Q2           If humans disappeared from Earth, where will elephants, lions,
hyenas, cheetahs, zebras, and osteiches live innot just Africa?

A2           Matt Riggsby, MA Archaeology, BostonUniversity Mon

Pablo Escobar, thenotorious Colombian drug lord, was wealthy and powerful
enough to indulgehimself in any number of extravagances. Among them was an
extensive private zoo with animals fromall over the world.

When he died in 1993, his country estate was abandonedand a number of animals
in his zoo escaped. Ofparticular interest here are the four hippos in his
menagerie. They reached a nearby river and didnot just survive but actually
thrived, to the point where there’s now over ahundred hippos, approaching 200
by some estimates, living in the wildsof northern Colombia. This is actually a
significant problem, since they’retechnically an invasive species with
potentially negative impacts on theenvironment.

So this is more orless what we might expect to happen. There are small captive
populations of animals held in zoosaround the world. Ifhumans die and they get
out, they’ve got a shot at survival if the localenvironment is friendly to
them.

African animals like elephants and zebras in zoos inSouth American and southern
Asia such might stand a good chance of survival.Indeed, southern Asia was
already home to native species of elephant, lion, andsome others, sopopulations
in happily situated zoos might form the seed of a newlytransplanted wild
population.

Q3           Does an air conditioner (AC) helpreduce bad odours in a room?

A3           Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

No is the answer. We have to open windows and doors fully to remove
badodour. Also clean the room and remove the source of bad odour in the room.
Switch ON fans will help toremove bad odour more quickly. There are room
sprays. Spray them andswitch ON air conditioner. Bad odour will disappear.
Ensure there are no sourceof bad odour anywhere in a home.

Q4           Which country have you visited thatturned out to be nothing like
how it is depicted?

A4           Michelle Soroh, Sat

I recently visitedIndia and it was nothing like how it is depicted in the
movies.

I expected tosee a lot of poverty, but instead found a vibrant culture with
bustling citiesand modern infrastructure.

The peoplewere incredibly friendly and welcoming, which was quite different
from what Ihad seen in films about the country.

It's amazing howmuch can be missed when you only get one perspective on
something!

Q5           Do flight attendants secretly eatFirst class delicacies?

A5           Kevin Barrett, Former FlightAttendant (1987–2007)3y

Yes…..and notsecretly. When I was flying International, the Airlines wanted our
28 First Classpassengers (747) to have their first choice of meal. So there
were 28 of eachmeal. 3 or 4 different choices. The left over meals were crew
meals for flight attendants and pilots. There were always extra meals in case of
problems….we could alwaysuse good food to make angry, upset, or mistreated
passengers feel better. Thereis/was always LOTs of food on the airplane when I
was flying….. who knows, itmay be different now. Theymake jokes about airplane
food, but sometimes the food was very very good! The one thing you could NEVER
do was take food off the plane.

Ground workerswould often raid the galley when passengers and crew got off the
plane. Thatswhy when I worked galley position (my favorite spot)…. I would
always put left overs inone area so it didnt go to waste. I think its sinful to
wastefood!!!!

A7           Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

The general answer is bucket because the mouth is widerthan the pot.

It also depends onthe weight of bucket / pot. If the weight of bucket is more
comparing pot, potwill be floating.

Q8           Do rabbits really like carrots?

A8           Ellie Bounce, The girl who LOVESanimals and has interest in money
Dec 7

Actually,this is a myth.

Rabbits don't naturallyeat root vegetables or fruit. Carrots and fruit are high
in sugar and shouldonly be fed in small amounts as occasional treats. Rabbits
need mainly hay and/or grass, some leafygreens and a small, measured amount of
pellets.

Q10         Which event seems invented but is real?

A10         Sebastian Legarraga, Small businessowner, composer, writer Sun

The Great Stink ofLondon in 1858 is one event that seems too strange to be
real, but it actuallyhappened.

The Thames River had become a cesspool of industrial andhuman waste, leading to
an unbearable stench that hung over the city for weekson end.

People were forcedto cover their faces with handkerchiefs or masks just to go
outside, and manyfled the city altogether.

In response, Parliament passed legislation requiringsewers to be built
throughout London and other measures taken to clean up theriver — all of which
eventually succeeded in eliminating the smell.

electric multiple unittrain operated by Indian Railways. It was designed and
manufactured by the Integral CoachFactory, CHENNAI.

Q12         How does a plane avoid crashing intotall buildings when flying low
in city areas?

A12         Edward Falk, Commercial pilot'slicense, 1200+ hours flight
experience Sat

It’s been known to happen. Famously, a B25 lost in theclouds crashed into the
Empire State Building many years ago(back before modern instrument flying
technologies existed).

For the mostpart, airplanes are not allowed to fly low in city areas.
Regulations requirethat the plane be 1000′ higher than the top of the highest
nearby structureplus enough altitude to glide to a safe landing in case of
engine failure.

The obviousexception to that rule is during takeoff and landing. The old Kai
Tak airportin Hong Kong was notorious, and there are many pictures and videos
of jumbojets flying between buildings on the way in.

In general, you don’t fly down low over buildings unlessthe visibility is good
and you can see them. If visibilityis bad, you either don’t land at that
airport, or you fly a prescribedinstrument approach that will avoid them.

Q13         Do Indian people get enough sleep?

A13         Anubhav Jain, A simple human |Entrepreneur | Author 4y

Babies wake up atnight.    Kids have exams, home works todo in night.

Teenagers haveentrances, video games, porn, movies, You Tube, Netflix etc.

Young adults haveprojects, assignments, dead lines, warnings, chatting with
girlfriend/boyfriendto deal with at night.

Newly marriedpeople have uhmm uhmm some important issues to deal with.

Kids are born, theyare night owls, they are your responsibility, they shit,
cry, play and pee innight.

Home loan, car, AC, washing machine & fridge EMI's,kid's school fee, tuitions,
job security, life & health Insurance don't letthem sleep.

Hypertension, depression, mid life crisis, career ofchildren, deteriorating
health of parents, retirement planning makes them wakeup all night.

Depleting health(specially body ache), rising expenses, low savings, low
motivation, don't letthem sleep!

Finally dead people are burnt or buried beneath theground so can't get peaceful
sleep either!

Good sleep givesyou energy, freshness, rejuvenation, stable health, it is the
bestanti-depressant, it also prevents lifestyle diseases and is a major source
ofmotivation and happiness.

Being an Indian you can get good sleep only if you areadamant about it! Your
choice steal it or leave it!

Q14         What is the healthiest food we can eat?

A14         Aisha Azeem, Sat

DATES

Dates are such afood, if you do not eat food for the whole day and live only
with dates andwater, then this is the complete diet:

It gives youstrength by avoiding weakness, and provides you all the nutrients,
it is not healthierbut healthiest, this is my personal experience.

I never feelweakness, if you eat dates in the morning on an empty stomach, 7 or
as manydates as you can eat, it gives you a lot of strength, and this is my
favoritefood ever.

Q15         Is eating raw spinach good for you?

A15         Kinley Tshering, thimphu, Bhutan Dec 14

As we all know, spinach is one of the vegetables with the highest oxalate
content, and itsoxalic acid content is as high as 0.97%.When oxalic acid enters
the body, itcombines with calcium. Not only hinders calcium absorption, but
also formscalcium oxalate.

The solubility of calcium oxalate is very low, which caneasily cause kidney
stones and urinary tract stones.

Therefore, although spinach can be eaten raw, it is best to eat cooked spinach.

Many nutritionistsbelieve that steaming and boiling is an effective cooking
method that canreduce the oxalic acid in spinach by 80% to 90%.

Q16         Why are there crushed stones alongsiderail tracks?

A16         David S. Rose,Proprietor of B&ARRCaboose C-54Updated 23h

This is a goodquestion with an interesting answer. The crushed stones are what
is known as ballast.Their purpose is to holdthe wooden cross ties in place,
which in turn hold the rails in place.

Think about theengineering challenge faced by running miles of narrow ribbons
of steel trackon top of the ground: they are subject to heat expansion and
contraction, ground movement and vibration, precipitation buildup from rough
weather, andweed and plant growth from underneath. Now keep in mind that while
99% of the time they are justsitting there unburdened, the remaining 1% they
are subject to moving loads asheavy as 1,000,000 pounds (the weight of a Union
Pacific Big Boy locomotive andits tender).

Put all thistogether, and you have yourself a really, really interesting
problem that was first solved nearly200 years ago, and hasn't been
significantly improved since!

The answer is tostart with the bare ground, and then build up a foundation to
raise the trackhigh enough so it won't get flooded. On top of the foundation,
you deposit a load of crushed stone (theballast). On top of the stone, you lay
down (perpendicular to thedirection of the track) aline of wooden beams on 19.5
inch centers, 8 1/2 feet long, 9 incheswide and 7 inches thick, weighing about
200 pounds...3,249 of them per mile. You then continue to dumpcrushed stone all
around the beams. The sharp edges of the stonemake it difficult for them to
slide over each other (in the way that smooth, round pebbles would), thus
effectively locking them in place.

The beams are made of hardwood (usually oak orhickory), and impregnated with
creosote for weather protection. In the US wecall them "cross ties" (or,
colloquially, just "railroadties"); in the UKthey are known as "sleepers";
European Portuguese,"travessas"; Brazilian Portuguese, "dormentes";
Russian,шпала (read "shpala"); French "traverses"; Estonian,“liiprid”. While
93% of ties in the US are still made of wood, heavily trafficked modern rail
lines are increasingly trying alternatives, including composite plastic, steel
and concrete.

Sidebar for thetruly geeky, with fun facts about railroad ties

There are approximately 689,974,000 ties in the UnitedStates, supporting
212,000 miles of railroad track. In 2011 the major US railroads replaced a total
of 15,063,539 ties. 14,148,012of them were new and made of wood; 544,652 were
second-hand wood ties; and370,875 were new ties made of something other than
wood. Old ties are recycled for use inlandscaping, turned into pellet fuel, or
burned in co-generation plants toprovide electricity.

Next, you bring in hot-rolled steel rails, historically 39'long in the US
(because they were carried to the sitein 40' gondola cars), but increasingly
now 78', and lay them on top of the ties, end to end. They used to be joined by
bolting on an extra piece of steel(called a "fishplate") across the side of the
joint, but today areusually continuously welded end-to-end.

It would seem that you could just nail them or bolt themdown to the ties, but
that won't work. Thenon-trivial movement caused by heat expansion and
contraction along the lengthof the rail would cause it to break or buckle if
any of it were fixed in place. So instead, the rails areattached to the sleepers
by clips or anchors, which hold them down but allowthem to move longitudinally
as they expand or contract.

So there youhave it: a centuries old process that is extremely effective at
facilitatingthe movement of people and material over thousands of
miles...eventhough nothing is permanently attached to the ground with a fixed
connection!

The ballastdistributes the load of the ties (which in turn bear the load of the
train onthe track, held byclips)across the foundation, allows for ground
movement, thermal expansion and weightvariance, allow rain and snow to drain
through the track, and inhibit thegrowth of weeds and vegetation that would
quickly take over the track.

By the way, asnoted in the comment by User-13812768563281058315, the
consequences of NOT appropriately providingfor the effects of heat expansion
and contraction can be pretty drastic.Just imagine what would happen to a train
that tried to go down this particularsection of buckled track (in Melbourne,
during a heat wave...).
