CULTURAL QA12-2022-28A BEING ACOMPILATION THERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 What happens if I forgot to select myseat when booking an air travel? A1 Bart Crunk, Former Analyst (retired)(1991–2021)May 3 They wantyou to select a seat because they want to charge on top of what you alreadypaid. Granted, there’s achance that if you don’t choose a seat, you may not be seated next to whomeveryou are traveling with, assuming you are doing so. My wife and I oftentravel, and while we like to sit together, unless it’s a flight over 4 hours orso, we don’t really care. Ireally dislike paying extra. That said, we had boarding passes thatsaid “see agent” when we flew last month. We were assigned “extra room” seats on an exit row.Had I selected them, it would have been roughly $75 pp additional. I’m flying the endof this month. Every seat under “select seat” has an additional charge, sowe’ll just show up and see what we get. It’s only a 3 hour flight so if we sittogether, great. If we don’t, it’s no big deal. My note- If seat selection is made depend on seat a sumvarying from 100-300 is charged In India. If no seat isselected, if aircraft is not full, mostly front seats are given by counter staff. While going to Bangalore once I forgotto mark seat numbers for me and wife and we were given front rows 18 and 19. But the problem I experienced was the flight was always in a slanting positionwhile flying and we could feel it. Q2 Do trains have to slow down if thereare cars on the tracks in front of them, and if so, why? A2 “Do trains have to slow down if thereare cars on the tracks in front of them, and if so, why?” Let us deal withmainline railroads or heavy rail commuter lines. Light rail may have shorterstopping distances (but you shouldn’t bet your life on it.) Even if there isextended line of sight, a train operator has to work on the assumption thattraffic crossing the tracks will be stopped by the crossing signals in advanceof the train’s arrival at speed, otherwise the train’s progress will be reducedto a crawl. Once the operator realizes that for whatever reason thevehicle will not clear tracks in time, it is usually too late for an emergency braketo have any significant effect on the speed, and you wind up with a scene likethis.: (a babyelephant lifted up by the front lifting and throwing Guard) Q3 What fruits are good for diabetics? Q4 The Thiruvananthapuram InternationalAirport was closed for 5 hours to facilitate the passing of the SriPadmanabhaswamy procession. What is your opinion about it? A4 Aravind Varier, Teacher (2011–present)Nov 2 Sri Padmanabhaswamyprocession is carried out for many centuries and it is perfectly correctto close the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport for 5 hours to facilitatethe procession to go through the Runway. Some might ask whySri Padmanabhaswamy procession is being allowed to carry out on theThiruvananthapuram International Airport runway. Answer is simple The Traditionalroute followed by the Sri Padmanabhaswamy procession coincides with the runwayof the Airport. Point to Remember ✍🏻 Airport was built in the year 1932. However, the Sri Padmanabhaswamy procession is carried out through that routefor hundreds of years and we cannot change the traditional route of the SriPadmanabhaswamy procession just because we build an Airport there. TheThiruvananthapuram Airport suspends service for few hours twice a year for 1) PainkuniFestival in the month of March -April 2) Arattu Festivalin the month of October — November My note-While gifting the land for airport construction, the above musthave been a condition agreed to. Q5 What is wrong with the Indian societyof today? A5 Krishna, An avid reader Updated 2y I was in a shoppingmart. I took some 7–8 items and put them in my bucket. I walked towards thebilling counter and joined the line. I waited for around 8–10 minutes and thenmy number was just after 1 person. I saw an old man came who might be in his late 60s. He brokethe line and stood before me. I said Uncle, please stand behind me there is a queue and you can’t break it. He got enragedand said “Are you anilliterate? Don’t you know how to talk to elders?” I said “I am notwrong. I said what was ethical. We should not break the line. There is no suchthing as illiterate in it. These are just moral values.” He said “First youare not even educated and now you even talk rudely to elders. Did your parents not teach youmorals?“ In between this, agirl came in the conversation and asked the old man “What happened?” The oldman said that I am disrespecting him and today’s generation don’t know how torespect elders. Now the girl cameto me and said “Don’t you have any shame, He is of your father’s age and youare disrespecting him.” Now another guyspoke who might be in his 40s. He said “Now-a-days boys just keep roamingaround. They don’t respect girls and elders.” I said “It’s not my fault, hebroke the line and I just asked him to join the line from behind and then hehimself start saying that I am an illiterate or my parents have not taught meanything. I did not say anything disrespecting to him.” The guy said“What’s the problem if his billing is done first? He is old andyou are young. You can wait.” I said “He is notthat much old. If he would have been in his 70s then I would not have asked himto join the line ethically.” Now the old unclesaid “I think you don’t even respect your father then how you can respect me.” I said “Okay, let’send it. I am sorry. You get your billing done first.” The guy said “Learnto respect elders.” I said “Okay.” He could have askedme politely to get billed first but, In India age and gender is directlyproportional to the amount of respect. My note- The supermarket must have provided aseparate counter for elders or board- elders are given priority. Recently I had an instance in a bank. Two countersare there, one for senior citizen, but not manned to deal with cash. There was a person before meto deposit above one lakh with small denomination currency. I was behindwith 10 T for remitting. Simply thecounterman came to senior citizen counter and took my money. A tactful leading. Q6 What are some mind-blowing facts aboutfood? A7 Srinath Nalluri, M.Sc, B. Eng inMechanical Engineering & Minor (Technopreneurship), National University ofSingapore (Graduated 2020)1y Dignity of labour During my under graduation,I worked part-time in a restaurant where most of my batch-mates used to comefor dinner. My jobinvolved billing, serving food and clearing the plates after dinner. It didn’t feel anything ‘low-class’ and no one looked down on me or treated mebadly. Later, even when I had enough money from internships, Ijoined an yoghurt shop for fun during vacation. And weused to serve flavored yogurt with nuts, clean the dispenser machines, wipetables and mop the floor. All of us were students and it used to be fun. I doubt if doing the same thing wouldresult in same reaction.Handsomepay. I was paid $25 fortwo hours at the restaurant, that was around 1200 INR then. Later, I startedtaking tuition, for which I was paid 1800 INR per 1.5 hours. In India, due toexcessive supply, the price is often low as well as there is exploitation towork for longer hours. Necessity Expenses in a foreign country are way too higher comparedto expenses in India. Hence, a part-time job might not be required in the firstplace. The expenses inIndia can be covered through tight spending, financial planning and frugallifestyle. Q8 What is the cheapest meal in yourcountry? A10 Deepa Shankar, Manager, Mannar &Company London 2y South Indiansare very risk averse by nature. The North Indian, not so much. Theaverage South Indian chooses employment and an assured monthly salary overentrepreneurial ventures. The North Indian is more enamoured by the idea of'business'. During weddings, the South spends on gold and asset building. The north spends on depreciating assets like cars and onlavish partying. To each, his own. A Punjabi once told me she wasspending 30k on her clothes for her niece/nephew's wedding. And this was tenyears back. Eh?!? I was about to faint ;) All the above QA are from Quora website on 27-12- 2022. Quora answers need not be 100% correct answers . Compiled and posted by R.
