A1 Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now I am writing thisanswer from Chennai, India. I was working from 1966 to 1990 in Tamilnadu andfrom 1991 to 2004 in Kerala and from 2005 till date again in Chennai, Tamilnaduafter settling here. Last 17 years only I am using AC in home. Till 60 years Ihad no AC in in home, rented homes or departmental quarters. We lived with fanstill new home was constructed in 2006. We opened windowand with available wind and using fans, sometimes sleeping in terrace etc. wespent summer, though discomfort was there, still gotadjusted to it. Even 10%of Indians are not having air conditioner even now in India. It is not a must to have air conditioner even in summer. If air conditioner is there it iscomfortable and many health problems can be avoided. My Note1- I washaving air conditioner through out my career from 1966 to 2004 in telephoneexchanges in which I was working. An air-conditioner was beyond reach of even an officer, and most rented homes had no three phase supply to facilitate air conditionerfixing. My note2 -I have purchased window AC 1.5 tons for 70000-00rupees after duty exemption fortelephone exchange , while my salary was about 1500rupees in 1985’s. Q2 How long do water heaters typicallylast, and how can proper maintenance extend their lifespan? A2 Gopala Krishnan,Former AssistantGeneral Manager 1996-2004 at Department of Telecom (1966–2004)Just now First part of the question-The water heater I purchased in the year 2000 is still working efficiently even today. Twowater heaters purchased in 2006also working perfectly even today after 16 years. We had to replacethe hearing coil 4–5 times in all the water heaters.Due to hard water the coils get corroded quickly. I am told bythe technicians coming for repair that the hot water should be fully used, remaining in heater can corrode coil quickly. During replacing ofcoils they will let fall the water inside, if one observe can see what condition the water is, sinceall water does not drain from water heater. It will be verydirty Q3 Do cruise ships try to avoid rain? A3 Rebecca Williams, knows about boatsand ships2h Yes,Cruise ships try to avoid rain but not always. Cruise ships have advancedtechnology and safety measures that help them avoid or minimizethe impact of rain. For example, cruise ships use radar systems and satellite monitoringto detect and track rain clouds in their vicinity. They also rely oninformation from other sources, such as the International Ice Patrol, whichmonitors the iceberg conditions in the North Atlantic Ocean and issues warningsand advisories to mariners. Cruise ships also have trained navigators and crewmembers who are responsible for steering the ship away from any potentialhazards. They follow strict rules and regulations thatgovern the waterways and ensure safety and order.
