Q3           Whatare some mind-blowing facts about Google?

A3           Geet Kaur, Former Advertising Manager(2016–2020)16h

The second-mostvaluable brand in the world wasn't always Google. It was an
obedient digital puppy that just found andgot things for internet users
repeatedly while playing fetch long before itbecame a go-to word.

The small G, a 1995Ph.D. research project at Stanford University, eventually
developed into the$367 billion big G that we know and love/hate today. The
global digital titanis no longer content to just retrieve links; instead, it is
pursuing meatier, more significant goals, such as achieving the world's fastest
internetconnections, making human drivers unnecessary, and, well, not
really,eliminating death.

1. Sergey Brin and Larry (Lawrence) Page met bychance.

Page, who was 22 atthe time and had just graduated from the University of
Michigan with a degreein computer engineering, thinks about getting his Ph.D.
at Stanford. Page isgiven a tour of the campus by Brin, who was already a Ph.D.
candidate at theelite university at the age of 21. It was a historic meeting of
the minds backin 1995, as destiny would have it.

2. Google was originally named BackRub.

In 1996, Page andBrin worked together on the trailblazing idea of a "web
crawler,"which they oddly dubbed BackRub.Some people think that the name of the
first search engine was a reference togetting backlinks. BackRub, which
provided access to Brin and Page's firsthomepages in the '90s, remained on
Stanford's servers for more than a yearuntil it ran out of capacity.

3. Google is a play on the word "googol."

Page and Brinregistered the domain name for their mushrooming project as Google
on September15, 1997, a play on"googol," a mathematical word denoted by the
number one followed by100 zeros. The name alluded to the apparently limitless
quantity of datathat the clever duo had built their inexperienced search engine
to gather, interpret, and disseminate. Many people questioned if Google was a
typo for Google.

4. Google's first doodle was a Burning Man stick figure.

Page and Brindeveloped the first doodle in August 1998 as an out-of-office
announcement thatthey had left for the Burning Man event. The famous Man was
placed beneath thesecond "o" in Google's logo by the future billionaires. Check
thisout, dude.

5. Google's first office was a rented garage.

So typical of aSilicon Valley start-up, yes? The business's original location
was SusanWojcicki's garage on Santa Margarita Avenue in Menlo Park,
California, beginning in September 1998. Wojcicki is employee number 16 for
Google. She isthe sister of 23andMe founder Anne Wojcicki. She started off as
Google's firstmarketing manager and is now YouTube's CEO. Regarding the home
where Google wasfounded, the internet giant naturally purchased it. Then it
piled sweets, snacks, and lava lamps inside the suburban ranch-style home.

6. A former caterer for The Grateful Dead was Google'sfirst chef.

In order to get thepost, which he held for seven years, chef Charlie Ayers won
a cook-off judgedby Google's workers, who numbered only 40 at the time. Ayers
first providedfood for the Grateful Dead in return for free entrance to their
illustriousperformances, but gradually took over the band's catering. He
finally served4,000 lunches and dinners every day at Google's Mountain View,
California,headquarters in 10 cafés.

7. Google New York began at a Starbucks on 86th Street.

At a Starbucks inNew York City, Google unofficially launched its New York
branch in 2000. Asingle salesperson served as its manager. At its posh, 2.9
million square footNew York headquarters, a former Port Authority facility on
111 8th Ave.,hundreds of "NYooglers" are now clocking in each day.

8. Swedish Chef is a language preference in Googlesearch.

Who knew? Grundymorn-dee burn-dee that much is true. In 2001, Google channeled
its inneryodeling Muppet and began accepting search terms and outcomes written
inSwedish Chef (called Bork Bork Bork, to be technical). You may also use
ElmerFudd, Pirate, Klingon, Pig Latin, and, of course, Hacker to amuse
Google'salgorithm (a.k.a. 1337sp34k).

9. Gmail was launched on April fool’s Day, no joke.

Google debuted Gmail on April 1, 2004, in abizarrely phrased statement that was
widely misinterpreted as a hoax, playingon Silicon Valley's longtime practice
of performing April fool’s Day pranks. No, Google Gulp wasn't it? It was a
masterful double fake that served as theforerunner of a Google staple that
today benefits millions of people daily allover the globe.

10. Googlers ride colorful "bikes" around theGoogleplex.

The Googleplexcampus commuter bike program was first introduced in 2007 with a
small fleet ofbrilliant blue Huffy bikes. Then the silly "clown bikes"
appeared.Today, Google employees may ride more than 1,000 "bikes,"
beachcruisers with baskets in vibrant colors, around the two-mile Google
MountainView campus. It's odd that none of the motorcycles are locked. The
closest setof wheels is simply "borrowed" by the staff. When finished,
theyneatly leave them outside the entrances to the offices for use by other
Googleemployees.

11. Google negotiated its acquisition of YouTube atDenny's over mozzarella
sticks.

Steven Chen, aco-founder of YouTube, said that the group asked themselves,
"Where is alocation where none of us would go?" since they didn't want to meet
in anoffice. It turns out the location was a Denny's in Palo Alto, California.
Handswere shaken as mozzarella sticks were devoured. For Chen and his
fellowco-founders Jawed Karim and Chad Hurley, the historic purchase in 2006
was aGrand Slam. For the moment, not awful. Google invested $1.65 billion on
what would grow to bethe most popular video-sharing website on the Internet.

12. Its leaders are in it for the long haul.

Before the businesswent public in 2004, the three co-founders—Eric Schmidt,
Larry Page, and SergeyBrin—agreed to collaborate for 20 years, according to a
2008 interview withFortune by Schmidt, who is presently the executive chairman
of Alphabet and wasthe CEO of Google at the time.

13. The early days of Google were not super glamorous.

Schmidt revealed toLinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman that the former CEO's
initial office at thefirm was an 8 by 12-foot area that he shared with the
company's then VP ofengineering, Amit Singhal, during an interview for
Hoffman's Masters of Scalepodcast.

14. The company helped fight fictional vampires.

senior vicepresident of operations Urs Hoelzle, was one of the company's first
workers.

16. It speaks many languages.

The initial tenlanguage versions of the website that were made public in 2000
were French,German, Italian, Swedish, Finnish, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch,
Norwegian, andDanish.

17. Google image search launched in a big way.

In 2001, thebusiness launched Google Image search, offering customers a
staggering 250million photographs to browse. Not bad for a first day.

18. When it wentpublic, Google was valued as much as General Motors.

Q6           Whatreasons are there for not using a metal spoon for honey?

A6           Tommy C,15h

Honey is a belovedsweetener and ingredient that has been used for thousands of
years. However, there is a common belief that metal spoons should not be usedto
scoop honey. So, why is this?

One reason foravoiding metal spoons when handling honey is that they can cause
the honey to oxidize, which canaffect its taste and texture. When honey comes
into contact withmetal, it can cause a chemical reaction that breaks down
someof the sugars in the honey and leads to a metallic taste. This isespecially
true for acidic or low-moisture honeys, which are more susceptibleto oxidation.

Another reason for avoiding metal spoons with honey isthat they can be
difficult to clean. Honey has asticky consistency that can cling to metal
surfaces, making it hard to remove. This can lead to the growth of bacteria and
other microorganisms, which canspoil the honey and make it unsafe to eat.

So, what should youuse instead of a metal spoon for honey? One popular option
is a wooden spoon. Wooden spoonsare non-reactive and won't cause the honey to
oxidize, and they are also easierto clean than metal spoons. Another option is
a plastic spoon, which is alsonon-reactive and easy to clean.

Interestingly, the belief that metal spoons should notbe used with honey has
been around for centuries. In"The Tale of the Honeyguide," a traditional
folktale from Africa, itis said that using a metal spoon with honey will anger
the honeyguide bird, whichleads people to honey in the wild. The belief is also
mentioned in variousother sources, including the Bible and the works of the
ancient Greekphilosopher Aristotle.

One surprising factabout honey is that it never spoils. Archaeologists have
found jars of honey inEgyptian tombs that are thousands of years old, and the
honey is still edible. This is because honey has a high sugar content and low
moisture, which makes itinhospitable to bacteria and other microorganisms.

So, while thebelief that metal spoons should not be used with honey may have
some basis infact, it's not necessarily a hard and fast rule. Ultimately, the
most important thing is tohandle honey with care and ensure that it is stored
and handled in a way thatmaintains its quality and freshness.

Q8           Howdoes Omega 3 help diabetes?

A8           Noelia Prato,Pharmacology atPharmacology (2000–present)18h

Omega-3 fatty acids have been widely studied for theirhealth benefits,
including reducing inflammation, improving heart health, andsupporting brain
function.

But did you knowthat Omega-3 can also help with diabetes?

In this article, wewill explore the ways in which Omega-3 can benefit those
with diabetes and helpthem manage their condition.

What is Diabetes?

Before we dive intohow Omega-3 can help with diabetes, it's important to
understand what diabetesis. Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how
your body uses glucose, which is a type of sugar that is your body's main source
of energy. When you eatfood, your body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose,
which then enters yourbloodstream. Insulin, which is a hormone produced by the
pancreas, helpsglucose enter your cells, where it can be used for energy.

In people withdiabetes, their bodies either do not produce enough insulin or do
not useinsulin effectively, leading to high blood glucose levels. This can
cause arange of health problems, including heart disease, kidney damage, nerve
damage,and vision problems.

How Omega-3 Can Help Diabetes

There are severalways in which Omega-3 can help those with diabetes:

1. Reducing Inflammation

Inflammation is anatural response to injury or infection in the body, but when
it becomeschronic, it can lead to a range of health problems, including
diabetes. Omega-3 fatty acids have been shownto reduce inflammation in the
body, which can help to improve insulinsensitivity and lower blood glucose
levels.

2. Improving Insulin Sensitivity

Insulin resistanceis a major factor in the development of type 2 diabetes.
Omega-3 fatty acidshave been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, which means
that your body can use insulin moreeffectively. This can help to lower blood
glucose levels and reduce the risk ofdeveloping diabetes.

3. Lowering Triglycerides

Triglycerides are atype of fat that are found in your blood. High levels of
triglycerides areassociated with an increased risk of heart disease, which is a
commoncomplication of diabetes. Omega-3fatty acids have been shown to lower
triglyceride levels, which can helpto reduce the risk of heart disease in those
with diabetes.

4. Improving Heart Health

Heart disease is amajor complication of diabetes, and people with diabetes are
at a higher riskof developing heart disease than those without diabetes.
Omega-3 fatty acids have beenshown to improve heart health by reducing
inflammation, loweringtriglyceride levels, and reducing the risk of abnormal
heart rhythms.

How toIncorporate Omega-3 into Your Diet

There are severalways to incorporate Omega-3 into your diet:…..

Flaxseeds and chia seeds are also good sources of Omega-3.

It's important totalk to your doctor before taking any supplements, especially
if you are takingmedication for diabetes.

Conclusion

Inconclusion, Omega-3 fatty acids can be a valuable addition to the diet of
thosewith diabetes. Byreducing inflammation, improving insulin sensitivity,
lowering triglyceridelevels, and improving heart health, Omega-3 can help to
manage diabetes andreduce the risk of complications. By incorporating
Omega-3-rich foods into yourdiet, or taking supplements under the guidance of
your doctor, you can reap thebenefits of this essential nutrient.

Q9           Hasthe station master got any right to constantly change the
platform numbers tobe allotted to some of the trains at the station? This
happens at Rourkela Jn.Why isn't any strict action taken, as, many a times,
causes inconvenience topassengers?

A9           Prashant Tiwari,Indian RailwaysEnthusiast4h

We often go through a situation where we are informed tochange the platform
just before the arrival of our train, and we wonder why do they change the
platform at the last moment.

To find the answer,we will first look at how the whole system at railway
stations works.

There are variousclasses of railway stations in India based on their footfall.
I’m dividing theminto two categories so that we can understand the function
easily.

1. Small stations (2–3 platforms)

2. Big stations (4 and above platforms)

• Small stations:The decision to allot a platform to a train is made manually
at these stations. The station master, underthe guidance of the section
controller, decides the platform number for aparticular train. At such
stations, platform No. 1 is generallyfound to be very busy in comparison to
other platforms, as these stations aresmall and have fewer trains halting in a
period of 24 hours. Mostly trains skipthe station through a main line, which
can be a midline or at platform No. 1 or2.

A change of platform at small stations can be due to thefollowing reasons: -

If a train is running late and there is acrossing with another train,

If a train is decided to be overtaken byanother train,

if there is some maintenance work going onat the main line or main platform.

If a train is facing any technical ormechanical failure which needs to be
checked thoroughly.

There can be a fewmore random or minor reasons for changing platforms at small
stations.

• Big Stations: These stations are bigger in size andcan handle hundreds of
trains in 24 hours. They generally have 2–8 station masters, a
computerisedpanel, a big display, and a section controller. Deciding a platform
forany XYZ train depends on multiple factors at these stations. The decision
takenhere involves 4–10 authorities who decides a suitable platform for a
train.Apart from the situations mentioned in the first point, here are a few
morecommon scenarios where a platform is changed: -

If the fixed platform is cleared for another train,

If a section controller suggests anotherplatform for various reasons, like
a change of crew, any complaint to be takencare of, etc.,

if a train route is diverted or scheduledfor short termination.

if the platform is occupied by another train.

If a train movement is blocking a fewplatforms and causing a delay for
other trains at that particular time,

There can be a fewmore scenarios where the station master can change a platform
for a particulartrain.

In Conclusion:Station masters have a right to change the platform of a
particular train, butthey can do this only with a valid reason under the
guidence of sectioncontroller.

Do share otherpossible scenarios in the comment section if I missed them to
mention here.

My note- In Cherthalai, a major  station betweenAlleppy and Ernakulam, in the
recent past all arriving and departing trains arereceived in Platform 2.There
is no escalator. Platform 1 is kept empty.

Reason told is theplatform is not having more than 2 track change. Platform 1
hasabout 5 track change.

This is the information I have received from knowledgeablelocal people; It has
caused a lot of suffering.
