*The Vedic Stellar Saga *

*Note: A research paper by a scholar NB I cannot write this ass such
originally sir Pl pardon me Others may be able to do it like Gopala. How
our ancestors were so brilliant to name stellar with the bare eyes and
mental acumen which the modern science did similarly. KR IRS 25423*

The same conclusion can be inferred from the well-known stellar saga of
3059 BCE starring (the deities as the real stars of heaven) viz. *Uṣas
*as *Rohiṇī
*(Aldebaran), *Prajāpati *as *Mr̥ gaśīrsa *(the head of Orion) and *Rudra *as
*Mr̥ gavyādha *or *Tiṣya *the killer of Orion (allegedly Sirius, though
rather of uncertain and disputable identity which see further below):

The story narrates how Rudra the archer filled with anger pierced
Prajāpati with the three-starred or three partite arrow (represented by
the three stars in the belt of Orion) and among his other deeds he knocked
out Pūṣan’s teeth with the end of his bow. Hence, Pūṣan came to be
known as *deva karūḷatin *“toothless god” subsequently in the ritual
called *karambhād
*“oatmeal-eater” (for having no teeth to chew hard food), both terms being
obviously symbolic of the arrival of the warm season, the central and most
comfortable period of the year when the winter (sun) finally lost its
biting power (since in Vedic times the year had only three seasons, divided
into four months each called *caturmāsya*). (KR: Now one may know what is
chaturmasya vrata by sages)

*NB*. This was in sharp contrast with the god Varuna (also an Āditya)
called *deva jumbaka *or *viklidha *viz. “the bucktoothed god” (Taittirīya
Brāhmaṇa III 9.3.15; Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa XIII 3.6.5) as the
personification of the biting power of the winter [sun] (Maitrāyaṇī
Saṃhitā I 10.12; Kāṭhaka Saṃhitā 36.6).

As for Rudra, there are serious objections against his identification
with *Tiṣya
*or the star Sirius. However, *Tiṣya *(of which a cognate is Avestan
*Tištriia*) it could have not represented the star Sirius since this very
term was derived from the Vedic compound *tri-str̥ *viz. “three stars” {KR
one can now know how the word Sirius from Greek was derived at from
“tri-str” Sanskrit root; but west adopts from the Greek, knowing well or
unknowingly serius is from India.}

originally denoting the tripartite arrow (thrown by Rudra at
Prajāpati) represented
by the three stars in the belt of Orion (correctly deciphered by Tilak
Freedom fighter in his book The Orion), ir. (=Indo-Iranian) **tistriia-, *im
Aia. (=Old Indo-Aryan) dissimiliert zu **tisrija- *> ved. *tisíya- *;
Etymon **tri-str-iio *- 'der zum Dreigestirn Gehörig). Tilak also argued
that “Rudra is the presiding deity of *Ārdrā (KR Tiruvadirai) *(viz.
Betelgeuse star in Orion) and we may therefore suppose Rudra to be
represented by the star in the right shoulder of Orion” (Tilak) . Tilak
further noticed that Rudra is known by “his appearance as *Kirāta *or
hunter” (Tilak) (KR: have you heard the KIRATHAARJUNEEYAM THE HUNTER
ARJUNA?) and “that he seems to be described as followed by dogs or rather
as their master (Vajra. Saniya SAMHITAI. 16.27)” (Kr: Pl watch the Rudra
and hunter dog later I will show you the modern photo which our ancestors
saw then and named correctly)

*NB. *Tilak referred here to Vājasaneyi Saṃhitā 16.27 *námaḥ śvaníbhyo
mr̥ gayúbhyaś ca vo námaḥ *but the next verse is even more affirmative for
it enumerates many names of Rudra: *námaḥ śvábhyaḥ śvápatibhyaś ca vo námo
námo bhavā́ya ca rudrā́ya ca námaḥ *etc. [KR have we noticed Siva with Dog?
That is Serius)

Thus, Tilak concluded that “This may show that the Vedic poets knew of the
dogs near the star of Rudra” (Tilak 1893:126).

Those two dogs known as *Sārameyas *viz. “the offspring of *Saramā *the
bitch” (on the identity of hers, see further below), also considered to be
the dogs of *Yama *the god of the dead, were quite correctly identified by
Tilak with the stars *Canis Major *and *Canis Minor *(cf. Tilak ).

Tilak also added that “The principal star in Canis Minor is still
called *Procyon
*= Greek *Prokuon*, Sanskrit *Praśvan*, meaning “the Fore dog”. It shows
that the previous star (viz. Sirius) was once called *Kuon *(=κύων) by the
Greeks” (Tilak) .

However, the Vedic seers made themselves perfectly clear as to the identity
of Rudra, for they invoked him among other *ástr̥ n *“archers” (Rig-Veda X
64.8), the term being fully synonymous with *dhanus *or *dhanuṣa *“armed
with a bow and arrows, a bowman” denoting the asterism of the same name
known in the West as Sagittarius. Besides, autumn is his season, cf.
Maitrāyaṇī Saṃhitā I 10.20 (160) *śarád vaí rudrásya yóniḥ *“autumn is
Rudra’s abode” while Taittirīya Brāhmaṇa I 6.10 similarly designates
autumn as Rudra’s sister *śarád vā́ asya ámbikā svásā*.

*5.The Scorching One*

Thus, irrespectively, whether was Rudra represented by the asterism *Ārdrā
*(=Betelgeuse) or by the three stars in the belt of Orion, or eventually by
the constellation Sagittarius, the star Sirius must have represented
someone else, and that could not have been anyone but Pusan the toothless
god. This assumption is verified by the following three uncontestably
proofs:

1) In the year 3059 BCE when the Vedic stellar saga took place the star
Aldebaran was aligned in her heliacal rising with the vernal equinox, while
Sirius appeared in his heliacal rising on the horizon (40 days ahead of
Aldebaran on the ecliptic) precisely on the eve of May in the same year.
The appearance of Sirius, viz. Pūṣan on the eve of May (after the
disappearance of Orion), announcing the sailing-season when the auspicious
winds began to blow in the Mediterranean, was the sign to the seafarers of
the commencement of save and secure journeying. In ancient Rome Orion was
associated with winter and inauspicious dangerous winds on the sea. The
works of the classical Roman writers indisputably testify that the presence
of *saevus Orion *viz. “fierce Orion” (Virgil, *Aeneis *VII 719) was
considered *nautis infesturs Orion turbaret hibernum mare *“as long as
Orion, the sailors’ foe should toss the wintry sea” (Horace, *Epodon *XV 7)
inauspicious and hostile to the sailors (cf. Hillebrandt 1980/1927:289,
436, note 104).

2) The original Greek term for the star Canis Major viz. Σείριος “burning,
scorching, searing” (since his visible heliacal rising marked the season of
greatest heat) is a semantic equivalent to and fully synonymous with the
Vedic *Āghr̥ ṇi *denoting the so-called “dog’s heat” or “dog days of
summer” of which the most recognizable indication is the puffing of the
dogs, viz. “audible strenuous breathing in short quick breaths with
protruding tongues”. Furthermore, the Vedic root *pūṣ/puṣ *of which the
divine name *Pūṣan *is a derivative, is related to the Slavic verb
*puhati *(akin
to German *pfuffen, *English *to puff*) having the following meanings:

a) “to blow (of wind), to breathe out (of humans and animals); b) to
breathe audibly and/or strenuously in short quick breaths (as after running
or hard work) in the manner of dogs.

What is significant in this context, is that Pūṣan himself is indeed
identified with *Vāta *“Wind“ by the Vedic seers (Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa III
8.3.21-22), being consubstantial with “breath, breathing or spirit“, which
testify of Pūṣan’s genetic relationship with the authentic Slavic meaning
of the root *pūṣ/puṣ *“to blow, to breathe (out)” as presented above.

3) The appearance of Sirius, viz. Pūṣan (during the period of its
heliacal rising in May), was accompanied by the presence of mysterious
cosmic navy as delineated in the Rig-Vedic verse by Bharadvāja cited
above, already identified with the constellation known in the West as *Argo
Navis *by Tilak: “Thus the Vedic works appear to place a celestial dog and
a celestial ship at the entrance of the other world and these can be easily
identified with the Greek constellations of Argo Navis and Canis – if we
suppose the Milky Way to be boundary of Heaven in those days” (Tilak
1893:110). The ancient “Swift Navy” or Argo Navis came to be divided in the
18th century by the French astronomer Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille into modern
constellations called Carina (the hull), Puppis (the poop deck) and Vela
(the sails). However, though Bharadvāja did not specified the exact number
of the ships in the navy, the Rig-Vedic verse I 182.6 (associated with the
Aśvin twins) cited previously above recognized precisely *cátasro nā́vo *“a
fleet of four ships”, the fourth of which might have been either Pyxis or
even Antlia (see *Figure 1 *below).{KR; अवविद्धं तौग्र्यमप्स्वन्तरनारम्भणे

*NB*. Unaware of Pūṣan’s identification with *Vāta *“Wind“ (presumably
auspicious), B.G.Tilak (quoting Rig Veda I 161.13) “where it is expressly
stated that the dog awakened the Ṛibhus, the genii of seasons, at the end
of the year” came at an erroneous conclusion: “Sāyaṇa proposes to
interpret *śvā́nam *in the original by ‘wind’ but it is evidently an
error…” (Tilak 1893:113).{KR: सुषुप्वांस ऋभवस्तदपृच्छतागोह्य क इदं नो

“Ṛbhus <https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/ribhus#hinduism>, reposing in
the solar orb, you inquire: who awakens us, unapprehensive (Sun), to this
office (of sending rain). The Sun replies: the awakener is the wind; and
the year (being ended), you again today light up this (world).”

*Commentary by Sāyaṇa: Ṛgveda-bhāṣya*

The awakener is the wind: śvānam bodhayitāram = the awakener is the dog;
but, śvānam = antarkṣe svasantam vāyum, the reposer in the firmament, the
wind; saṃvatsare idam adyā
<https://www.wisdomlib.org/definition/adya#hinduism> vyakhyata, you have
made this world today luminous, after the year has expired; i.e. the rainy
season has passed, the rays of the sun and moon are again visible.

Though Pūṣan is never called a dog, the above verse *saṃvatsará idám
adyā́ vy àkhyata *“after a year, here today, ye opened your eyes”
indirectly confirms that the year commenced at the appearance of Sirius
Dog-star on the eve of May. Since Sirius = Pūṣan = Wind there is no error
in Sāyaṇa’s interpretation. Besides, Pūṣan indeed was pleaded *Śivo
bhava*! viz. “be *Śiva *(=auspicious) to us!” (Rig-Veda VIII 4.18).
Incidentally, Rudra later known as Śiva already in the Maitrāyanī
Saṃhitā XVI 17 inherited almost all characteristics specific of Pūṣan
as *pathaspati *Lord of the paths, *paśupā(ti) *guardian of cattle, *kapardin
*wearing braided and knotted hair like the cowrie shell, etc.

*NB. *The same natural conditions must have greatly influenced the making
of the Greek myth about the exploits of Jason and the Argonauts. N.Nodilo
(1981/1890:683) found the main personalities of the myth to be all
characterized (especially due to their swiftness) by their kinship with the
Wind. [ KR Formation of a star cluster from Rig Vedam , vajna samhitai etc
