Chapter 2. Verse 47

Bhagavad Gita

कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन |

मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भूर्मा ते सङ्गोऽस्त्वकर्मणि ||

karmaṇy-evādhikāras te mā phaleṣhu kadāchana

mā karma-phala-hetur bhūr mā te saṅgo ’stvakarmaṇi

Translation – Thy concern is with action done, never with the results. Let
not thy fruits of action be thy motive; neither let there be in thee any
attachment of inaction.

A man is subject to rebirth (punaravrtti) if he performs tasks with greed.
Nishkama karma yoga does not advocate renunciation; it mentions
renunciation in action. One should not give up action at any cost. Bhagavad
Gita asks one not to have any motive of future benefit while performing the
action, or bother about good or bad consequences of action.

It is not possible for any action to be motiveless. For example, we eat to
satisfy our hunger. We drink to quench our thirst.

There is a famous saying in Sanskrit:

प्रयोजनम् अनुदिस्य न मण्डोपि प्रचोदयात् – Even a stupid person does not do
anything unless there is a motive.

Walking through life without a motive or desire is impossible for the
individual, but it is possible for one to direct the motive from a lower
goal towards a higher goal. The motive of one’s action shouldn’t be
temporary satisfaction of sensual desire, but rather the highest motive of
self-realisation. Nishkama karma commands that a man should give up
attachment to the motive, in order to be able to remain untroubled by
success or failure of action.

Chapter 2. Verse 48

Bhagavad Gita

योगस्थ: कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय |

सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्यो: समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते ||

yoga-sthaḥ kuru karmāṇi saṅgaṁ tyaktvā dhanañjaya

siddhy-asiddhyoḥ samo bhūtvā samatvaṁ yoga uchyate

Translation – Steadfast in devotion do thy works, O Dhanamjaya, casting off
attachment, being the same in success and failure. Such equanimity is
called Yog.

The only thing that can be controlled by us is the effort we put into our
daily actions; we cannot control the results. When we realise this, we
concern ourselves only with doing our duty and not with the end results as
they are ultimately out of our control. The results are for God to enjoy
and so, we dedicate them to him. If the results don’t live up to our
expectations, we must understand and accept that it was due to God’s will.

This way, we are able to accept our success and failure, pleasure and pain,
as God’s will. We can get through the hardships in life if we can grasp the
meaning of this verse and work towards its practical application to our
human lives.

Chapter 5 Verse 11

Bhagavad Gita

कायेन मनसा बुद्ध्या केवलैरिन्द्रियैरपि |

योगिन: कर्म कुर्वन्ति सङ्गं त्यक्त्वात्मशुद्धये ||

kāyena manasā buddhyā kevalair indriyair api

yoginaḥ karma kurvanti saṅgaṁ tyaktvātma-śhuddhaye

Translation – With the body, with the mind, with the intellect, even merely
with the senses, the Yogis perform action toward self-purification, having
abandoned attachment. He who is disciplined in Yoga, having abandoned the
fruit of action, attains steady peace.

According to the teachings of Bhagavad Gita, a Karma Yogi is someone who is
good to the world around them, someone who loves the world and all its
Beings selflessly. A Karma Yogi is also aware of the fact that the body,
mind, intellect and senses are all the properties of the Lord, given by
Lord himself. Therefore, all the work done is for the benefit of the Lord,
and not for the satisfaction of the human ego.

According to Bhagavad Gita, humans are not the real owners of their body,
mind, intellect and senses. All of those belong to the Lord. But due to our
psychological conditioning, we believe that our bodies belong to ourselves.
Due to this misunderstanding, we begin to do things for our own benefit, to
appease ourselves without the thought of appeasing God or practising good
Karma.

For example:- The tongue likes spicy and greasy food, so we undertake
actions to satisfy our taste buds by eating food that may prove to be
harmful in the long run. The sense of independent thought and ownership
takes place, becomes familiar and strengthens our ego which directly
opposes the power of Karma.

Why is Nishkama Karma necessary?

One can compare Nishkama Karma to the Western Philosopher Immanuel Kant’s
Theory of Categorical Imperative, which states that the worth of an action
depends on good will or the effort of one’s duty, rather than its
consequences. Nishkama karma does not refer to inaction but rather action
with an intention of submission to God.

Nishkama karma is quintessential at this time of Kali Yuga (meaning the age
of darkness) when so many people are self-centred and greedy and commit
crimes to gain something by hurting others. If more people performed
Nishkama Karma to please the Lord, they wouldn’t think of performing evil
deeds to fulfil materialistic desires and the world could be a better
place. Hence, one must try to perform desireless actions, but this is not a
simple task. Only someone with high intellect and moral values could
succeed in achieving this, like the Yogi.

Following the Karma Yoga path would lead someone to liberation (moksha)
eventually, which means they’ll be free from the cycle of birth and death.
Hence, they will be free from all the worldly sufferings. The highest and
supreme status, which is beyond good and evil, is that of liberation. KR
