with the Priusbeing one of the most popular hybrid vehicles on the market.

Q3         What do restaurants inyour area do if a customer eats and is unable
to pay?

A3         Naveen Subramanian, Livedin Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India Updated 1y

There’s a trade secret - If theowner (or) well experienced long-term staff is
the cashier, he will let go ofthe customer who’s unable to pay.

The reason is simple - asuccessful busy restaurant loses 5–10% of total revenue
per day due to “humanerror”. Though the billing is computerized (or
digital)cash handling is still done by humans and humans makes mistakes.

As a scenario, let's consider a middle-class restaurant with heavyfootfalls on
a busy weekend day. The total transaction would be in lakhs that’shandled by a
single person in cash counter (unless it's a fast-food chain likeKFC which has
multiple cash counters)

The billing software willgenerate the bill based on human inputs. If I enter 6
dosa, it will generate a bill for 6 dosa. If I make amistake and enter 5 dosa
instead of 6, it will generate a bill only for 5 dosa. This mistake is
unintentional as a cashier or the waiter will be very busy, tired, exhausted,
and is prone to make mistakes.

Next is the “giving change”part - If the total bill is Rs1736 and the customer
gives a Rs 2000 currency note, the billing system willsay “balance change to be
given is Rs 264”. However, the system doesn’tunderstand that there is no Rs 4
coin. Sometimes the restaurant itself will runout of coins. So the cashier will
round of the “giving change” to Rs 260 andenter Rs 4 as miscellaneous (there’s
a separate column called miscellaneous inthe billing system to handle such
issues)

The billing system is fixedand doesn’t vary based oncustomers. For example -
the additional 150 gms gravy is Rs 35. But sometimesit’s unfair to charge for
extra gravy when it's a regular customer or the totalbilling is huge. In such
cases, customers would feel annoyed to pay extra forextra gravy. So the cashier
will give it for free and enter it under “discount’or “miscellaneous”

Sometimes local traffic copswill ask for bribes (crowd inthe restaurant creates
excess traffic on-road) so the cashier will simply takesome from the counter
and write it off as miscellaneous.

Apart from all these, thereare other reasons like missing tobill for kids and
counting only adults in a buffet, etc

So overall, the thumb rule is- there will be revenue loss and a gap between
total bill generated and total revenue generated. Successful restaurants tryto
keep it as minimum as possible between 5% on a normal day and 10% on a verybusy
day.

A person unable to pay a billis not at all a loss compared to food waste that
happens in the kitchen at theend of the sale. Also, theprofit margin per meal
is somewhere between 30% (for sweets) to 100 % (forgravy) - (Trade Secret 2 -
this is why gravy is costly than the main dish)

Comparing all these scenarios, the owner or an experienced long-termcashier
will simply let go of that person because spending time to handle that issue is
simply a waste oftime …. time is money, and it's precious.

Who would want to sit and fight for Rs 260 bill while transacting inlakhs?

The business itself is a cycle - you lose somewhere to someone and gainit
somewhere from someone. You just have to keep losses under control

A successful entrepreneur understands this equation.

My note- But nowadays billingis very accurate. The section incharge notes the
items in his hand-  heldtab, not the waiter. Even a single item is left out.

Q5         Will uncontacted tribeslike the ones who live in Sentinel Island
evolve differently from nowadayshumans and turn into different species?

A5         Claire Jordan, Degree inbiology and folklore; programmer, shop
owner, secretary on newspaper Apr 6

If they remain isolated for a couple of hundred thousand years, yes, almost
certainly. Since they’re a smallpopulation, and therefore subject to genetic
drift, they might even do it in afew tens of thousands of years. But rising sea
levels make it unlikelythey’ll be able to remain isolated for that long: sooner
or latersomebody is going to have to contact them (they’re more accepting of
groupswhich include women), explain the problem and persuade them to move to a
tallerisland, otherwise they’re going to end up with too little land above the
wavesto be able to support themselves.

Q6         How long can the fastestcheetah go 80 mph for?

A6         Nick Nicholas, StudiedBig Cats for 40+ years Mon

80mph is a bit too fast for acheetah. The maximum speed fora cheetah is perhaps
73 mph. Still  whois counting? It is the fastest mammal on Earth. It has a
hugeheart and lungs and is wonderfully streamlined with a long tail which is
usedfor steerage. The acceleration is a mind blowing 0–50 in 2 seconds from
awalking start.

However, it cannot keep it up for long. It is disputed but the generalconsensus
is that a cheetah can only keep up full speed for 600 to 800 yards.

Q7         What is the strangestnatural substance you have ever encountered?

A7         Shamas Khanewal, FormerScience Teacher3y

A couple of years ago, Inoticed small transparent bubbles in a whitish foam on
a bush in our frontgarden. There were several leaves with this foam on them.I
asked the neighbour. Yes the neighbour had come across them over the years
inhis garden. The commonname for them was frog’s spit, or spittle.

Although I have a background in biology, I didn’t have a clue what itmight be
although I was certain it was of biological origin. I did someresearch and this
is what I learned.

It is caused by an insect called a spittlebug or froghopper, in the Cecropidae
family (also in the newly createdfamilies Aphrophoridae and Clastopteridae),
and goes by the name of frog spit, cuckoo spit or snake spit.

If you closely examine the contents of the frog’s spit, inside you’llcome
across this critter, the spittlebug nymph.

The young form of the insect, called a nymph, pierces the stem of its host plant
and uses the sap that flowsfrom it to make the bubbles in question, inflating
them with air from a specialopening on its underside.

Not only does this spittleconceal the nymph from predators, it insulates it
from sudden temperaturechanges and prevents it from drying out. Moreover, the
foam has an acrid taste, enough to keep even the moststubborn predators at bay.

There are over 850 species of spittlebugs throughout the world. It wasnice to
know my garden had a supply of such bugs.

My note- I have heard such spitis good for the plant. In myhome I am seeing the
spit on jasmine plant and black Tulsi plant nowadays. I don’tdisturb it.

Q8         What are the mostinteresting things that have happened on an
airplane?

A8         Vinay Patel, frequentflyer Updated 9y

This happens numerous timesevery morning in Everest Mountain Flights that take
off from Kathmandu, Nepal.

After take-off, within no time i was flying over the highest mountainpeaks in
the world (Gauri Shankar, Melungtse, Nuptse), busy recording a movie to
preserve my overwhelmingexperience.

The air-hostess walked up to me and said - "Sir, your turn".

Seeing me clueless, she clarified - "Sir, your turn for a viewfrom the cockpit."

I had not expected this. Wow!

I rushed and stood between the two pilots and one of them kept showing methe
major peaks we could see from there. A few seconds later, he points out a black
pyramid far out on thehorizon and says - "That's Everest !".

"Awesome...", is a word that's mostly abused, and shouldrightly be preserved
for such an occasion, and that was when i silentlywhispered it to myself.

Q9         What is the smallestbridge between two countries?

A9         Luise, Worked at OwnBusiness Mon

It is located in the ThousandIslands region of the Saint Lawrence River, which
flows along the borderbetween Canada and New York State.

The archipelago consists of 1,800 islands on the river and they aredivided
between the two countries. Canada 2/3, USA 1/3.

Among these many islands in the river is the island of Zavikon. There  is a
small house with a rocky beach, a fewtrees and that's it.

What do you do if you need morespace? You grab one of the tiny islands nearby.

That's exactly what the owners of Zavikon Island have done. They built a tiny
bridge fromtheir property to a neighboring island and turned it into their new
garden.

But the neighboring island isactually one of the American islands.

This means that this 10-meter bridge is the smallest international bridgein the
world.

However, nobody knows if this is true, because there are also people whoclaim
that both islands are Canadian.

Anyway. In any case, this bridgewith the flags is adorable.

Q10       What is the differencebetween a router and a modem?

A10       Business Consultant |Digital Marketing Services | IT Guru Mar 31

A router and a modem are twodifferent devices that are commonly used to connect
to the internet. While they are both important components of anetwork, they
perform different functions.

Modem:

A modem is a device that connects your computer or other devices to
theinternet. It stands for "modulator-demodulator."In simple terms, a
modemtakes the data from your computer and converts it into a signal that can
betransmitted over telephone lines or cable lines. The signal is then sent to
theinternet service provider (ISP), which then connects you to the internet.

There are different types of modems available, such as cable modems, DSLmodems,
and dial-up modems. Cablemodems are used to connect to the internet through a
cable TV line, while DSLmodems are used to connect to the internet through a
telephone line.

Dial-up modems are used to connect to the internet through a telephoneline as
well, but they are much slower than cable or DSL modems.

My note- Dial-up modem isobsolete in Indian Telecom now. Once dial up modem is
used the telephone also becomes engaged.

Router:

A router is a device that isused to connect different devices on a network. It
takes the signal from the modem and distributes it todifferent devices in your
home or office. A router can be wired or wireless. A wiredrouter is connected
to your computer through an Ethernet cable, while awireless router uses Wi-Fi
to connect to your computer.

A router allows you to connect multiple devices to the internet at thesame
time, such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, and gaming consoles. It also
provides security features, such asfirewalls and encryption, to protect your
network from hackers and malware.

My note- Present day modems with router is available. Modems connect CCTValso.
TV is also connected through router to watch items from Disney hot star,
amazonprime etc.

Differences between a modemand a router:

1. Function: A modem is usedto connect your computer tothe internet, while a
router is used to connect multiple devices on a network.

2. Connection: A modem isconnected to the internetservice provider through a
telephone or cable line, while a router is connectedto the modem to distribute
the internet signal to different devices.

3. Speed: A modem determinesthe speed of your internetconnection, while a
router determines the speed of the network connection.

4. Security: A modem does notprovide any security features, whilea router
provides security features, such as firewalls and encryption.

5. Wireless connectivity: Amodem does not provide wirelessconnectivity, while a
router provides wireless connectivity through Wi-Fi.

In conclusion, a modem and a router are two different devices that areessential
for connecting to the internet and creating a network. While a modemconnects
your computer to the internet, a router connects multiple devices on anetwork
and provides security features to protect your network from hackers andmalware.
It is important to choose the right modem and router for your needs toensure a
fast, secure, and reliable internet connection.
