CULTURAL QA 08-2023-22 Q1 What issomething that most people don't know?
A1 Venzil Lawrence.BE in Computer Science Engineering, St.Joseph Engineering College, Mangalore (Expected 2027)Updated Sat MRI machine used in hospitals for medical imaging issomething many of you have heard of, but not everyone knows how it actuallyworks Imagine you're trying to take a peek inside your body without cutting itopen… That's where MRI, short for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, comesin. It's like a super cool camera that doesn't use any radiationlike X-rays do. Before discussing the processlet’s understand MRI machine.So.. There are four main components of MRI machine.. 1 Magnet 2 Gradient Coil 3 Radio frequency coil 4 Computer System Now let’s understand it’s workingand process… to understand this let’s start from the basics… So.. our bodies are mostly water (almost 60%)… and water has tinyparticles called protons at the centre of each molecule… These protons love hanging out in the middle of atoms, like a nucleus…. Now, when you place your body in a strongmagnetic field, these protons align with it, just like compass needles pointingnorth. Ok.. Now a quick burst of energy issent into your body, which temporarily shakes up the hydrogenatomsinside the molecule….. When the radiofrequency pulse ends, thehydrogen atoms go back to their normal setup…. As they do this, they release signals. These signals hold info about what'snearby… It's like they're sharing secrets, and those secrets help create imagesof your body's insides. Once the hydrogen atoms send outtheir signals, special coil called “Gradient coil” in the MRI machine act like powerful ear, catching those signals.. These coils help make the signalssuper clear and help create detailed images of what's going on inside you…. It's like having a bunch of microphones that can hear every littlesound the atoms are making. Now, the detected signals are sent to acomputer, which processes and reconstructs them into detailed images… And that's the whole process ofhow MRI works... i hope my answer was informative My note- Very informative. Told scientificinformation in the most simplest manner. Q2 What iskursi Nashin? A3 G Viswanath In the old days before independence, Indians were not allowed to siton a chair while waiting in a British official's office. If heor she had this "Kursi Nashin" certificate. Then he or she waspermitted to sit on a chair. “Kursi Nashin” literally means "chair sitter" in Hindi. The kursi nashin certificate wasintroduced in the early 19th century as a way to differentiate between Indianswho were considered to be of high social status and those who were not. Only those with the certificate were allowed to sit on a chair in thepresence of a British official. This was a way for the British to asserttheir dominance over the Indians and to reinforce the social hierarchy. It was a reminder to Indians that they were not considered to be theequals of the British. The certificate was eventually abolishedafter India gained independence in 1947. Here is how a typical KursiNashin certificate dated July 1, 1887 awarded to Ram Narain, son of SheoParshad looked like. ( notattached here) May this make us realize howhumiliating it was for us those days. My father-in-law who is now no more had more such storiesto tell us. He workedunder a British Officer during the Pre-Independence years. Q3 Would Earthbe visible from Mars with the naked eye? A3 Olivier Van de Velde, Studied at Vrije UniversiteitBrussel17h As Mars is visible from Earth with the naked eye and Earth is biggerthan Mars and theatmosphere on Mars is less dense than that of Earth, the answer is yes, Earthis visible from Mars with the naked eye. Just to be absolutely sure let’shave a look at some pictures of Earth taken from Mars by Curiosity. This is a picture taken byCuriosity of Earth, Jupiter and Venus from Mars: On this is a picture taken byCuriosity we can see Earth and Moon at 10X magnification(Pictures not added) Q4 Who are someunsung heroes of India? A4 Hanshad Hameed,FormerStation Master at Indian Railways (2018–2020)Updated 5y Read about this man- Ghulam Dastagir He was the Deputy StationSuperintendent of Bhopal Junctionon December 3rd 1984.Yes, the day Bhopal Gastragedy happened. Unfortunately for him and fortunately for so many, he stayed there tocomplete some pending work. At midnight when he stepped on to the platform, he felt an itch in histhroat and burning sensation in his eyes. He rushed to his StationSuperintendent's office, but hewas dead already. The Gorakhpur - Mumbai express train with more than1000 passengers on board was waiting on the platform, for which the departure time was 20 minutes away. Trusting his instincts, he knewsomething was clearly wrong. He summoned his staff and told them to clear the train for departure.Even though the staff wasn't ready to do that without any authority, he said hewould take full responsibility for the early departure. Breaking allthe rules, he flagged off the train. At this time he was noteven able to walk or breathe properly. But he ignored it. He then rushed to control room and suspended all the trains coming toBhopal Junction. Healso sent an SOS to nearby stations seeking medical help, which lead to the arrival of paramedicsand Ambulance to the station. He ran from platform to platform consoling the affected passengers andensuring medical help. He stayed in the station, doing his duty, knowing that his family isout there in the same city. His devotion to duty saved thousands of lives that day but he lost one of his son and another developed a lifelong skin infection. His life was saved on that day, but he was never able to lead a normallife from then. Hedied in 2003 after 19 years fighting the painful growth in his throat due tothe exposure to Methyl Isocyanate. The railways installed a memorial forthose who sacrificed their life on that day. But Gulam Dastagir is not even inthe list. He and his family would've beensaved, if he had not chosen to save many others instead of saving himself. Buthis choice was different. “A Hero is some one who has given his orher life to something bigger than oneself”- Joseph Campbell And in all means he's a HERO. My note- A touching narration. I knew about Bhopal gastragedy and delays in settling and paying compensation etc in papers, but notmuch in detail like this. Q5 What is thefunniest joke you've been told that you still think about to this day? A5 David S,22h Jesus was walking around Heaven one day. In a small, secluded garden He saw an old man, crying. Alarmed, Jesus ran up to him and said, “Hey, now, what’s allthis? This is paradise. Thereshould be no tears or sorrow.” The old man wiped away his tearsand said, “Oh, I know. I’m sorry. But… well, many years ago, a son came to me through… well, let’s say‘mysterious circumstances’. After many trials he went through a miraculous transformation, and a bookwas written about him that became known the world over. I thought I would find him here, but I haven’t. I’m afraid I’ll neversee him again.” Wide-eyed, Jesus looked at theman and said, “Wait aminute… You weren’t, by any chance… a carpenter, were you?” The man looked up in surprise. “Why, yes. Yes, I was!” Jesus burst into tears of joy andheld out His arms saying,“Father!” The man cocked his headdoubtfully and said, “Pinocchio???” All the above QA are from Quora digest to me on 22-08- 2023.
