Affiliations expand PMID: 19158816 :Many major rival models of the origin
of the Hindu caste system co-exist despite extensive studies, each with
associated genetic evidences. One of the major factors that has still kept
the origin of the Indian caste system obscure is the unresolved question of
the origin of Y-haplogroup R1a1*, at times associated with a male-mediated
major genetic influx from Central Asia or Eurasia, which has contributed to
the higher castes in India. Y-haplogroup R1a1* has a widespread
distribution and high frequency across Eurasia, Central Asia and the Indian
subcontinent, with scanty reports of its ancestral (R*, R1* and R1a*) and
derived lineages (R1a1a, R1a1b and R1a1c). To resolve these issues, we
screened 621 Y-chromosomes (of Brahmins occupying the upper-most caste
position and schedule castes/tribals occupying the lower-most positions)
with 55 Y-chromosomal binary markers and seven Y-microsatellite markers and
compiled an extensive dataset of 2809 Y-chromosomes (681 Brahmins, and 2128
tribals and schedule castes) for conclusions. A peculiar observation of the
highest frequency (up to 72.22%) of Y-haplogroup R1a1* in Brahmins hinted
at its presence as a founder lineage for this caste group. Further,
observation of R1a1* in different tribal population groups, existence of
Y-haplogroup R1a* in ancestors and extended phylogenetic analyses of the
pooled dataset of 530 Indians, 224 Pakistanis and 276 Central Asians and
Eurasians bearing the R1a1* haplogroup supported the autochthonous origin
of R1a1 lineage in India and a tribal link to Indian Brahmins. However, it
is important to discover novel Y-chromosomal binary marker(s) for a higher
resolution of R1a1* and confirm the present conclusions. (West to want to
brand that Indian brahmins got the intelligence only from the CAUCASIANS?

3        First, some of the big (and not so big) companies in the West are
led by CEOs of Indian origin. Indian talent finding space in the Western
corporate world is a normal affair, considering the fact that Indians are
granted around two-third of America’s H-1B visas for highly skilled
workers. Many of these Indian CEOs in the United States are Brahmins.

        Second, Indian boardrooms are dominated by traditional business
castes known as Baniyas. In India, the Brahmins dominate many arenas like
academia, science and law, but not top corporate positions. It cites a
study from 2010 that says 93 per cent of board members in India come from
“forward” castes. Of them, 46 per cent are Vaishyas or Baniyas.

       Third, //: One, businesses in India favour those with established
networks (mostly Baniyas and, in some cases, the Parsis). This led Brahmins
to emigrate. Two, Brahmins have a “tradition of bookishness”, due to which
they easily pass exams and enter the land of opportunities. Three, Brahmins
are forced to leave the country because of affirmative-action policies in
India.

         Economists Magazine writes” Blaming reservations for the migration
of the Brahmins is beyond comprehension. Since *The Economist* column is
talking about the corporate sector, it must be noted that despite
long-pending demands

the Indian corporate sector has never been under the ambit of reservation
policies. Unlike the US and European countries, Indian corporations do not
follow any affirmative action or diversity programme. To blame the
reservation for Brahmin migration to the West is a travesty of logic.”  But
is it not a fact and the Mag conclusion is lacking logic and embellishing
the travesty of truth?

4    Siddhartha  Mukherjee says, we do not need the hypothesis of white
genetic superiority to explain the phenomenon ( vide Para 2 being denied).
The self-esteem and intellectual confidence of blacks have been so battered
over the decades that they have been conditioned to believe that they would
perform poorly in an IQ test. A social psychologist demonstrated this. When
black students were tricked into taking an IQ test “under the pretext that
they are being tested to try out an electronic pen” or through other ruses,
they did much better than when they were told it was a test of their
intelligence. The intelligence that IQ tests measure, “is a meme
masquerading as a gene,” Mukherjee says, “…To call the score in such a test
‘intelligence’, especially when the score is uniquely sensitive to the
configuration of the test, is to insult the very quality it sets out to
measure.” (IQ EQ are not so reliable and as good as house alarm sending
false signals). Mukherjee argues that what you are born with are
tendencies. Then you collide with people, places, love, accidents, arts and
insults. Predetermined tendencies become a random person, one of those
unique people.

5     This tendency to focus on their deprivation while ignoring the
privileges of their Brahmin origin is observable throughout the personal
writings and interviews with the Brahmin scientists. This acceptance and
negotiation made Brahmins the ‘inheritors’ of knowledge. It is this image
which led Jagadesan, a Dalit scientist to tell me over coffee that *IISc
means Iyer Iyengar Science Campus *(Iyers and Iyengars are Brahmins from
the state of Tamil Nadu and settled in different parts of South India).

6      "Why South Indian Brahmins are intelligent?" Even though I was
educated in Tamilnadu, I was fortunate to travel and work in all major
regions of India. Nobody has asked this question to me ever before. We
brahmins were never recognized in Tamil Nādu, even though our community has
contributed tremendously for the field of Education, Arts, Health and
Community Service. We had to migrate to other states and other countries
not out of mere choice but out of compulsion. So, I asked him a counter
question, How will you increase the speed of water without altering the
supply of water? He could not answer my question, may be due to lack of
clarity in my question. I explained to him that only way to increase the
speed of delivery is by narrowing down the aperture of the pipe. When the
resistance increases and the given supply of water has to come out through
narrow aperture and therefore automatic improvement in the speed of
delivery and that is what happened to South Indian Brahmins, who migrated
outside of Tamil Nādu. So far suppressed and underutilized talents of South
Indian Brahmins are well taken care of by other states including united
states. We are all out with a vengeance to prove a point to so called
Dravidian political parties and its self-styled leaders, who have amassed
brutal wealth with the empty slogan of seeing the god in the smiles of poor
people. Hope you would agree with me.

7     If other controls (like environmental/ economic factors) are ignored
(for want of data), the intellectual performance of the Brahmin caste seems
to be *significantly higher *than what would otherwise be expected. In the
California 2012 National Merit list, there were 184 Indian winners of which

Brahmin = 112
North Indian Aryan Upper castes = 40
Dravidian Upper castes = 25
Patels ( middle ranking ) = 3
Sikhs ( middle ranking ) = 4

In the US diaspora, Sikhs and Patels despite being 40% of the diaspora, win
just 4%.

Whatever be the sphere of curiosity – literary, scientific, bureaucratic,
or whatever, the Brahmin remains the top dog. Before I give details, we
should bear in mind that Brahmins form no more than 3.5% of the population
of our country. My statistics come from a pen friend, Brother Stanny, of
St. Anne’s Church of Dhule in Maharashtra.

They hold as much as 70% of government jobs. In the senior echelons of the
civil service from the rank of deputy secretaries upward, out of 500 there
are 310 Brahmins, i.e., 63%. Of the 26 state chief secretaries, 19 are
Brahmins; of the 27 Governors and Lt. Governors 13 are Brahmins; of the 16
Supreme Court Judges, 9 are Brahmins; of the 330 judges of High Courts, 166
are Brahmins; of 140 ambassadors, 58 are Brahmins; of the total 3,300 IAS
officers, 76 [per cent?] are Brahmins. Of the 508 Lok Sabha members, 190
were Brahmins; of 244 in the Rajya Sabha, 89 are Brahmins.

This 3.5% of Brahmin community of India holds between 36% to 63% of all the
plum jobs available in the country.

9      ASSUMING the above data indicate a genuine difference in
intellectual ability between castes, we can make one of the following
deductions:

a) *Environmental*: Brahmins have a culture and home environment that
focuses on intellectual (and spiritual) pursuits – which gives them an edge.

b) *Genetic*: Brahmins have created a racist caste system which is designed
to preserve their "genes".

c) A combination of the two.

My preference is for (c). I have no doubt that the caste system *HAS
created a genetic pool that gives Brahmins (on average) an innate
intellectual advantage over other castes*. But I believe that effect is
relatively modest.

Both posts sought to draw attention to an article published in the *Scientific
American* that they claimed proved the so-called ‘Sanskrit effect’, the
belief that the millennia-old language plays a role in enhancing human
memory and thinking. Embedded in Chawla’s June tweet was a screenshot of a
post made by *The New York Times* journalist Ellen Barry, who had, the same
month, tweeted a link to the *Scientific American* article with her own
brief description of its purported conclusion.

published in the beginning of 2018 and is written by James Hartzell
<https://www.bcbl.eu/people/staff/james-hartzell/>, a researcher studying
memory who is among the authors of a study on the effects of Vedic Sanskrit
memorisation on the brain. The study had as subjects 21 Sanskrit scholars.

The write-up dives deep into how Sanskrit scholars who recite the six-hour
Yajur Veda in its entirety show higher development of the hippocampus, the
area of the brain that deals with memory and emotions. The subjects were
also reported to show an increase in size in brain regions that control
speech and voice.

The author, from his personal experience with Sanskrit and its effect on
his memory, said the team set out to test if the impact was
language-specific.

For the study

Sanskrit scholars trained for at least a decade were tested against
untrained people of similar gender and age.

But the authors say that they couldn’t really establish a connection that
was exclusive to Sanskrit. “Although this initial research … could not
directly address the Sanskrit effect question… we found something specific
about intensive verbal memory training,” Hartzell concluded in the article.{Its
not doubt but deductions are based only on Sanskrit knowing people and
nothing else; so brain expansion which is fundamentally explain by the
biology only in for FOOD WE TAKE; but the study generally, in many
researches had shown that learning process expands the brain; suppose there
are many languages already learnt by the Pundits in the experiments. Then
one may have a doubt; but it is not so; all of them have been taken for the
experiment only from Vedic classes. Hence James Hartzell was criticised
because it was a brahmin experiment; so, a theory of antagonism was
floated. Many antagonisms against the Brahmins were seen in eery quarter,
of opposing this research.}

The researchers also attempted to decode whether the increase in Gray
matter meant any reduced risk of Alzheimer’s: If it does, Hartzell wrote,
vulnerable patients could be made to perform verbal memory exercises to
prevent the onset of the debilitating disease.

The hippocampus is the brain region associated with spatial navigation and
verbal memory. The authors set out to explicitly study if this region of
the brain is affected by intense training and memorisation like the
scholars.

They recruited 42 male volunteers — 21 of whom were professionally
qualified Vedic Pandits from New Delhi who could recite the 40,000-word
Yajur Veda fully and were trained for at least seven years or over 10,000
hours.

The other 21, who formed the control group, matched the scholars in gender,
age, and number of languages spoken.

The researchers performed scans on the brains of all the volunteers. In an
attempt to avoid a sampling bias, the scholars’ backgrounds were studied to
ensure they weren’t selected from a family of traditional Sanskrit scholars.

The study states that there are definite morphological and structural
differences in the brains of regular students and the Sanskrit scholars,
with the latter showing increased quantities of grey matter, specifically
in the hippocampus.

“This was an exploratory pilot study,” Hartzell told The Print. “We would
like to conduct a follow-up study but we don’t have the funding at the
moment.

“We still have some additional data that we collected from the same
participants to analyse before we think about how to design a
language-specific study,” said Tanmay Nath, a post doctorate at Harvard
University and one of the authors of the paper.

*What the results mean*

The authors of the study note that their results are similar to those
obtained from other studies, like one conducted in 2006 on London taxi
drivers <https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17024677>. The London study
analysed the brain scans of taxi drivers, who often rely on memory to find
destinations, against those of bus drivers, who follow a set route.

The result was that the former was found to have increased grey matter in
parts of the brain that deal with memory and spatial navigation.

The near-identical effects can be attributed to the memorisation of large
volumes of data.

Even so, the jury is out on whether bigger means better. According to
experts, the improved capacity to memorise and process that kind of data
may not really indicate overall intelligence, as the use of the phrase
“brain regions associated with cognitive functions” in the *Scientific
American* article might be interpreted to be.

“These changes cannot be taken as an indicator for improvement of overall
intelligence,” said Sridharan Devarajan, professor of cognition and
computation & behaviour at the Centre for Neuroscience (CNS) at IISc,
Bengaluru. “The changes in the areas that are to do with [a] certain set of
skills simply mean that the person is more proficient in performing those
skills.”

Marc Ettinger, a former neuroscientist and researcher at the US department
of veteran affairs, agreed. “I have no doubt the same results would be
found in Muslims who memorise the Quran or even people who memorise the
dictionary for spelling, or digits of Pi,” he told The Print.(criticism)

*Establishing specificity to Sanskrit*

To evaluate effects specific to Sanskrit, the study would need to add
several other controls.

Firstly, the control group here was untrained, which meant that they did
not memorise large volumes of Sanskrit, or any text at all. They simply
spoke an equal number of languages as the test group.

“You’d have to perform the study for 10 years with another control group
that memorises large amounts of text, like the Quran or Shakespeare,”
Ettinger added.

Hartzell echoed the view.

“The specificity of the type of training and concentration on oral
precision, and extent of textual memorisation in the Vedic Sanskrit
memorisation/recitation practices is remarkable,” he said.

“To conduct a cross-sectional study with other memorisation/recitation
traditions, one would need to match these characteristics (years of
training, text lengths, accuracy of oral reproduction, age range of
practitioners, etc),” he added.

To study the effects of Sanskrit texts vs others, the researchers could
potentially look to actors in their follow-up studies, said Devarajan of
IISc.

“As a part of their jobs, actors are required to memorise large volumes of
text,” he added. “Their brains can be used to compare with the Sanskrit
scholars’.”

To determine if hippocampal changes actually improve cognitive function,
subjects would need to undergo cognitive tests, which are standard memory
tests like word lists and numerical reasoning.

“Since this was a preliminary exploratory study, we did not perform
cognitive tests,” said Hartzell.

Ettlinger added that the follow-up study should ideally also have controls
for several other factors, including the socioeconomic status of the
pandits participating in the study.

*A reason to learn Sanskrit*

Among those who responded to Chawla and Swamy’s tweets, some people
questioned the rationale behind learning Sanskrit.

However, while it is unclear whether learning the ancient language enhances
your intelligence, it is not as useless as someone might think. For
one, learning one language can be a very beneficial stepping stone to
learning others.

Studies have shown that learning a new language can change knowledge and
thought. Consider the German word ‘schadenfreude’, for example. Even before
the word came to be used in English, the sentiments it described existed.
They just didn’t have a name and thus weren’t talked about in appropriate
situations as frequently as they are today.

Another example is the colour blue. When we look around us, it is
everywhere. But the colour did not exist in all of history simply because
there was no word for the colour. Homer famously described the ocean as
being ‘wine-red’

This hypothesis, that new words give rise to new ideas and newer thinking,
is called ‘linguistic determinism’ or the Sapir–Whorf hypothesis. It is a
branch of psycholinguistics.

While the scientific community is yet to arrive at a consensus regarding

language and its influence on thought

Conclusion: While going through the Hartzell experiment, his approach and
the conditions created for the experiments cannot be criticised as done by
biased conduit pipes, spreading the ill will throughout, due to race and
language and caste-based fanatics. The expansion of the brain is
fundamentally recognised by an ancient language. Quran was tried but failed
as Arabic and Quran cannot be objects simultaneously, and the end result
