie", and because while it was
not a crime to make bad films, what Vivek Agnihotri had directed was
"crude, manipulative and violent". "Making bad films is not a crime, but
this is a very manipulative and violent propaganda film," Lapid said in an
interview with Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz. "The truth is that I also
couldn't help but imagine a similar situation that might happen one day
soon in Israel, and I would be happy that in such a situation the head of a
foreign jury would be willing to say things as he sees them. In a way, I
felt it was my duty to the place that invited me," he said. Lapid also said
he was not surprised by the outrage over his remarks. "Since this is a film
that the Indian government encourages, I assume that the government there
is not happy about it. But is a country only about its government? I assume
not," he said. The award-winning filmmaker also alleged that the jury had
learnt that 'The Kashmir Files' was "pushed into the official competition"
of the festival. "We learned that the film was pushed into the official
competition of the festival due to political pressure... I feel as a
foreigner who arrives there, you have an obligation to say the things that
the people who live there may have a harder time saying," In such contexts
I don't believe in secrets and whispers. If you stand on stage and are
asked to speak, what will you talk about? Only about the beaches you saw
and the food you ate?" he said.
KR Can I Talk about Entebbe as he spoke?. A jimmick?. Intrusion in
another state/. Can I talk about only beaches I saw and food I consumed?.
II The Madras High Court on Wednesday quashed one First Information
Report (FIR) registered against former Municipal Administration Minister
S.P. Velumani of the AIADMK in 2021 on corruption charges, but refused to
quash another FIR registered this year on similar charges.
A Division Bench of Justices P.N. Prakash and R.M.T. Teekaa Raman said they
were quashing the FIR that had been registered against the former Minister
on the basis of complaints lodged by Arappor Iyakkam, DMK leader R.S.
Bharathi and a report of the Comptroller and Accountant General (CAG).
This quashing would be applicable only with respect to the former Minister
and not the other accused since it had been registered after the
Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) conducted a preliminary
inquiry in 2019, filed a negative report on not finding any material to
register a case against him and this report had been accepted by the
government in January 2020.
It was only after a change in the ruling dispensation in the State with the
DMK taking up the mantle in May 2021 that the DVAC took note of the 2020
CAG report too and registered a FIR in August 2021 on the basis of the
complaints lodged by the NGO Arappor Iyakkam and Mr. Bharathi in 2018
alleging large scale irregularities in the award of Corporation contracts.
III Chennai: The Madras high court has confirmed the conviction of two
accused in the case relating to the Kumbakonam school fire tragedy, in
which 94 children died and several injured. The court, however, modified
the sentence awarded by the trial court to that of the period of sentence
already undergone by the accused.
Partly allowing the appeal filed by Pulavar Palanisamy, the founder of the
Sri Krishna Middle School, where the fire broke out, a division bench
comprising Justices M. Sathyanarayanan and V.M. Velumani modified the life
sentence awarded to him. Similarly dismissing the appeal filed by R.
Vasanthi, a cook, the bench modified the sentence of five years awarded by
the trial court. In both the cases,“ the appeal is partly allowed and the
conviction is confirmed. Sentence modified to one of the period already
undergone by the appellant during the investigation, trial and post
conviction”, the bench added.
The bench acquitted the remaining seven accused, who were convicted and
sentenced by the trial court in Thanjavur. The bench also dismissed the
appeal filed by the state government against the order of the trial court,
acquitting 11 other accused in the case. (OLD)
IV *New Delhi: *
A Rohini Sessions Court has acquitted seven accused persons after 11 years
in a murder case of a businessman in the Wazirpur industrial area in the
national capital.
Additional Sessions Judge Kiran Gupta, in the judgement passed on May 5,
said that it is evident that none of the accused persons were arrested from
the spot. The accused were arrested in the present case on the basis of
their disclosure statements which were recorded during the custody of the
police and nothing incriminating has been recovered, so, the disclosure
statements of the accused are inadmissible.
After the conclusion of the whole trial proceedings, the Judge said that
all the accused persons are acquitted of the charges framed against them.
"The investigating officers have failed to recover the weapon used in the
commission of the offence. The weapons recovered during the investigation
are not the weapon of offence. The accused persons were neither known to
the complainant nor the other witnesses and the witnesses had the occasion
to see many of the accused persons for the first time during their
testimony in the court after the date of the incident. None of the
witnesses had disclosed any distinctive feature of any of the accused
persons in their statements," the court noted.
Advocate Ravi Drall appeared for accused Neeraj and Umar Ali and argued
that no case is made out against the accused persons as none of the accused
persons were arrested at their disclosure statement recorded by police when
the accused were already in custody in another case.
There are material contradictions and improvements which surfaced during
the cross-examination of the witness. Further the recovery of the weapon
shown from the possession of the accused Neeraj didn't match from the
bullets found on the spot.
V Many more like this shifting the blame on the executives, but
wanting the govt either not to react against the public or must have done
like this and that; it is easier to be a boss than the real honest worker.
If you have not seen the almost reality of AMIT LODHA IPS now Senior
officer of Bihar, in whose case the reality was tucked down by the law and
the Political powers. Unless all the 4 pillars pull the nation honestly
dharma will never exist and theer will not be any fear; those who fear the
power threatens an innocent of contempt. Without proper protection it is
difficult to execute the law which favours only the villains in any
nation.
Hence only we have to depend only on Brahmam to exist happily. KR
