Q2        Whatare some inspiring stories about women?

A2         Dev Kumar, student Aug 6

In the year 1917, a Tamil Indian girl was born in a middle-class familyin
Rangoon, Burma, where her father had gone for a living. Henamed her
Sivaramakrishna Iyer Padmavathi. At a time when women weretraditionally
confined to the kitchen/illiterate, the middle-class girl did MBBS from
RangoonMedical College.

When the Japanese invaded Burma, they briefly returned to their traditional home
in Coimbatore. In 1949, she went to London todo an FRCP, then unimaginable for
a Female Indian doctor.

She was selected to study further at Johns Hopkins University, US,where she
trained under the legendary cardiologist HelenTaussig. Thereafter, she moved to
Harvard University, where she trained underthe Father of Cardiology- Paul
Dudley White.

When a glorious cardiology career awaitedher in the US, she was firm in
returning to India & serving Indians.

She joined Lady Hardinge Medical Collegein 1953, to become India's First Lady
Cardiologist.

S.I.Padmavathi started India's first Cathlab & exclusive CardiacClinic.Started
India's first DM Cardiology course. She founded the All India Heart Foundation
(AIHF) in 1962,to serve the poor & needy. She joined Maulana Azad Medical
College in 1967,by which time her fame had spread. The Indian Govt under Indira
Gandhi honoured her with the Padma Bhushan, that year.

She was the cardiologist &administrator of 3 great colleges at the same time-
MAMC, G.B.Pant Hospital& Lok Nayak Hospital. Sheretired as Director, of MAMC in
1978.

She set up the National Heart Institute (NIH) in 1981, in Delhi. At age90,
Padmavathi became a fellow of The European Society of Cardiology in 2007.

Till age 95, (the year 2015),Padmavathi worked 12 hours a day, five days a
week, to serve poor and needyIndians, with state-of-the-art Cardiac Care. She
retired from active practice, that year. The Government ofIndia bestowed India's
second highest Civilian Award, the Padma Vibushan onS.I.Padmavathi in 1992.

Both Padmavathi and her sisterJanaki(neurologist) remained single and started
the Janaki-Padmavathi trust, pouring in their entire earnings to start a trust
to provide poor people withmoney for life-saving Heart Surgeries.

After dedicating her entire life to servingthe poor in the field of Cardiology,
S.I.Padmavathi passed away in 2020, at age103 from Corona.

Imagine the steely resolve, vision, brilliance and sheer determination of this
iron- lady to shatter theglass ceiling in achieving all these, serving poor
Indians with quality cardiaccare, and finally giving away all her wealth to her
fellow citizens.

Here is an inspiring story of thefirst female cardiologist of India, who
achieved so much by returning to hercountry. Tamilnadu & India should be mighty
proud of their daughter-Sivaramakrishna Iyer Padmavathi!

My note- Most probably age would have been the mainreason added with corona for
death. It is mybthinking.

Q3        Duringsummer, iron pipes get hotter and due to that water is hot too
in the taps. Ifwe paint iron pipes from outside, will the water be still hotter
or come backto normal?

A3         Gopala Krishnan, Retired AGM BSNL just now

I am answering from Chennai,India. It is a place having hot climate and very
hot in summer.

Earlier water pipes were GI pipes, now mostly PVC ISI pipes are used. However in
vulnerable areas GI pipes is used.

It is a fact first hot water will come through pipes for two minutes orso, as
very hot, and normal water will come.

Upper layers of water are veryhot and water supply pipesare connected at
bottom, what the hot water one get is the water in the pipes.Painting of pipes
protect the GI/PVC pipes. It has notmuch effect in cooling the water,

Q4        Docruise ships still hit icebergs?

A4         Rebecca Williams,knows about boats and ships8h

It is extremely rare for cruise ships tohit icebergs today. There have been a
few incidents in recent years, but they have been minor and have not resulted in
any major damage or injuries.

Cruise ships have advanced technology and safety measures that help themavoid
or minimize the impact of icebergs. For example, cruise ships use radar systems
and satellite monitoring to detect and trackicebergs in their vicinity. They
also rely on information from othersources, such as the InternationalIce
Patrol, which monitors the iceberg conditions in the North Atlantic Oceanand
issues warnings and advisories to mariners.

Cruise ships also have trained navigators and crew members who areresponsible
for steering the ship away from any potential hazards. Theyfollow strict rules
and regulations that govern the waterways and ensure safetyand order. For
instance, cruise ships have to maintain a safe distance fromicebergs, depending
on their size and visibility. They also have to reduce their speed or change
theircourse when sailing in icy waters.

Cruise ships also have emergencyprocedures and equipment that can help them
deal with any unexpectedsituations. For example, cruise ships have watertight
compartmentsthat can isolate any damage or flooding caused by an iceberg. They
also have lifeboatsand rafts that can accommodate every passenger and crew
member on board, aswell as additional capacity in reserve. Cruise ships also
conduct regulardrills and exercises to prepare their passengers and crew
members for anypossible scenarios.

Q6        Ifiodine is carcinogenic and poisonous, why is it added to table salt?

A6         RI Shohag,11h

There is a difference between iodine andiodine salts.

For example, chlorine is an irritating and poisonous gas, but sodium chloride
orcommon salt is quite harmless (unless consumed in excess).

Iodine salts are necessary micro-nutrients for the humanbody and are neither
carcinogenic nor poisonous at levels consumed.

On the contrary, the lack of iodine salts in the diet can cause thyroidproblems
such as Hypothyroidism . Severe iodine deficiency in themother has been
associated with miscarriages, stillbirths, premature birth, andbirth defects in
babies. Children of mothers with severe iodinedeficiency during pregnancy may
suffer from mental retardation and problemswith growth, hearing and speech.[ 1 ]

The woman in the photo suffersfrom goiter, which is an inflammation of the
thyroid due to a lack of iodinesalts in the diet:Iodine salts are found
naturally in ourdiet, but in some parts of the world there is iodine
deficiency, causing healthproblems.

Adding small amounts of iodinesalts to common salt is a cheap and efficient way
to avoid these problems.

Q7        Whatare some real life examples of the Butterfly Effect?

A7         Dev Kumar, student Aug 10

The US standard railroad gauge (distance between therails) is 4 feet, 8.5
inches. That's an exceedingly odd number. Why was that gauge used? Well,
because that's the way they built them inEngland, and English engineers
designed the first US railroads.

Why did the English build them like that? Becausethe first rail lines were
built by the same people who built the wagontramways, and that's the gauge they
used.

So, why did 'they' use that gauge then?

Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and toolsthat they
had used for building wagons, which used that same wheel spacing.

Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing?

Well, if they tried to use any otherspacing, the wagon wheels would break more
often on some of the old, longdistance roads in England .

You see, that's the spacing of the wheel ruts. So who built those oldrutted
roads?

Imperial Rome built the first long distance roads in Europe (includingEngland )
for their legions. Those roads have been used eversince.

And what about the ruts in the roads?

Roman war chariots formed the initialruts, which everyone else had to match or
run the risk of destroying theirwagon wheels.

Since the chariots were made forImperial Rome , they were all alike in the
matter of wheel spacing.

Therefore the United States standardrailroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches is
derived from the originalspecifications for an Imperial Roman war chariot.

Bureaucracies live forever. Sothe next time you are handed a
specification/procedure/process and wonder 'Whathorse's ass came up with
this?', you may be exactly right. Imperial Roman army chariotswere made just
wide enough to accommodate the rear ends of two war horses. (Twohorses' asses.)

Now, the twist to the story: When you see a Space Shuttle sitting on itslaunch
pad, there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the mainfuel
tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokolat
their factory in Utah . The engineers who designed the SRBs would havepreferred
to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by trainfrom the
factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory happens to run
through a tunnel inthe mountains, and the SRBs had to fit through that tunnel.
The tunnelis slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track, as
you nowknow, is about as wide as two horses' behinds. So, a majorSpace Shuttle
design feature, of what is arguably the world's most advancedtransportation
system, was determined over two thousand years ago by the widthof a horse's ass.
