CULTURAL QA 07-2023-01A Q1 Can front-load liquid detergentbe used in a top load washing machine?
A1 Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004)0y InIndia nowadays we get detergent liquids from different companies suitable forfront load, top load and bucket hand wash. Olden days whenpressure cooker was introduced it was provided with a bottom plate, containers for differentcooking items etc.Gradually house wives started removing them and place one bigvessel for rice cooking and on it if necessary an oval plate to cook dhal, potato etc. Latercompanies stopped giving bottom plate and separators. Similarly home makers started using front load for topload, bucket etc., and interchanging and it come as a practice and companies alsostarted provide a common type ofdetergent liquid . Q2 What is one fact that you know is truebut still blows your mind? A2 Vipul Mehta If you are payingin cash or through your debit card for your purchases, you are subsidizing therewards for customers who pay through their credit cards. Yes. That’s true. This is how it works: Credit cardcompanies (or banks) pay rewards to its users in order to incentivize the usageof their company’s credit card. These rewards usually come in the form ofreward points/miles etc. etc. My note- Mainadvantage I felt by credit card is the option to pay bill after 45 days. Onemergency it provides for paying hospital bills. (Now, at this point, one may ask why thecredit card companies want us to pay through their credit card. The answer to this is that these companies charge money fromthe merchants who accept the credit card at their store. This charge variesfrom a seemingly innocuous 2% to as high as 4% of the transaction. This isreferred to as ‘merchant fees’.) The rewards thatthe credit card users get from the credit card issuer companies is partly paidoff by the income that these companies get from the merchants i.e. from the merchant fees. The merchants, who are there to make profits and earn alivelihood, shift the burden of merchant fees from themselves to the customersby incorporating the merchant fees in the prices of the products. Now, theoretically, the merchants should only charge the extra amount from credit card users onlyas they are the ones forcing the merchants to pay high fees. However, thisrarely happens. The merchants, to cover their merchant fees, usually increasethe prices across the board for all the customers irrespective of the mode ofpayment. What this causes isthat the credit card user who gets handsome rewards from the credit cardcompanies is compensated for the higher price paid by him/her. However, the customer who paid throughcash(/debit card/basic credit card with no rewards) lost out on money as theyalso had to pay a higher price on the products without getting anything inreturn. In this scenaro, Merchants=No profit/no loss as they passed the burden of merchant fees on to thecustomers. Creditcard companies/banks= In profit, as they get merchant fees from the merchants. Credit card users=In profit, as they usually get handsome rewards Customers who paid throughcash/debit= the people who lose out. Q3 Is it possible for a plane to landwithout touching the runway? A3 Rebecca Williams, Experience inAviation Wed It is possible fora plane to land without touching the runway. This is called a **touch-and-golanding**. In atouch-and-go landing, the plane touches down on the runway, but it does notcome to a complete stop. Instead, the pilot applies the throttle and takes offagain immediately. Touch-and-golandings are used for a variety of reasons. They are often used by pilots during training to practicelanding. They can also be used to check the condition of the runwayor to reposition the plane on the runway. To perform a touch-and-go landing, the pilot will followthe same steps as they would for a normal landing, but they will apply the throttle sooner and take off again before the planecomes to a complete stop. Touch-and-golandings can be a bit tricky, but they are a valuable skill for pilots tolearn. They can help pilots to become more proficient at landing and to developtheir skills in a safe environment. Q4 Should I drink tea after eating fruits? A4 Sheetal Kushwah, 7 years of experiencein natureopathy 6h There is no particular disallowdrinking tea in the wake of eating natural products. As a matter of fact, consumingtea in the wake of eating fruits is by and large protected.Notwithstanding, it's essential to take note of that the impacts might shiftrelying upon the sort of products of the soil you consume. The following are a couple of interesting points: Assimilation: Certain individuals accept thatdrinking tea following eating organic products can obstruct processing. Thisconviction originates from the idea that tea's tannins can disrupt theassimilation of specific supplements. Be that as it may, the effect of tea onabsorption is commonly negligible, and it might shift from one individual toanother. Iron retention: Certain organic products, forexample, citrus organic products, are plentiful in L-ascorbic acid, whichimproves iron assimilation. Then again, tea, especially dark tea, containsintensifies that can hinder iron retention. Assuming you are worried about ironlevels, you should abstain from drinking tea just in the wake of polishing offiron-rich natural products or feasts. Individual inclinations: At last, whether you ought todrink tea subsequent to eating organic products relies upon your own inclinations.Certain individuals partake in the blend, while others could think that it isless engaging. Organic productsadditionally contain water, so drinking them along with tea can additionallyadd to your hydration levels. All in all, thereis no severe vote down drinking tea in the wake of eating natural products. Itby and large boils down to individual inclination and individualcontemplations, like processing and iron ingestion. In the event that youpartake in the blend and it causes no uneasiness, there is no great explanationto stay away from it. A6 Achintya Paradkar, Learning PhysicsEvery day! 8y No. It is not possible if the atmospheric temperature isabove freezing point of water. You might use anyother refrigeration techniques like "Vapor Absorption Cycle", "SolarRefrigeration", "Vacuum Refrigeration" or "LiquidNitrogen" if you don't wantconvention refrigerator but in order to form ice refrigeration is must. The best way is to use a vacuum pump to reduce thepressure inside the water container till the boiling point is reached. This will cause the water to evaporate absorbing latent heat of vaporisation.Due to this removal of heat, the remaining water droplets will crystallizeforming ice. P.S. Just make surethat this newly formed ice doesn't get sucked inside the vacuum pump. Q7 How was ice made when there was nofridge? A7 PREETI PRABHA, We provide Wash, Dry& Fold within 2 hours per Individual. Wed Before the invention of refrigerators, people usedvarious methods to make ice and keep things cold. Here are a fewhistorical methods: Icehouses: These were structures or undergroundchambers specifically designed to store ice. During winter, ice would beharvested from frozen lakes, rivers, or ponds and stored in these insulatedspaces. The icehouses were well-insulated with materials like straw, sawdust,or even cork to prevent melting. This stored ice would be used throughout theyear for preserving food or for cooling drinks. Iceboxes: Iceboxes were wooden or metalcontainers with insulated walls. They had a compartment for storing ice at thetop and a lower compartment for keeping food. A block of ice would be placed inthe top compartment, and the cold air would circulate downwards, keeping thelower compartment cool. The ice would need to be replaced regularly as itmelted. Natural Ice Harvesting: In colder climates, peoplewould wait for lakes and rivers to freeze over during winter. They would thencut blocks of ice from the frozen bodies of water and store them in icehousesor cellars with good insulation. Sawdust or other insulating materials would beused to minimize melting. Ice Delivery: In urban areas, ice would beharvested from frozen lakes or imported from colder regions and transported tohouseholds and businesses. Ice delivery companies would use ice-cutting tools, insulated wagons, and icehouses to transport and store the ice. Ice would bedelivered to homes, restaurants, and other establishments on a regular basis. Q8 Was there something that particularlybothered Hitler? A8 Ayomikun Abraham,un 26 Yes, there were several things that particularlybothered Adolf Hitler, the dictator of Nazi Germanyduring World War II. One of the major concerns for Hitler was the Treaty ofVersailles, which imposed harsh reparations andterritorial losses on Germany after World War I. Hitler viewed the treaty as ahumiliation for Germany and believed it was unfair. He was driven by a desire to overturn the treatyand restore Germany to its former glory. Hitler also held strong anti-Semiticbeliefs and harbored a deep hatred towards Jewish people. He blamed Jews for various societal problems, such as economic struggles andthe loss of World War I. This hatred manifested in the Holocaust, wheremillions of Jews and other minorities were persecuted and systematicallymurdered under Hitler's regime. Furthermore, Hitler was obsessed with achieving racialpurity and advancing the Aryan master race ideology. He propagated ideas of racial superiority, aiming to eliminate those heconsidered racially inferior, including Jews, Romani people, disabledindividuals, and others deemed undesirable. Hitler's expansionist ambitions and quest for Lebensraum(living space) for the German people were also significant concerns for him.He sought to conquer vast territories in Eastern Europe to establish Germandominance and create an empire that would endure for centuries. Hitler's beliefs and actions were deeply rooted inhatred, bigotry, and a quest for power. His ideologiesand the atrocities committed under his leadership have had a lasting impact onhistory and serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of extremist ideologiesand totalitarian regimes. Q8 Whichinvention has a curious story behind it? A8 Deep Thakar, Engineer | Observer |Photographer | AstrophileJun 25 One invention witha curious story behind it is the Slinky. The Slinky is a popular toy that consists of a helicalspring that can "walk" down stairs or slopes when pushed. It was invented by Richard James, a naval engineer, in the early1940s. The story goes thatRichard James was working on designing springs that could stabilize sensitiveequipment on ships during rough seas. One day, he accidentally knocked one of the springs off ashelf, and he watched as it gracefully "walked" down a series ofbooks, a stack of magazines, and finally onto a tabletop. This inspired him with the ideaof turning the spring into a toy. Richard James and his wife, Betty James, spent yearsperfecting the toy and eventually came up with the name "Slinky"because they liked how it sounded. They foundedJames Industries to manufacture and sell the Slinky, and it was firstdemonstrated at a Gimbelsdepartment store in Philadelphia in 1945. Initially, the Slinky didn't sell well, but the Jamesespersisted and eventually got a breakthrough when they persuaded a buyer from alarge department store to allow them to demonstrate the toy in-store.The demonstration was a huge success, and they soldout their entire inventory of 400 Slinkys in just 90 minutes. The Slinky went onto become an iconic toy, captivating generations of children and adults alike. Its simplicity and unique movement continue to fascinate people to this day, making it a classic and beloved invention with a surprisingly humble andaccidental origin story. Q9 What did money look like during theBritish Raj? A9 Gopalkrishna Vishwanath, Have alwaysbeen interested in History, once I didn't have to learn it formally Updated Mon I was not born during the British Raj. But I remember thatmoney minted during the British Raj was still in circulation and was validcurrency during my childhood. Mostof the money in circulation used for common day-to-day expenditure was in theform of coins and not currency notes. Even a one Annacoin worth 6 paise had great value. Here is a coin minted in the year 1915.Note that the value is writtenin English, Hindi, Urdu, Telugu, and Bengali. 16annas were equal to one rupee. In 1959 I felt likea pampered 10-year-old kid when my mom yielded to my nagging and parted withthis coin so that I could buy a packet of roasted peanuts from the pavementhawker. This coin was soprecious that even beggars would hesitate to ask for one anna. They wouldrequest at most one paisa which was a fraction of one anna. You could hear thembegging in a pathetic voice “Babujee, ek paisa de do. Bhagwaan aapka bhalakarega “ (Translation : Sir, please give me one paisa. God will favor you”) This was how acoin, double in value looked like. You could buy a Masala Dosa at an Udupirestaurant in Mumbai with this coin. And if any one ofus, little schoolboys, had this coin in our pockets, we would be called “rich”! How times have changed! Edited to add:Ithank Ajay Kumar Bisoi for retrieving this precious picture of a “one pice”coin. This was the lowest denomination coin those days. Edited to add on June 26, 2023 I thank Shri R.Chandrasekharan Kannammal for these additional images in his comment. My note- I still recollect, I was afraid of collecting100 rupee currency in a public auction in 1974’s. My salary was received above 350-00 rupees, but in smallerdenominations.
