CULTURAL QA 12-2022-19 BEING ACOMPILATION THERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 Do airline employees get free flightsand upgrades when they travel? If so, how often does this happen and what isthe system for getting these perks? A1 Shaunak Bhattacharjeee, SoftwareEngineer | Traveller | Foodie4h It depends on which airline you are working with. My dadworks at Air India and they have the privilege of getting free flights that arelimited to his immediate family members, which includes my mother, my brother andme. He gets a total of 16 complimentary tickets, out of which a maximum of 8 can beused for international travel. Otherwise, all 16 can be used for domestictravel and each covers a round-way trip. Which basically means 32 flights. However, the flights are not totally free of cost. One needs to paythe taxes. For the domestic sector, the cost comes to around 1,600–2,000 rupeesfor a round-way trip, which is, of course, still a lot cheaper than the actualprice. It comes with a clause as well and that is,these tickets are subject to availability. Onlyif there are vacant seats do we get to fly. So if a flight'sdeparture time is at 5 PM, the counter closes at 4 PM and it is only afterthat, that we get to know if we can fly or not. Many a time it has happenedthat we had to come back from the airport when the flight was overbooked.Hence, not all is rosy with these complimentary tickets. I think that coversall that there is to know about this system. I usually purchase my own ticket when I fly because there'salways a cloud of doubt about whether or not I'll be able to fly with thecomplimentary ticket. Usually, when it's a family trip for leisurepurposes, we avail of the free tickets. There is anothervery small perk attached to this. The complimentary tickets that I mentioned are for economy class ticketsonly and cannot be upgraded directly, even with additional money. However, at times, it might happen there are empty seats in business class buteconomy class is fully booked. At the boarding counter, we are offered jump seats, but upon thecaptain's request, once the flight is airborne, occupants of jump seats areoften upgraded to business class. I have had the luxury oftravelling in business class thrice so far, all through upgrades. Q2 Kosher salt is supposedly blessed butis there any chemical difference between it and regular table salt? A2 Claire Jordan, Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaper Fri Different types of salt have different textures, which makea difference to how they behave in cooking. Sea salt, the coarsest grade, is the best one to use on pie crusts because it makes themsparkly and crunchy. Kosher salt is medium-coarse,and should really be called koshering salt, because it’s used to wick traces ofblood out of meat to make sure it’s kosher. A4 Nicholas Stone, Extensive life longinterest in public transport.23h I have had the pleasure of travelling on a train acrossthe Arctic Circle. The Arctic Circleis 66°33′49.3 north of the equator. During the Northern Hemisphere’s wintersolstice, this is the southernmost limit of darkness. South of the circleduring this dark day, you will see the sun rise. North of the circle, you willnot. The railway linefrom Boden (in Sweden) to Narvik (in Norway) crosses the Arctic Circle. As a passenger onthis train, I eagerly anticipated crossing the circle, which is marked by white stoneson either side of the track. This is an outstandingly beautifulrailway line with forests, lakes and impressive landscapes. I made the journeyin June 2005 and was treated to continuous daylight for the several days of mytrip. WellLife Goes on! As theClock ticks bye, another, Day/Week/ month/ Year. So thats how Aging TakesPlace! My note-I have added the question for the mindset of awidower in a foreign country. Husband and wifequarrel, but on death of the other theyfeel the loss. Even to pass timehe thinks even to get a girl friend if possible without inviting trouble. – A substitute. Q7 If you are/were diabetic, what sweetfoods would you miss the most? A7 Claire Jordan, Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaper Dec 12 I *am* diabetic, but I’m on a drug called semaglutide whichkeeps my average blood sugar pretty much normal. One of the strange results isthat I now eat far more sweet stuff than I ever did before.I’ve never had much of a sweet tooth - even as a small child I liked stiltonand celery, not sweets. Butthanks to the semaglutide, my average blood sugar is now below 7 but, beingdiabetic, it’s still a bit unstable, so I have to keep sweets and cakes aroundto bring my blood sugar back up if it drops too low. Q8 Do all medical doctors learn how to dosurgery in case the need arises, even if their specialty doesn’t require it? A8 Pedia Doc, Updated Dec 8 What a question!!! Our medicalprofession is ruled by MCI ( now called as NMC)in India and so our actions as a medico is limited by therules and regulations set by it. Except for someemergencies like tracheostomy, assisting vaginal delivery,d oing a needlethoracostomy for tension pneumothorax, or performing heimlichs manoeuvre Idon't think even other surgical medicos not in the specific surgical branch isallowed to do any procedure. For instance if apregnant woman comes to me in a peripheral setup and she needs an emergencycaserean section. So what is my role as a pediatrician? In case there is noOBGYN doctor near me, maximum I can do is prescribe her some life saving drug, gain some intravenous access for medications if needed and refer her tonearest medical facility with obstetrics care. By no means can I do caserean in her even if I haveassisted the same during my internship days. That is why medicalschools have a compulsory internship training so that we learn the basics ofall branches and provide the care as and when needed. But doing surgery is a fine art. For thisresidents undergo years of rigorous training and then become qualified to dothe surgery. Then they passexams ,get certified to perform surgery. These are the basic minimumneeded to perform surgery in respective fields. Respective fields means thatsurgical branches too have subdivision like general surgery, OBGYN,CTVS,Neurosurgery etc. So as a surgeon even a neurosurgeon can’t go ahead and do agastric surgery proclaiming him/her self a surgeon. In short surgery is no joke and that’s why such strictrules have been laid in respect to it.Even qualified surgeons end up with complications/case fatalities whichthey didn't expect or anticipate!!!!No wonder NMC rules are very strictwhen it comes to doing surgeries. Q9 If we are the product of millions ofyears of evolution, why do we still have primitive instincts like fear andaggression? A9 Claire Jordan, Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaper Dec 11 Because it’s only one or two thousand years since most ofus here in Europe stopped worrying (much) about being eaten by predators, andin rural areas of the world where there are wild leopards, tigers or polarbears (or very large crocodiles) people still *do*have to worrying about possibly becoming something’s lunch. That’s without evenconsidering the risk from human marauders, or from animals like Cape buffalo orvenomous snakes who aren’t trying to eat us, but still might kill us if we comeon them unexpectedly. My note- Fear is anatural instinct with animals and humans Q10 Can we eat cucumber at night? A10 Anton Taiki, Experiences in Malaysia,Southeast Asia, East Asia.21h Why ever not? Eating cucumber at night is beneficial for health, asit contains many properties such as vitamins, water and dietary fiber that helpthe body function. However it might be advisable not to eat too much of it justbefore bedtime as it may make you feel “bloated” thus may interrupt your sleep. Eat moderate amountof cucumber together with other food, in a salad or a sandwich. Super idea All the above QA are from Quora website on 18-11- 2022. Quora answers need not be 100% correct answers .
