CULTURAL QA 07-2023-29A

Q1         Does cooling a room faster with lowertemperature help save
electricity in air conditioning units (AC)?

A1          Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at
Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now

Surely after setting a lower temperature and turbo ispressed, the compressor is
operated continuously.

If you set lowertemperature and simply switch ON, compressor starts later than
with turbo and operates at lower rate ofcooling.

However the difference in power consumption thoughmarginal, still less in 2nd
case.

Q2         How much time can one stay at JFKairport after landing? I’m
travelling from India and will land at 5 pm. Can wewait in the airport till the
next morning without doing the immigrationprocess?

A2          Nagesh Sagar, A concerned citizen.Deeply Indian and avid Humanist

No airport in the USA has a transit lounge. It is mandatory to go through Border
Control (immigration) after de-boardingthe aircraft and collecting your
luggage, going through Customs at JFK. After Customs you can emergeinto the
Arrival Hall and hang around there.

However, you willhave to be very wary of Security personnel for an overnighter
at JFK. Trolleys after baggagecollection have to be paid for and they unlock
only when you insert therequired US currency or swipe your International Credit
Card.

You have to be quick at releasing the trolley, otherwiseit locks again within
seconds.

Q3         Should I consult a cardiologist even ifI do not have any symptoms of
heart disease?

A3          Narayana Health, Health for all. Allfor health.8mo

It isadvisable to add a visit to a cardiologist as part of your yearly
healthcheckup even if you have not experienced any symptoms of heart disease.

This is especiallythe case if you have a family history of heart disease and
live a sedentarylifestyle.

Your cardiologistcan advise you on your current health condition and recommend
any lifestylechanges (if necessary) to help prevent the onset of heart disease.
This can alsohelp you to diagnose any silent heart attacks that do not show any
kind ofexternal symptoms.

Q4         Why does it always seem to take such along time before the doors of
a plane that just landed open and passengers canbegin to disembark?

A4          James Turner,Licensed InstrumentPilot, ASELJul 23

A couple ofreasons.

Firstly, the ground crew needs to get chocks under thelanding gear to make sure
than the plane doesn’t decide to wander off, especially when the jet way bumps
up the side.

The flight crew has disarm the emergency slides on thedoors. This involves
pulling a steel bar out of aholder on the floor that would normally pull the
slide out of it’s holder whenthe door was opened.

The jetway needs to be positioned up against the side ofthe aircraft, a job you
don’t rush because you could, you know, damage a veryexpensive piece of harder.

In my experience, all that usually gets done within abouttwo minutes of the
seat belt sign going off, which is prettygood, unless you have a really tight
connection)

Q4         What is something electrical engineersknow that others don't?

A4          Prakhar Pandey, Engineer by mind andwriter by heart.Wed

Have you people ever noticed a change in Sound of ceilingfan when it is
operated on the inverter rather than normal power supply…weknow the actual
reason why….

Our fans or otherequipment are designed for the AC. While inverter store the
powerin battery and when needed convert back DC to AC supply…but it can't
convert itin a perfect sine wave… so due to the introduction of Harmonics…sound
changes.

The distribution ofcurrent over the cross section of conductor in uniform for
DC only.

In AC the currentis not present throughout the cross section but it resides
only on the surfaceof the conductor. This iscalled as skin effect.

Q5         Why does the Dead Sea have ten timesthe salt concentration of any
ocean?

A5          RI Shohag,19h

The reason is that the Dead Sea is an inland sea, meaningit has no connection
with any other large ocean.

In other words, all the salttransported by the rivers that flow there have
been concentrated in thatreservoir for millions of years. The water evaporates
and so the concentrationincreases.

There are some theories that it dried up completely a fewmillennia ago, leaving
a huge salt pan. But I don't think this would affect theactual salt
concentration that much.

What is known isthat around 200 million years ago it would have had a
connection with theMediterranean, which was interrupted with the elevation of
the land that separatesthem today.

My note-Very informative answer.

Q6         How does the airliner crew know if theplane is overweight before
takeoff?

A6          Vishnu Ravi,Aerospace Engineer |Aviation Enthusiast & Content
CreatorJul 23

Before takeoff, ensuring the airliner's weight is well-managed becomes
paramount, significantlyimpacting its performance and safety.

The airliner crew employs several effective methods todetermine if the plane is
overweight, guaranteeing asmooth and secure flight for all passengers aboard.

Firstly, a rapid yet reliable approach involves countingboth passengers and
cargo. Airlines meticulously weighand record luggage, while the pilot is
well-informed about the plane's"operating empty weight," encompassing the
airframe, all non-usable fluids, and the crew's combined weight.

Secondly, thecrucial aspect of weight and balance distribution receives
unwavering attentionfrom all pilots, regardless of the aircraft's size.
Carefully balancing the weight around the center of gravitywhile loading cargo
is essential. Furthermore, toavoid any imbalance, the cabin crew may request
passengersto change seats, ensuring a suitable weight distribution for a safe
take offand landing.

Lastly, althoughthe plane is not weighed before each take off, its basic empty
weight andcenter of gravity are previously determined. For a more precise
measurement, some airlinesincorporate load sensors in their gear, enabling an
exact measurement of theplane's ramp weight.

In conclusion, the airliner crew's proficiency inevaluating the plane's weight
is commendable. Whetherit's counting passengers and cargo, managing weight and
balance distribution,or utilizing advanced load sensors, they leave no room for
compromiseon safety and efficiency during takeoff.

Driving a car without a gas cap may seem like atrivial matter, but it can have
more consequences than you might expect. Let's dive into what can happen when
your carhits the road without its gas cap securely in place.

First and foremost, the gas cap serves a vitalpurpose - it creates a seal for
the fuel tank. When it's missing, the fuelbecomes exposed to the air, which
leads to increased evaporation. This not only wastes precious fuel but also
contributes to airpollution. Imagine seeing your hard-earned money vanish into
thin air, andknowing you're unintentionally adding to environmental problems
can befrustrating.

Moreover, without the gas cap, your fuel tankbecomes vulnerable to dirt, dust,
and various contaminants that may find their way inside. Over time, this can
negatively impactthe quality of your fuel and cause potential issues such as
clogging of fuelfilters or fuel injectors. It's like inviting unwanted guests
to a party theyweren't invited to - your car's fuel system should be off-limits
to theseintruders.

In modern cars, the onboard diagnostic system keepsa watchful eye on various
vehicle components. Drivingwithout a gas cap can trigger the dreaded check
engine light, indicating apotential problem with the fuel system. It's like a
warning sign flashing onyour dashboard, urging you to pay attention to the
issue at hand.

Not onlydoes driving without a gas cap affect your car's performance, but it
can alsoimpact your wallet. With increased fuel evaporation and potential
damage to thefuel system, your car's fuel efficiency may take a hit. This means
you'll findyourself making more frequent trips to the gas station, spending
more money, and feeling a bit of frustration every time you see that fuel gauge
drop fasterthan usual.

In theworst-case scenario, if dirt and debris manage to find their way into the
fueltank, it can cause damage to the fuel pump and other components of the
fuelsystem. And let's be honest, car repairs are never fun and can put a dent
inyour budget.

On top of all that, driving without a gas cap canaffect your car's ability to
pass emissions tests. Increased fuel evaporationand pollution can lead to
higher emissions, making it challenging foryour car to meet regulatory
standards. It's like facing an obstacle that youweren't prepared for when it
comes to keeping your car road-legal.

We all make mistakes, and sometimes driving withouta gas cap can happen due to
forgetfulness or wear and tear. But don't worry, there are steps you can take
to mitigate theconsequences.

If yourealize your gas cap is missing, don't hesitate - replace it as soon
aspossible with a compatible cap from a reputable auto parts store. This simple
act can save you from further troubles down the road.

If yoususpect you've been driving without a gas cap for an extended period,
considerhaving a mechanic inspect your fuel system. Addressing any potential
damage orcontamination early on can prevent more significant issues in the
future.

If the checkengine light illuminates after driving without a gas cap, don't
ignore it. It'syour car's way of asking for attention, and havingit checked by
a professional can bring peace of mind and ensure your vehicle'shealth.

In short, driving without a gas cap isn't just aminor oversight. It can lead to
fuel wastage, decreased efficiency, andpotential damage to your car's fuel
system. Beingproactive and taking care of your gas cap will help your car
perform optimally, save you money, and reduce your environmental impact - a win
for both you andthe planet! So, let's not underestimate the significance of a
small gas cap andtreat it with the care it deserves.

My note- If thetank is full, there can be chances of spilling of fuel which can
be mostdangerous and chances of fire cannot be eliminated.
