CULTURAL QA 06-2023-13

Q1           What is the difference between staticelectricity and current
electricity?

A1           Aravind Khumar, Electrical Engineerfrom CEG6y

Current is the flow of chargesand is calculated by the rate of flow of charges
in a given time. So this iscalled as the current.

But as the word static refers the charges are at thestate of rest i.e they do
not move. But why is itcalled static electricity? If the charges move they are
called current. Considering the analogies likegetting electrocuted from
carpets, charged metals, circuit boards etc. In allthese analogies the charges
remain static i.e they do not move.Their total charge is the algebraic sum of
each of the charges in the system. But when we touch a systemthat is charged,
We are at a lower potential than the system is at. Hence in order to balance
thenatures equilibrium, the charges move from the system to our body i.e a
currentflows through us.

This is reason weget a spike when we touch charged bodies. Hence this is called
Staticelectricity ( charges are static unless they are in contact with some
lowerpotential body). This isthe reason why it is necessary to discharge
circuit boards by earthing them toavoid a shock, it is due to static
electricity.

My note-On account of the door knobs which can get charge from lightening etc,
madeeither oval or round so that it cannot absorb the charge. This is more
important in hill stations.

Q2           Why do airlines pilots keep thecockpit door open during boarding
operations?

A2           Vishnu Ravi, Aviation Enthusiast |Content Creator 9h

Airlines pilotschoose to leave the cockpit door open during boarding procedures
for variousreasons, as stated by the search results:

Facilitating the movement of individuals: Thecockpit door is kept open to
accommodate the entry and exit of multipleindividuals into the flight deck
before departure. For example, the First Officer is required to temporarily
leave the cockpit toconduct a pre-flight external walk-around before returning.

Coordinating with flight attendants: The flightattendants work in coordination
with the pilots to manage the boarding process. If there are issues related to
catering, aircraft cleanliness, or necessaryequipment, the flight attendants
can communicate with the pilots through theopen cockpit door.

Addressing security concerns: While an armoredand locked cockpit door helps
reduce the risk of unauthorized interference frompassengers, it can also create
other security challenges. When the cockpit door is closed, the pilots may not
be aware of potential security threats outside the cockpit.

Meeting operational requirements: Opening theflight deck door during flight is
essential to cater to the pilots' biologicalneeds and fulfill operational
requirements related to safety.

In conclusion, keeping the cockpit door open during boarding operations allows
for thenecessary movement of people and equipment, enables communication
betweenflight attendants and pilots, and addresses security concerns.

Q3           What are some facts about India thatIndians are generally unaware
of?

A3           Jai Narayan,May 31

Spanning over 2950km east-west and 3200 km north-south (northernmost point of
India is disputedand southernmost point is considered as southernmost point of
mainland India),India is geographically vaster than you may have thought.

Following are someinteresting geographical facts about India:

Northernmost point of India is closer to Ukraine, EastEurope than it is to
southernmost point!

Westernmost point of India is closer to Eritrea, EastAfrica than it is to
easternmost point!

Easternmost point of India is closer to North Koreathan it is to westernmost
point!

Kanyakumari is the southernmost point of mainland India. However, taking Andaman
and Nicobar Islands into account, Indira Point is thesouthernmost point of
India. And, it is closer to Australiathan it is to northernmost point!
Fascinating!

Q4           What is the best color to paint aroom with a white ceiling?

A4           Gopala Krishnan, Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)0y

It depends on thetype of room. If it is kitchen/ work area, dark brown is most
suited.

If it is Halleither white/yellow cream color is best.

If it is bed room, light blue/ green is best

My note- tastes may vary. I told what felt to me.

Q5           Why is the cockpit on airlinerscalled a "flightdeck"?

A5           John Scallan, Former Radar Tech atU.S. Air Force (1974–1978)16h

Back in the olden days here was a type of aircraftknown as a flying boat. The
flying boat was designed to fly over long stretchesof open water.

The area containing the pilots was large and the controlwheels looked similar
to a ships wheel.

Behind the pilots was a station for the flight engineer andnext to that there
was a station for the navigator. This large, combined areawas called a deck
using nautical terms.

At the timeaviators just borrowed existing nautical terms to describe their
aircraft. The term cockpit describes amuch smaller area meant for a single
pilot.

Flight deck wasthe appropriate term for a much larger area containing a much
larger crew.
