Q1         Doyou think flying is safer today than it used to be?

A1          Rebecca Williams, Experience inAviation Jul 8

Yes, flying ismuch safer today than it used to be. In fact, it is one of the
safestmodes of transportation. According to the National Safety Council, the
odds of dying in a commercial airplane crash are about 1 in 11 million. That's
much lower than the odds of dying in a car crash, which is about 1 in103.

There are a number of reasons why flying is safer today.

First, aircraft are much more advanced than theyused to be. They are equipped
with more sophisticated safety features, such asautopilot and fail-safe
systems.

Another one, pilots are better trained than theyused to be. They receive more
training on how to handle emergencies and how tofly in difficult conditions.
The aviation industry is constantly working toimprove safety.

They invest in research and development to findnew ways to make flying safer.

There are stillrisks associated with flying. But overall, it is a very safe way
to travel. Ifyou are concerned about safety, you can do a few things to reduce
your risk. Choose a reputable airline. Fly during the day. Avoid flying during
peak travel times. And also, be sure to follow the safety instructions of the
flight crew.

Q3         Doairlines compensate doctors for assisting during an emergency? For
example, ifa doctor says that a flight no longer needs to be diverted because
of apassenger’s condition, can the doctor get compensation for preventing that?

A3          LCrouthamel,12h

Unitedairlines certainly doesn't. My parents were on a flightand a woman
collapsed in the aisle. They called over the PA if there were anydoctors
onboard so of course my dad comes forward and assesssed the situation.

My dad hadto give her CPR until the flight landed. The flight and crew
weretotally ill-equiped to handle the situation. They didn't have a medical
kitwith a barrier when he needed to give her mouth to mouth.

When it cametime to land, a flight attendant told my dad he had to return to
hisseat and put on his seat belt. He refused and told her that if he stopped
whathe was doing the woman would die. The landing was rough and they slid but
hecontinued to keep her alive.

When the medicalcrew came on board and took her away, no one said thank you.
United airlinesdid absolutely nothing to thank my dad or give any recognition
at all.The woman lived.

My note-it may  not be out of place if I mention aboutDr,Tiny Nair who had
similar experience after making survive a heart patientpassenger  who developed
chest pain in aUS Journey. Even aletter of acknowledgement was not received by
him from the airlines.
