Q1           Can a blood clot travel from one armto another?

A1           Ken Saladin, Professor of biology,emeritus (retired)10h

No—nothing can travel from one arm to the other withoutgoing through the heart
and lungs first, and any blood clot would lodge in thelungs.

One of theimportant functions of the lungs, in fact, is to filter out and
dissolve smallblood clots to prevent them from traveling any farther.Large
enough blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolisms), however, are
lifethreatening.

Q2           What would happen if someone givesbirth while flying? Which
citizenship does he get?

A2           Mats Andersson, Lived in 4 differentcountries Tue

Pregnant women are not allowed aboard commercialaircraft during the last
trimester. It’s not a medical situation they want tohave to deal with.

But let’s sayit’s a private aircraft. Almost all countries assign citizenship
based on theparents’ citizenship, so it’s not an issue.

But let’s say it’sin the Americas, where it’s common to assign citizenship
based on birthplace.Well, any halfway sane pilot would land as soon as it was
obvious there wasgoing to be a birth onboard.

But let’s sayDalton Air hired James H. M. "Howling Mad" Murdock as pilot. In
thatcase, most countries in the Americas have signed the Convention on
theReduction of Statelessness, where an aircraft is treated like a ship, and
citizenship follows from thecountry where the aircraft is registered.

But there’s always one country that doesn’t follow anyinternational standards,
right?

If the plane isregistered in the USA, but is not in US airspace at the moment
of birth, andnone of the parents is a US citizen but they are both residents of
the US whilebeing citizens of another country that goes by birthplace, then
there might bea problem. Depending on the exact laws of that other country.

And I’m not lookingup citizenship laws all over South America for a Quora
answer. I’ll just say that it’s going to be very rare that it’s a problem.

Q3           What are the main causes of a heartattack in the winter?

A3           Dr.Ganeshakrishnan Iyer, MBBS, MS,MCh. Lead Consultant - CTVS
Surgery Wed

A heart attack, also known as a myocardial infarction, is caused by a blocked
blood flow to theheart muscle. There are several factors that can contribute to
an increasedrisk of a heart attack during the winter, including:

Cold weather: Cold temperatures can increaseblood pressure and constrict blood
vessels, making it harder for blood to flowand potentially leading to a heart
attack.

Winter storms: Heavy snow and ice storms can leadto physical exertion and
stress, both of which can increase the risk of a heartattack.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD): The lack ofsunlight during the winter months
can lead to feelings of depression andanxiety, which can raise stress levels
and increase the risk of a heart attack.

Increasedalcohol consumption: People tend to drink more alcohol during the
holidays andwinter months, which can increase blood pressure and the risk of
heart disease.

It's important totake steps to reduce your risk of a heart attack, such as
maintaining a healthy diet, getting regular physical activity, managingstress,
and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

Q4           Is it harmful to wear wet clothesinstead of using an air
conditioner (AC) on hot days?

A4           Gangadhar Bhadra,Younameit E-Commercereseller at Online E-Commerce
(2020–present)19h

No, wearing wet clothes is not harmful. It can provide a cooling effect as the
evaporation of the water from theclothes helps to regulate the body
temperature. However, relying solely on thismethod may not be as effective as
using an air conditioner, especially inextremely hot weather. Additionally,
continuously staying in wet clothes can cause skinirritation and increase the
risk of fungal or bacterial infections. So, it's important to strike abalance
between using natural cooling methods and using ACs to stay comfortableand safe
in hot weather.

Wearing wet clothes is a natural way of staying cool inhot weather, as the
evaporation of the water helps to reduce the body temperature. This method can
be beneficial for individuals who do not have access to airconditioning or
prefer not to use it. However, it isimportant to note that wearing wet clothes
continuously can lead to discomfortand skin irritation. Furthermore, if the
clothes are not driedthoroughly, there may be an increased risk of fungal or
bacterial infections.

Additionally, relying solely on wearing wet clothes may not be effective in
extremely hotweather, especially if the humidity levels are high. In such
cases, using anair conditioner or taking advantage of other cooling methods
such as fans orshade can provide more relief and comfort.

In conclusion, wearing wet clothes is not harmful in itself, but it should be
done inmoderation and combined with other cooling methods as needed. It is also
important to maintain good hygiene to prevent any skin irritation orinfections.

My note-Among Hindus, especially among Brahmins many semi auspicious, in
auspicious orauspicious functions are carried out wearing wet clothes. Butfor
limited time.

Q5           What are the benefits of hiring anelectrician to install a new
electrical outlet, rather than doing it yourself?

A5           David Thomas, Professional Engineer,Civil, Alaska Wed

1) They’ll almost certainly do it correctly and to code.

2) They’re also more likely to follow best practicesthat are over and above
code in lots of little ways (use the side terminals, not the back-stab
connections; leave 9 inches of conductor in the box, not thecode-required
minimum of 6 inches and Z-fold it before pressing the receptaclein).

3) They’re unlikely to be “penny-wise and dollar-foolish”as some DIYers are.
Don’t get the 79 cent duplex receptacle when the $2 one ismuch sturdier.

4) They’ve got the weird flexible drill bits, fish tapesand other tools for
snaking new conductors through existing walls. You’d haveto buy or rent them,
and wouldn’t be as skilled in their use.

5) Unless you built your own house, theirguess/assessment about where the studs
are, which way the joists run, whattypes of framing corners were used, etc.
will be more accurate.

6) They’ll likely finish it in one trip (using parts intheir truck) versus the
homeowner who has to run backto the home center for a junction box extension,
drill bit extension, orgrounding screw.

7) They will (or at least should) pull a permit andhave the work inspected.
That eliminates the risk of a future home inspections(e.g. when selling the
house) finding un-permitted, un-inspected work and of aninsurance company
denying a claim if unpermitted work causes a fire orelectrical injury.

8) Homeowners tend to futz around and ponderhow to best do each task. The
contractor on the clock uses their experience tomake a quick, reasonable
decision and then make it happen. Typical husband,“Honey, if I said I’ll do it,
I’ll do it - you don’t have to keep reminding meevery 6 months!”

OTOH,electricians are in high demand and well paid. It will probably run
$200-$300and possibly more depending on the distance. The materialsalone (30
feet of 12/2 NM-B and a few j-boxes and receptacles) might be $40(plus sweat
equity by the DIYer).

My note- I  constructedmy  home in native giving importance to the wishes of my
father, with suitable foundation for 2nd floor and provision for extensionby my
own planning ( withoutany loan) . But I failed to for see raising the
foundation to road level(due to limitation of money). So parking a car and
taking out became difficult .Sincelocal laterate was used, it had to be
replaced to construct first floor. So inthe extension area, I used bricks
enabling first floor construction. If really a civil engineer wasconsulted he
would have for seen how parking could be done and advised notusing local
laterate since for first floor it will not support. Result- double work.

Q6           What is the slowest growing fruit?

A6           Sean Kernan,2y

Well, one is certainly the pineapple.

We go to thegrocery store and assume that they all just pop out several times a
year, but a pineapple takes two full years just to get to their floweringstage.

And then ittakes another six months for the fruit to actually mature and be
edible.

Pollination in thewild is often carried out by hummingbirds, who are huge fans
of the fruit. Butthe problem is, when the fruit gets pollinated, it rapidly
diminishes thequality of the fruit with the arrival of seeds, which takes away
from thefamous, tasty texture.

In areas where thefruit was originally grown, hummingbirds were prohibited.
Specifically, inHawaii.

Sadly, a pineapple plant only grows one pineapple andthen dies. So don’t let it
go to waste.

Also fun fact, theydon’t grow in trees. They grow in shrub:

Q7           Do computers need fans and airconditioners when they are in sleep
mode?

A7           Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004) Just now

Sleep mode is introduced in computers appearing nowadays. In sleep mode, after
the person returning after sleep ( other urgent work), the computer is
IMMEDIATELY SWITCHED ON. Sothe computer was silently keeping your work intact.
It was working. Only thing delay of starting acomputer is avoided. Sofan/AC may
be switched ON to avoid heating.

Added note- Oneshould not forget the Laptop was kept in sleep mode and not shut
down from theappearance.

Q8           How do people survive the cold inSiberia?

A8           Mila Lana, Lives in Bratsk, Siberia,Russia3y

The rules of survival are simple:

1. Dress according to the weather. If it's warmoutside, dressing is easy. If it
is cold outside - dress warmly, in 3 layers ofclothing (cotton clothing + wool
clothing + warm outerwear)

2. Move a lot on the street. It’s not your clothes thatwarm you, but the heat
that muscles produce when you move.

3. Do not drink alcohol and sedatives, whichreduce the sensitivity of the skin
and constrict blood vessels. Drinking alcohol, you must beinside a warm room,
you can not go outside. You will not be able toadequately perceive the
temperature and evaluate your condition. This is deadlydangerous.

4. Going on a long journey by transport, make surethat the car is in good
technical condition. Let your family and friends knowyour route and time for
follow-up phone calls. Check the battery level in thephone. Take food and hot
drink, an ax, matches with you. If your car breaksdown on the road, you can
light a fire and bask near it, waiting for help. Yourrelatives will report you
to the rescue service when you do not get in touch. You will be found and saved.
In general, in Russia in severe frosts on theroads rescue vehicles are on duty.
They drive through the main roads every 3hours and help everyone who is in
trouble and who has a broken car.

5. If you are tired in the cold, you should still move. You must not sit and
sleep. If you fall asleep, you will die.

6. In winter, use tires with spikes on your car. Thisimproves grip.

Q9           Why are Indian parents so adamant ongetting their children married
off? Why isn't the sons/daughters opinionrespected when they don't want to get
married?

A9           Bhuvana Rameshwar, Happily married (arranged marriage) Wed

Since you specifiedIndian parents.. Yes, why do we get our adult children
married?

May be to see you all settle down with a loving spouse. To have children and
enjoy the joys of parenthood. These are emotions to befelt individually.
Parents cannot tell these as stories or write novels forchildren to read and
get happy. You have to feel them first hand.

An adult person with a spouse to share life is like aship on a calm sea. Until
then you are like a ship in an unknown sea with lots,of money, time and raging
hormones. You can easily lose the right path in life.

Marriage teaches you responsibilities besidescalming you down from the raging
bull that you were from teenage to early 20s.

You learn to love, share, care, save money, trust, respect ,adjust, give - in,
sacrifice for love, and co - habitation. This is soimportant for a happy and
peaceful life on earth . After all happiness andpeace are important for success
in any field including this one in a zillionchance on earth called as life.

Soon we parents will be dead and gone from this earth. We want to die peacefully
thinking “thank God, I left behind my son /daughterwith a good person for the
remaining years of their life “. My child is notfollowing a wayward life or
living like a 5 - sense animal.

He /she is leading a good life with a good spouse.Even a good life partner
would do provided it is long term of many years notbreaking up every season and
jumping beds in search of the next soul mate .

Of course propagation of our family genes, continuity of our family culture does
have importance too. There is a sense ofpride and satisfaction in seeing grand
children and great grandchildren. Notmany are blessed with these.

Now those who do not want to get married whatever thegenuine reason please talk
to your parents, completeopen, calm talk. Tell them the reasons. They are bound
to accept but delayingmarriage on purpose out of fear of responsibility,
jumping beds, changing bf/gfoften, quitting jobs for no reason, irresponsible
behaviours, wasting yoursalary & money, time, going in for immoral activities
as singles is notacceptable.

Q10         Why is potato called as 'bangala dumpa'in a Telugu dialect
connecting it to the state of West Bengal, a non-Teluguregion?

A10         Krishnama Ramadurai, Lives inSecunderabad, Telangana, India
(1966–present)Updated 1y

A)..Potatoes are known in the Telugu country bythree names, Bangala dumpa, Alu
gadda and Urala gadda..Each name has its ownvalues.

B)..Bangala dumpa:బంగాళాదుంప.

1..This name for potato is first used in the Telugudialect of the northern
Andhra Pradesh generally known as ‘Uttarandhra’ /‘Kalingandhra’.

2..From there the name ‘Bangala dumpa’ spread tointerior Telugu region
‘KostDumpalu-బంగాళా‘Uttarandhra’ is apart of ‘Kosthandra’ in a larger sense.

3..The potato crop was introduced in ‘Uttarandhra’(Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and
Visakhapatnam districts) from the border stateOdisha (formerly Orissa)..Odisha
area was a part of the Greater Bengal provinceand became a separate linguistic
state in India only in the year 1936.(1stApril)

4)..Potato crop entered Uttarandhra much earlierthan the creation of Odisha
state..Because the crop got introduced from theGreater Bengal province it was
known as ‘Bangala dumpa-బంగాళాదుంప’..

5)..Bengal is Bangala-బంగాళా in Telugu..Dumpa -దుంప means
‘root(vegetable)/tuber in the language.

C).. Alu gadda:ఆలుగడ్డ.

1)..This expression for potato is from Telanganadialect of Telugu..Telangana
region was under the rule of Urdu speaking Nizamdynasty for about three
centuries..Urdu was the official and administrativelanguage having a great
influence on the people..

2)..Potato is called in Urdu as ‘aloo-आलू’. So, thisword ‘aloo’ entered in the
local Telugu dialect as ‘aalu-ఆలు’ and suffixed witha Telugu word ‘gadda-గడ్డ’
which means‘root/tuber’, the name ‘alugadda’ became the word for potato in
TelanganaTelugu dialect. .

D)..Urala gadda: ఉరలగడ్డ .

1)..This expression for potato is from Rayala seemadialect of Telugu..There are
also other colloquial variants of this name likeullagadda-ఉల్లగడ్డ,
urlagadda-ఉర్లగడ్డand vuralagadda-వురలగడ్డ.

2)..It is a Tamil influenced word..In Tamil potato iscalled ‘uruLai k
kizhangu-உருளைக்கிழங்கு’..’uruLai’ meansanything that rolls or turns, as a
ball..The word ‘urulai’ became ‘urala’ inTelugu..Telugu ‘gadda’ that means
‘root/tuber’ is suffixed to ‘urala’ to become‘urala gadda’.

Edit on 10/11/2021: It is in response to comments opposinguse of ‘Tamil
influence’ in the name of ‘urala gadda’.There is a Telugu word ‘urulu’, that is
true. If potato used this Telugu wordoriginally in ‘urala gadda’, the name
could have had a Pan-Telugu name likeother vegetables like ‘vankaya’,
‘Bendakaya’, ‘Chikkudukaya’ &‘Kandhagadda’ etc.,

When potato appeared in vast Telugu land mass, invarious parts, in those
ancient times, out of urgent necessity, people did callthis root vegetable with
readily available expressions unmindful of theirorigins which were later
standardised as practised.

Thus the northcoastal Telugus depended on potato’s rout of arrival that was
Bengal province,Rayalaseema Telugus depended on Tamil name for potato since
they were immediateneighbour to Tamil areas in the United Madras province and
lastly TelanganaTelugus depended on Urdu name for potato-Alu-as they were under
Urdu speakingMuslim Nizam rule.

This is my strong opinion and I do not expect anyone tosubscribe to my views.
If I had a parochial mind, Iwould not have suggested ‘Bangala Dumpa’ in a
comment as a Pan-Telugu name forpotato instead of ‘urala gadda’ which has Tamil
influence.

Hope all is clearabout Telugu names for potato, this root vegetable.
