What is kuri?

General Meaning of Kuri is a mark to identify. It isalso used to mean a small
chit fund. Something to remember is also told as makea kuri in the memory.

1. Kuri afterbath

Hindu men mark a kuri in the forehead using holy ashor sandal wood paste or
Tirumann. After visiting the temple the prasadamoffered may contain holy ash,
sandal wood paste, kumkum etc. Sandal wood pasteis worn by many young women in
addition to sindur in forehead. Smarthas weareither holy ash or sandal wood
paste. There are many smarthas wearing sandalwood paste with kumkum in the
centre. Especially in Kerala even in saivitetemple sandal wood paste is given
as prasadam. In most of the Ganapathi templealso sandal wood paste is given.

In vaishnavite temples only sandal wood paste is given.

Nowadays many keep prayers at home and either holy ashor sandal wood paste is
worn. Going to temples is occasional.  While many make  holy ash as paste and
worn, some wear justlike that. Women mostly go for sindur. Old women wear
sandal wood paste/ holy ash also.

Widowed women avoid using sindur. Either taken bath ornot, after washing face
Brahmin men wear holy ash/ sandal wood fresh beforeperforming sandhya.
