Dear friends,

This is aposting about coins in circulation now in India. Some reference has
made to oldcoins and related matters also. Hope an interesting reading.

1. Coin collection box.

Even in 2006there were public PCOs. From these PCOs, public could talk dropping
coins. Thecoins were collected in a box. When the collected amount is remitted
to Postoffice, it was a common practice to replace the coins with currency and
coinsgiven to those in the Telecom office collecting currency equivalent to the
valueof coins.

Later PCO phonesoften found provided in provision stores etc.  A small PCO
machine.  The shop man may supply the required coinalso, if the person was not
having the coin. Shop man was given 20% commission.

After thewidespread use of mobile phones, PCOs have almost disappeared.

Recently Ihave found a FREE PCO Phone in Chennai international airport. This
enablesthose who come by international flights to contact their local people.

Howevertelecom companies like Airtel provide a mobile SIM, which the passengers
frominternational flights get activated automatically on reaching airport.
Duringtheir vacation they can freely use the SIM till they board flight. A
smallmonthly charge is collected. I got one for my son under family plan from
Airtelabout one year back.

 2. Coins from Hundi

Most regularvisit devotees offer coins only in Hundi of the temple. Normally
temple authoritiestake out coins either periodically or when Hundi is full.
From there also manyused to get coins giving equivalent value of currency.

As Iunderstand the coins are deposited to military office after collection is
from PazhavangadiGanapthi temple in Trivandrum. Mostly the coins are collected
by military menopening hundi in late afternoon. The temple is still owned by
military.

3. Small and medium restaurants and coins.

There aresuppliers of coins to the restaurants, they collect coins from
different sourcesand daily give to them.  In place theyget currency plus
tiffin/meals as they require or a discount.

Now most payby credit cards/ debit cards the bill even in medium restaurants.

4. Supply of coins at railway stations

At one timecertain banks used to keep their staff in the entrance of railway
stations togive coins to the equivalent value of currency either for using in
PCO oremergent use.  Only small amount of coinswere given. Now the system is
not there.

5 Buses and ticket fare in rupees/+coins

Most buseshave display to give coins for the fare if fare is small by the
passengers. Some give exact fare. However by evening most conductors desire fare
by currencyand balance if any they give by coins. By evening their hand bag may
be fullwith weight of coins and 90% give to passengers who require coins and
collectcurrency in turn for the value of coin given in Tamilnadu. In fact at
one time busconductors were given a small amount of coins before they commence
duty at onetime in Tamilnadu. Now the practice is not there.

6. Remitting to account by coins in the bank

There is anupper limit of coins which can be used to remit in bank accounts.
Presently itis known to me as Rs. 500-00. By any type of coins, up to 500-00
rupees, thecashier may collect coins.

7. Coin supply from banks.

Banks maygive coins if part of a withdrawal amount has to be paid by coins e.g.
-withdrawal Rs. 508-00. Most banks give 8-00 rupees by coins.

But one canwith draw from account by new currency or new coins if available
with bank. If one requires ten rupee coins,he has to withdraw Rupees One
thousand. One pouch containing 100 onerupee coins is given. I have not seen any
bank giving coins after opening pouchesfor small amounts. Now many banks will
give coins of rupees twenty value andrupees ten value in pouches as withdrawals
to customers.

For currencyalso the same holds good. If one customer requires 100 rupees as
new currency,he has to withdraw ten thousand rupees. If one customer requires
200 rupees asnew currency, he has to withdraw twenty thousand rupees.

However thesame is not followed for Rupees 500 currency and when a cashier
hasstarted using new currency for payments. However banks are specific to give
newcoins/currency only to customers.

8. Currency and coins in circulation

In India forthe following denominations currency as well as coin is available.
Rs 10-00, Rs20-00, Rs 5-00, Rs 1-00. For rupee one the currency is printed by
Government ofIndia.

>From KuberaLakshmi temple near Vandalur, Chennai, the special archana prasadam
>contain Rs5-00 currency. It is provided for the green color of Kubera.
>Currency may besoiled, but still people preserve it in cash box.

One rupeecurrency is valued Rs 350-00 from coin collectors. It is very rare to
see onerupee currency. Two rupee currency available at one time is withdrawn
fromcirculation and not valid now. I understand from banks printing of Rs
10-00currency is stopped. Instead coins are distributed through banks.

9. Inertia to carry coins

Somehow thereis inertia with people to carry more coins because of weight.
Somehow a fewpercentage carry coins to a value of Rs 10-00 or 20-00 at all
times.

10. Keeping good coins

There is atendency with most to keep special coins or glittering coins with
persons. Theywill spend only ordinary coins.

11. Offering coin to Lord Ganesh

Irrespectiveof religions, most start journeys after making an offering to their
Gods.Hindus normally keep a coin as offering to Lord Ganesh, before starting
ajourney- even daily.

12 Phala Dana thamboolam.

During functionsphala Dana thamboolam is given by coins among Brahmins.
Somehow, new coins ofspecific amount will be made out for this.

13. Navarathri and one rupee currency.

Aninteresting incident. Two years back my wife was given a one rupee
currencyalong with other items from a home. She wondered why it is one
rupeecurrency.  I said it is very rare to getit.  Knowing it, the currency
becamedearer to her. Finally she agreed to give me for Rs 100-00 in place. I
paid100-00 rupee and took from her.
