1. Reply paid card

Reply paid card costs double the value of postal card. The card has a replica of
the card separated sometimes by dots. It enabled theperson receiving could
reply using it, and dropping in any postal box.

Mostly the sender used to enter his address also inthe reply card. This enabled
the card is used to send reply to him only. Ifthis was not done, some experts
used the card to post information to some otherpeople.

When postal cards were out of stock, many used to getreply paid card, cut
through the dotted lines/middle and used as two cards.

2. Postal card

Though postal card’s main aim was to help the poor tosend information by post,
it was also used for many other uses.  This continues even today.

At one time much important information was sent bycard, registering it.
Sometimes with acknowledgement card attached. So thereceiver could not deny he
did not receive the information since information itself was inthe card. This
was more with court cases. After inland has appeared many changed it to Inland
registered post,acknowledgement due.

Still the postal card price is 50-00 paisa.

3. Acknowledgementcard.

This was mainly used by applicants or by offices alongwith a registered
article. Extra charge is paid for the acknowledgement card. The receiver had to
sign it and return to postman/woman. Acknowledgement cardis filled up with
details of the document send and applicants/office address. Itis returned to
the addressee.

I recollect sending applications of my son for admissionin engineering colleges
by registered post acknowledgement due. This gave confidence;the application
was received by the departments of universities like MadrasUniversity, Anna
University, and Annamalai University etc.

Incidentally Annamalai University was kept at highstandard.  I recollect my
physics bookshad many questions from Annamalai University as reference and for
answering. Ihad my collegiate education under Kerala University and graduate
degree from KeralaUniversity in 1964.

4. Visiting card.

Visiting cards mostly keep a standard size. Thequality may change, but size
remained almost 3.5”x2”. Many persons, companies, small and large keep visiting
card. Nowadays even in conversation, if a person’smobile number has asked, he
may take from pocket /purse/table his visitingcard.

There is visiting card file available now in stationeryshops, for ready
reference many keep them in file, inserting in small transparentfolders.

Earlier card came in thick paper, present day cardshave a thin film of plastic
over it, very difficult to tear if not required anymore like company is closed
etc.

5. Cash key card.

Before the commissioning of ATMs, the state bank ofIndia had cash key card. The
bank issued cash key cheques, and an ID card withphoto and signature on front
side and bank issuing information on the otherside. The cheques were for fixed
amount. For the value of cheques, amount wasdeducted from the account while
issuing. One could en-cash these cheques on thespot, visiting any state bank of
India on tour. I was having such a card and cheques;it enabled me to draw money
without carrying in hand while going over to Delhi.Cash key card became
obsolete after ATMs have started.

6. ATM card and debitcard

There is a big difference between the two. All debit cards can be used atATMs
to draw money, used at merchant outlets to purchase items etc.

But if one opt ATM card, it can be used onlyat ATMs.

I have learnt the first card was diner’s club card inIndia.

Before merchant outlets accepting payments by cards, all cards were used to draw
money from ATMs.

At one time the drawing limit was very muchirrespective of the type of card.
Now the ATM drawing limit is very muchreduced and varies with types of cards.

The debit card of HSBC could easily be used in anyforeign country, now the card
issued from India, bank has to approve for usingit in foreign countries.

While most banks approve automatically while the cardis issued, some banks
approve on line transactions.

Till recently on line transaction was more simplified, the card used information
was stored by firms and through an OTP, the card wasselected. Now observing
some misuse, every time card details are to be enteredfor transactions as per
directions from reserve bank of India.

The ATM and Debitcards have to be signed by the person to whom it is issued
before using it inthe back side where provision is made.

For using ATM card, earlier PIN was issued some timesby banks or came by post.
Pin was fixed. It could not be changed. Later optioncame to change pin as
desired by the customer. Now PIN is generated by customerin the ATM.

The ATM procedures have also changed. In early time, thedebit/ATM card was
pulled inside ATM till transaction was over. Then it gotreleased

Later the card had to be simply inserted and taken outquickly or swiped

Now the card will be partially held till transactionis over. Then one has to
take back his card.

Cash withdrawn had to be taken out within seconds atone time; otherwise it was
pulled in to ATM. Now the cash is never pulled in to.

7. Credit card

The credit card pushed on customers is very useful ifthe monthly bill is paid
full in time.

If paid partially, or not paid, the ruin starts there.Credit card interestis
very very high.

At one time credit cards had no pin, it was simplyswiped, and credit slip had
to be signed and given. It was checked with signatureat back of the card. But
many firms did not check much the signature, and ifcard was lost, it had to be
blocked immediately. Anyone could misuse it

Now the cards have pin and some cards have option tochange the pins. Foreign
banks have six digits pin for credit and debit cards.Cards of banks in India
have four digits pin only for debit/credit cards.

8 Cash or card?

Now 99% shops accept credit/ debit cards only.Counterfoil of amount taken is
given. One has to ensure the correct bill amountis only paid in our presence
the machine has to be operated.

Even for home delivery machine is brought by medicalstores etc.

9. Carrying cards

At any time cards can get lost. Make sure a Xerox ofthe card is kept to block
the card, with card number. If at all one has manycards, carry 1 0r two only at
a time. There can be theft at home, never keeppin with card. Cards may be kept
at different places if feasible.
