This is aposting about blade. There are many meanings, some of them colloquially toldabout blade. An interesting look in to blades Gopalakrishnan15-12-2022 1. Definition of blade The oxforddictionary gives the following meanings for blade 1) The flat cutting edge of aknife, other tools, or weapon. 2) The broad flat part of an ore, leaf or otherobject 3) A long narrow leaf of grass.. 2. Meaning of blade understood in middle school days. In my middleschool days pencil sharpener was not there. On those days either using ashaving blade or small knife pencil was sharpened. Most commonly blade was usedto sharpen the pencil. Onthose days students had no fear of sharpening using shaving blade. Most malesused shaving blade for shaving purpose fixing it in a shaving set. Rare peopleused sharpened knife for shaving. Barber used special barber knife to shave hiscustomers on those days. These typesof blades irrespective of the company came in a standard size. They continuetill today. A blade has two sharp edges at top and two at bottom. Most commonblades on those days were Panama, Prince and 7o clockand 7o clock blade was more costly. Prince blade is no more in themarket, had digits 1-4 written on sides. We thought the marking meant fourshaves with the blade using the four sides marked. Normallyfresh blades were not given to children for sharpening. After two or threeshavings blade was given. Used blades were used to cut twine, strings, papersizing etc. On those days blade was part of the items kept in the instrumentbox. 3 Blade use nowadays. The four sideblades are still used by many in shaving sets. The blade is broken in to twothrough its middle portion having holes, one broken piece is fitted in shavingequipment like knife by barber for each customer for shaving face, backside ofear etc. After use for a customer it is put in waste box. I think regular bladeis maximum used by barbers than men for shelf shaving in South India. 3. Pencil sharpener When I was in high school, sharpener startedappearing in stationery shops. Irrespective of the type for sharpening a bladeis fitted with a screw. Earlier type of sharpeners were small, blade wasclearly visible. Present day sharpeners have blade fitted inside. The unit hasa single hole to the diameter size of pencil, to insert the pencil forsharpening. Pencilsharpener is used by students for sharpening pencil for drawing work. All engineers use pencil set for drawing and sharpener is an inevitable thing for them. 4. Use of regular shaving blade in hospitals. For anysurgery the part is cleaned of hairs in the previous day. This is done eitherusing a blade or shaving set by staff. 5. Use and throw shaving set. Use and throwshaving sets with 2 or three half size blade fitted is popular nowadays.Depending on the quality of stainless steel used, one shaving set can be used either for one shave or 4-5 shaves. Theadvantage is the blade will not cut the finger even in a mishandling. There is avariation type , in which one sided blade can be fitted to the shaver unit,replacing the used one. Elders generally prefer use and throw type shaving setnowadays because no injury happens. Gillette is the most common use and throw shaving setwith blade fitted. 6. Comb which can fit a blade. Before twodecades special combs were available in fancy stores in which a regular blade can be fitted.Combing without much pressure using the combremoved excess hair from head. If one combed with more pressure, the blade cut full hair irregularly.However such combs are used rarely bymen nowadays, though still available infancy stores. 7. Electric shaver and trimmer. Specialblades are used in these instruments. Electric shaver had the limitation thatit has to be used daily. Hairs grown for a week, is difficult to remove usingelectric shaver. Further periodiccharging is required. Trimmer isadjustable to either make a loose cut or close cut. Nowadays trimming beard iscommon with youngsters. Barbers widely use trimmer. 8. Mixer and blades. The differenttypes of blades fitted in cups are rotated fast by an electric motor in a mixer for powdering, cutting, grindingetc. Since the blades lose their sharpness over time the blades are replacedperiodically. 9. Coconut grater. The coconutgrater either used in a single machineor as an attachment in wet grinders have saw tooth blades. Manual grater are also having saw tooth blades. To avoidinjury after use the blade portion iscovered tightly with a cover. 10 Scrappers used in kitchen Scrapers usedin the kitchen to peel the skin of cucumber, carrot, beetroot, raw banana etc.have one sharp blade. When moved with slight pressure, the skin get peeled off.
