Mahaveer got his name for his exceptional control over his senses. *Seeking
truth and spiritual freedom, he attained enlightenment (Nirvana) at the age
of 72*. Mahavir believed in a preached ahimsa or non-violence, satya
(truth), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacharya (chastity) and aparigraha
(non-attachment). As Buddhism took a branch of Veda, DESIERE , and Jain
Mahaveer , took a Branch AHIMSA.. It was on the 13th day in the month of
Chaitra or the 13th day of the waxing moon in the Chaitra month of Hindu
calendar, that Mahavir was born in Kundalagrama in Bihar. He was born as
the son of King Siddhartha and Queen Trishala. His birth date, however, is
sometimes debatable among the Swetambar Jains, according to whom he was
born in 599 BC, while the Digambar Jains believe he took birth in 615 BC. When
he was 30 years old, Mahavir renounced his crown, abandoning all his
worldly possessions in search of a spiritual path. He spent 12 years in
exile as an ascetic, away from all worldly pleasures and meditated and led
an austere life for around 12 years before attaining ‘Kevala Jnana’ or
omniscience hence, was also called Sage Vardhamana and preached
non-violence (ahimsa). Thus all roads lead to Rome only the Roaming towards
the understanding of WHO AM I?
Ahiṃsā (अहिंसा).—Non-injury. There are opinions both in favour of and
against Ahiṃsā in the purāṇas. Śukrācārya extols the importance of Ahiṃsā
to the asuras (demons) thus:
"bho! devaripavaḥ satyaṃ bravīmi bhavatāṃ hitam ahiṃsā paramo dharmo
hantavyā hyātatāyinaḥ dvijairbhogaratairvede darśitaṃ hiṃsanam paśoḥ
jihvāsvādaparaiḥ kāma—mahiṃsaiva parā matā."
"Oh, foes of the devas, I shall tell you the truth which is good for you.
Non-injury to any living being is the most righteous thing. Do not molest
even those who come to kill you. Even that act would be 'hiṃsā' (injury). It
was those brahmins who were attached to worldly pleasures and addicted to
overeating that enjoined in the Vedas that hiṃsā is permissible for yāgas."
(Devī Bhāgavata, Skanda 4). Mārkaṇḍeya Muni (sage) says thus: "Why should I
mind the innumerable killings going on unnoticed in this world full of
life. People of old speak very sacredly about Ahiṃsā. But O best of
brahmins, who can live in this world without injury to another life?"
(Mahābhārata, Araṇya Parva, Ślokas 32 & 33, Chapter 208). Great stress is
laid upon the virtues of ahimsā
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/ahimsa#hinduism>, sūnrta, asteya and
brahmacaryya, but the root of all these is ahimsā. The virtues of sūnrta,
asteya and brahmacaryya are made to follow directly as secondary
corrol-laries of ahimsā. Ahimsā may thus be generalized as the fundamental
ethical virtue of Jainism; judgment on all actions may be passed in
accordance with the standard of ahimsā ; sūnrta, asteya and brahmacaryya
are regarded as virtues as their transgression leads to himsā (injury to
beings). Ahimsā according to a householder, according to anubrata, would
require abstinence from killing any animals, but according to mahāvrata
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/mahavrata#hinduism> it would entail
all the rigour and carefulness to prevent oneself from being the cause of
any kind of injury to any living being in any way.
Again one should think that the practice of the ten dharmas
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/dharma#hinduism> (virtues) of self
control (*samyama <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/samyama#hinduism>*),
truthfulness *(sūnrta),* purity *(śauca
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/shauca#hinduism>),* chastity *(brahma
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/brahma#hinduism>),* absolute want of
greed *(akiñcanatā),* asceticism (*tapas*), forbearance, patience *(kṣānti
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/kshanti#hinduism>),* mildness
*(mārdava),* sincerity (*rjutā*), and freedom or emancipation from all
sins *(mukti
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/mukti#hinduism>)* can alone help us
in the achievement of the highest goal. These are the only supports to
which we can look. It is these which uphold the world-order. This is called
dharmasvākhyātatābhāvanā. Again one should think of the Jaina cosmology and
also of the nature of the influence of karma in producing all the diverse
conditions of men. These two are called *lokabhāvanā* and *bodhibhāvanā.*
So one can check how our own bad fingers created different
religions because of freedom misused by Brahmins. Buddha and the Mahaveera
were contemporaries while Adi Shankara who was also a contemporary was
junior to them but stabilised the veda system, course -correcting the
routes; hence only Jainism stayed put and Buddhism went to
different directions. But Adi Shakara did not do anything wrong to those
religions at all. Keep your home intact; your street; your group; your
nation; and all will set in perfect; but fear in the name of decency,
hypocritically, hides the true sense. KR IRS 3423
