CULTURAL QA 01-2023-20 BEING ACOMPILATION THERE MAY BE ERRORS
Q1 What improvements would you like tosee in Indian Railways? A1 Shaunak Bhattacharjeee, Lives inKolkata, West Bengal, India (1996–present)Jan 11 A few weeks back, afriend of mine was travelling in Jalianwala Bagh Express on a 3 AC Coach. However, in thenight time, the passengers on the coach noticed that unreserved passengersstarted to enter the coach as well, requesting them to adjust. Things turned from bad to worseas the train crossed Sasaram station as the coaches were flockedwith people turning it into a local train. It was late atnight. Having paid extra to travel in AC 3-tier, you would expect some kind ofprivacy and comfort. But the passengers were askedto adjust so that passengers without a ticket or a general ticket could travelwith them. This is something that needs to be stopped. I wonder what the RPF was doing! The basic security is at risk here. My friend put up apost on Facebook sharing his experience and while many people laughed seeingthe condition, I think it is a thing to worry about. Leavealone the seats, even the walking passage is blocked by those men who arechewing tobacco, listening to loud music and playing games on their mobilephones. A lady wouldn't dare to walk to the washroom in this crowd. I don't entirelyblame the crowd for travelling like this. The population in some of thesestates is increasing at an uncontrolled rate and the lack of awareness aboutbasic things is making this even worse. The Indian railways should stepup and see an end to this practice of travelling in the wrong compartment. Only if you have avalid ticket, should you be allowed to enter, otherwise not! If this was thecondition in AC 3-Tier, I wonder what the scene was in Sleeper Class! My note- In southern states it is less. However in day trains it is a common seen, passengers entering the non AC reservationchair cars, crowdingnear toilet and entrance/ exit keeping huge luggage in Chennai- Bangalore route. Q2 Can cells talk with other cells? A2 Ken Saladin, Former professor ofhistology (microscopic anatomy)Jan 9 Yes, they absolutely must!Ifcells didn’t talk to reach other to coordinate their activities, the resultwould be physiological chaos and the death (or failure of embryonicdevelopment) of the whole person. Cells talk by nervous, hormonal, and paracrine means. Q3 What do British prisoners eat? A3 Adam Bowyer, Previously locked up for4 year prison sentence in the UK. Tue I spent 4 years in British prisons. I hope this littledescription for my past experience of having tosample the culinary delights of UK prisons you may find interesting…. I didn't think the food in UK prisons wasoverly horrible but it's not that great either. Regarding portion size, think of stuff you would get on a kids menu in cheap restaurant and that'sbasically it. Theaverage daily budget set by the government to feed each prisoner in a UK prisonis approximately £2 per day. I got given a menu tick boxcard at the start of each week to choose for meals for the week ahead.Choice was limited but was still a choice nonetheless. Breakfast is normally a mini pack of cereal, piece offruit, white or brown bread. (You would normally collectyour breakfast pack for the following morning before lock up the night before. You can then eat breakfast before you are unlocked in the morning). You can also collect tea, coffee, and sugar sachets and a small carton of milk to make hot drinks usingthe kettle in your cell. Lunch is generallyjust some type of sandwich or baguette. Evening / dinner tends to be something with rice orpasta. Things like curry, chicken breast, lasagne, spaghetti, noodles, soup, chips, potato's, pizza slices. Sometimes fish& chips but I was always wary of having the fish, it never looked cookedproperly to me. There is normally a basic desert of some sort but Ihonestly cannot remember really what it used to be but it would of beensomething basic like cup cake, sponge, custard, apple pie or something likethat. Usually orange, apple juice, milk and water were available. All stuff that isquick, easy and cheap to make basically. Always was a vegetarian option too.Portion sizes are small and it's not uncommon to go to bed still feeling quitehungry. In most UK prisons, you collect your food tray and take itback to your cell and eat in your cell. I always eatwhilst in my cell. I was issued my own re-usable blue plastic tray, blueplastic plate, plastic cutlery and plastic mug. Also its worth remembering that you can buy some of yourown food items from the prison canteen (think it's calledcommissary in US prisons). I used to buy some of my own food items as prisonfood is fairly rubbish. I always used tostock up on pot noodles / cup noodles. Powdered soup packets, a few bags of sweets and goodies.I used to like to do a bit of comfort eating when i was banged up in my cell, helped relieve boredom. Ialso used to make sure I had some tins of tuna and some chocolate, also some vape products (even though i don't smoke) as these are used ascurrency in a lot of UK prisons. My note- Allsorts of comforts in food, bed, only thing confined to a cell. We cannot comparewith Indian prisons. Still Briton is not rich now. Q4 What are some bitter truths ofsoftware engineers in India? A4 Malavika, Former Senior SoftwareEngineer at Ingram Micro (company) (2016–2021)Wed Every software engineer doesn’t start his journey with 1lakh per month, it can be as low as 5 to 6k per month. 1 crore CTC looksamazing but reality hits when you get the message of salary being credited. Toexplain this further yourcost to company can be 1 crore but it in hand salary can be merely 40 lakhs aswell. There is no fixedworking hours. You need to keep learning almost everyday andhave to keep yourself updated with new technologies, learning doesn’t end atcollege, it actually starts after college. It’s difficult to be an individual contributor all yourlife and get a good renumeration, if you want to increase your salary you needto be a team player and gradually grow into technical architect or projectmanager (grow on the ladder) You don’t needsoftware engineering degree to be a software engineer. On-site opportunityis luck and not by choice or merit. So you cannot say every brain going out ofIndia is excellent 😜 If you are placed via campus, it’s not sure that youwill get the role/technology you desire. Software engineers don’t always develop code from scratchsome have to work on production support. Q5 What is thenews item about VandeBharat express? A5 RupalPal,Tue This is a hot topicthese days as timings of Vande Bharat trains is clashing with fewshatabdi trains running on their route. Recently, thissenario was noticed on Mysore-Chennairoute where the timings of both the trains were clashing and raised a questionin everyone’s mind. For now, Railwayshas fixed the clash by reschedulingthe Shatabdi Express timings but the question remains same. Is railways goingto replace all Shatabdi trains? Or Railways will operate both Shatabdi &Vande Bharat trains simultaneously? I will try to answer both the questions together &share what Railway Minister said on this topic. According tothe railway minister, we are going to operate both the trains for now and thereis no plans to eliminate shatabdi trains. My opinion is that they will slowlydiscontinue or replace Shatabdi rakes in next few years on some routes wheredemand for Vande Bharat trains will pick up. I remember theinitial days when T-18 was called a replacement of Shatabdi trains whereas T-20was called a replacement of Rajdhani trains. My note- Recently Ihad been from Bangalore to Chennai by noon Vandebharat express. For the huge ticket price, speed was not that much, food served was just one samosa, mysore pakand coffee. Coffee powder, sugar, milk powder were packed in a singlepack and hot water was given in a small paper cup to mix up. Nothing more. I was hungry on reaching Chennai. Quality ofthe items were slightly better than Satabdi express. Leg space was more, seats were new, nothing more. Q6 Were there any slaveowners thattreated their slaves morally and considerately? A6 ER Mikulincer,Historian6y Morally, no. Considerately, yes. Throughout history, many slave owners may havetreated their slaves humanely, with compassion and kindness and care. Theyprovided for their needs, gave them food, shelter, clothing, did not overwork them and evengave them luxuries like a small amount of leisure time. In fact, it was intheir interest to treat their property well. Slaves were expensive, and they worked best when healthy. You don’t abuse your car or laptop, right? Why hurt your own property? It still didn’t make slavery moral. It still meant that at any point, the considerate behavior could stop and the slaves could be subjected to horrific treatment. Your life, your body, your family were in the hands of another, and nothing could save you. Slavery dehumanizedpeople into property. There’s no moral way to do that. And slavery exists today.World Cup Slaves: It Gets Worseand Slavery Today " Free the Slaves Q7 How can we install air conditionerson outer walls safely without damaging the wall from inside or outside? A7 Gangadhar Bhadra,Online Shop atOnline E-Commerce (2020–present)Tue To install an air conditioneron an outer wall safely, you can follow these steps: Make sure the air conditioner is the proper size forthe space it will be cooling. A unit that is too large will cool the room tooquickly and shut off before it has a chance to remove enough moisture from theair, while a unit that is too small will run constantly and never cool the roomproperly. Select a location for the unit that is shaded fromdirect sunlight, as this will help keep the unit from overheating. Check the building codes in your area to ensurethat the installation of the air conditioner complies with all localregulations. Make sure the wallwhere the unit will be installed is strong enough to support the weight of theunit. If necessary, reinforce the wall with additional framing or a structuralsupport. Use a level to ensure that the unit is level andplumb when installed. Use a foam sealant to seal the edges of the unitwhere it comes into contact with the wall, to prevent drafts and leaks. Use a weather proof cover to protect the unit fromrain and snow during the winter months. Use aprofessional for installation, air conditioners areheavy and have electrical and refrigerant connections that need to be doneproperly to avoid accidents or damage to the wall. By following thesesteps, you can install an air conditioner on an outer wall safely withoutdamaging the wall from inside or outside. My note- The drawback with split unit AC is, somehow birds get in and lay eggs. Cats get in the small inner space and deliverkids. Netting the outdoor unit may reduce such drawbacks. Recently in one of myAC units in spite of good net, squirrel got in and laid eggs. With net airquality also diminishes. Q8 How often should you service a waterpurifier? A8 Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now I am from Chennai, India. In most areas it is hard waterin bore-well. It is best to service quarterly thewater purifier and replace parts requiring replacement. In fact once in twomonths is still better. Once the service person takes out thepaper filter, one can observe how much dirt has accumulated. Servicecharges are low, but part costs are more. But by servicing weget well purified water. Also ensure the over head water tankis cleaned at-least once a quarter. I have observed the TDS value reducing ingood measure once the tanks are cleaned. Q9 Why don't we have buffalo milk in theUnited States? A9 Peter, I love to eat and am anadventurous eater. Jan 5 First, we should becareful about terms. “Buffalomilk” is usually (almost always) milk from what Americans call water buffalo. What Americans call “buffalo” is usually called “bison”in the rest of the world. (It is very confusing! The two animals aren’t even thatclosely related). >From what I cantell, bison milk is virtuallynon-existent. Bison are very hard >to milk and don’t seem to give much milk, even if you can milk them. Second, waterbuffalo are not native to the Americas. They are native to Africa and Asia.Bison, OTOH, are native to North America. That’s probably a big reason whytheir milk never caught on here. Still, it is available. Q10 How could sheep have survived bythemselves without mankind to tend them? If evolution is true, shouldn’t theyhave died out ages ago because they are defenseless creatures? A10 Claire Jordan, Degree in biology andfolklore; programmer, shop owner, secretary on newspaper Wed Wild sheep shed their wool naturally, and they havehorns. Most domestic sheep haveto be clipped annually, and have either been bred without horns or had theirhorn buds removed. And even domestic sheep are not defenceless. Wherethe English side of my family come from, Faversham in Kent, during the 1980sthey had a flock of sheep in the churchyard to keep the grass short, and theram broke someone’s arm. Here’sa Soay ram named Hersir, one of the oldest and most natural breeds, very close to their wild ancestors. They shed naturally and are very athletic. As you can see therams have impressive headgear All the above QA are from Quora website on 21-01- 2023. Quora answers need not be 100% correct answers .
