CULTURAL QA 08-2023-22A Q1 Asa non-Muslim, have you met a five-time praying Muslim? How do they behave? Howdid they treat you?
A1 Sangeetha Sriraam, Personal experiences Updated 5y My LLM roommate was a devote Muslim. She prayed five-times a day, kept fast during Ramadaan, and went to Hajj twice. She was also a hard corenon-vegetarian. I, on the other hand, am a devote Hindu and aconscientious vegetarian. Our room was called the “Room of Blessings”cuz the two of us prayed more than the rest of the hostel put-together. She was out-going, I take time to warm up and pretty nerdy. She initially marked me off as cold and competitive. We were off to a roughstart. The rest of the batch bad mouthing her to me and about me to her didn’thelp. But with time things got better, we went on to becomegood roomies and eventually good friends. We were mature and cared for each other. Most importantly,we agreed on fan speed !! Her prayer routine was just a part of our daily life. Her Fajr(first prayer of the day, before sunrise) alarm would wake me before it wakesher. I would, in my sleepy state call out, “Zeeee Fajr… wake uppp”, make sureshe is up, flip and sleep. She would often lose track of time and almost missher Isha (night prayers). I would remind her. She used to watch Mahabharata for the story value. I would ask her to narrate storiesfrom the life of the Prophet, learnt the meaning of a few concepts like“Sidra” and jinns etc. We would also go on walks, gossip, yap, watch moviestogether etc. Just like any other pair. We were startlingly different charactersbut got along just fine. Our religions and prayer methods had very little to dowith it. Q2 Whyare modular kitchen designs important? A3 Rebecca Williams, knows about boats and shipsJul 15 Two boats moving in parallel paths close to one another risk collidingbecause of a phenomenon called Bernoulli’s principle. This principle states that thepressure of a fluid (such as water or air) decreases as its speed increases. When two boats are moving in thesame direction and close to each other, the water between them flows faster than the water aroundthem, creating a low-pressure zone. This low-pressure zone acts as asuction force that pulls the boats towards each other, increasing the risk ofcollision. This difference in pressurecreates a force that pushes the boats toward each other. This force is calledthe Bernoulli force. The Bernoulli force is what causes two boats moving close together to riskcolliding. There are a few things that boaters can do to avoid colliding whenmoving close together. First, they can increase the distance between their boats. Thiswill reduce the difference in pressure between the boats, which will reduce theBernoulli force. Second, they can slow down their boats. This will also reduce thedifference in pressure between the boats, and it will also give them more timeto react if they start to drift toward each other. My note- Whether during boat racesespecially in Kerala whether Bermulli principle is strictly followed? I stand corrected. Q4 Willgranite chip or crack? A4 Anum Khalid, Works at Seven Koncepts4y Yes, Granite can chip or crack. But, Granite is a very durablenatural stone however itcan get damaged if it gets hit buy a very hard object or something that isheavier than granite. It chips but usually they are not visible, butthey can be felt. But itsextremely unlikely to crack if it is used normally. Normally its getcracks on the edges or partitions if it is placed somewhere with more trafficand higher usage. Graniteis heat resistant and normally heat does not damage it unless rarecircumstances. My note- I have observed very slight breaks in the edges of few graniteslabs laid 17 years back in my home . Whether manufacturing defect noted recently or quality of granite or any otherreason is not known. Laid by contractor. Q5 Whywas sand filled in the assembly hall of the Konark Sun Temple, and why is itbeing removed now after 119 years? A5 Sushil Kumar,Former Assistant Manager at IOCL PETROL(2007–2019)10h The sand was filled in the assembly hallof the Konark Sun Temple by the British in the early 1900s to preventthe structure from collapsing. The temple was built in the 13thcentury and is made of sandstone, which is a soft stone that is susceptible toweathering. Over time, the temple had begun to show signs ofdecay, and the British feared that it would soon collapse. They filled the assembly hall with sand in the hope thatthe weight of the sand would help to stabilize the structure. However, the sand has actually causedmore harm than good. The weight of the sand has put a strain on the walls ofthe assembly hall, and it has also caused the sand to settle and compact, whichhas created cracks in the walls. The sand is also preventing water fromdraining away from the temple, which is contributing to the decay of the stone. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)has now begun the process of removing the sand from the assembly hall. Theprocess is expected to take three years. The ASI is using a variety of methods toremove the sand, including drilling holes in the floor of the assembly hall andusing pumps to remove the sand. The removal of the sand is a delicate operation, as the ASI is carefulnot to damage the structure of the temple. The ASI isalso taking steps to preserve the sand, as it is a valuable historicalartifact. The sand will be stored in a secure location and will be usedfor research purposes. The removal of the sand is a major undertaking, but it is essential tothe preservation of the Konark Sun Temple. The temple is a UNESCO WorldHeritage Site and is one of the most important architectural and culturalmonuments in India. The ASI is committed to preserving the temple for futuregenerations. Q6 Couldlife on Earth have come from Venus? Venus used to be in the habitable zone andprobably had oceans, so is it possible space debris transported it here? A6 Silk Road,AI Expert14h The idea that life on Earth could havehitched a ride from another planet is called panspermia, andit is not as crazy as it may seem. There is evidence that somemicrobes can survive the harsh conditions of space, and that meteorites cancarry organic molecules from one world to another. So, could Venus have been the cradle of lifefor our planet? Venus is often called Earth's twin, because they are similar in size, mass and composition. But today, they are very differentworlds. Venus has a hellish environment, with asurface temperature of 462 °C (863 °F) and an atmospheric pressure 92 timesthat of Earth. It has no water on its surface, and itsclouds are made of sulfuric acid. It is hard to imagine how any life couldsurvive there. Venus was not always like this. According to computer models by NASA scientists, Venus may have had ashallow ocean and a habitable climate for up to 2 billion years of its earlyhistory. This was when the Sun was dimmer and Venus was farther away from it, inthe so-called habitable zone where liquid water can exist. Venus may have had a thick atmospherethat shielded it from the Sun's radiation and kept it warm enough for life toemerge. What happened to Venus? The most likely scenario is thatVenus experienced a runawaygreenhouse effect, triggered by a rise in carbon dioxide levels in itsatmosphere. As the planet warmed up, more waterevaporated from theocean, creating more clouds that trapped more heat, creating a vicious cyclethat eventually boiled away the ocean and left Venus dry and hot. The water vapor in the upperatmosphere was broken down by the Sun's ultraviolet rays, and the hydrogenescaped to space, leaving behind a thick layer of carbon dioxide. If life ever existed on Venus, it would havefaced a tough challenge to survive this drastic change. It is possible that some microbes couldhave adapted to the extreme conditions, or retreated to some hidden nicheswhere water still exists, such as underground or in the clouds. But there is no direct evidence for this, and it would be very difficult to detect with our current technology. There are some meteorites on Earth that areknown to come from Mars, so it is conceivable that some could also come fromVenus. However, there are several problems with thishypothesis. First of all, we don't know if therewas ever any life on Venus to begin with. We have no fossilsor biosignatures to prove it. Second, we don't know if any life onVenus could survive the journey to Earth. The trip would take millions of years, and expose the microbes toradiation, vacuum and extreme temperatures. Third, we don't know if any life onVenus could adapt to Earth's environment. The microbes would have to dealwith a different atmosphere, gravity and chemistry than their original home. Finally, we don't know if any life onVenus could compete with life on Earth. Even if some microbes managed toland on our planet, they would have to face the existing life forms that hadalready evolved here. They would have to find a nichewhere they could thrive without being outcompeted or eaten by other organisms. Verdict: The answer to the question is: we don'tknow. It is possible that life on Earthcame from Venus, but it is very unlikely. There are too many uncertainties andobstacles for this scenario to be plausible. The most probable explanation is that life onEarth originated here independently, through natural processes that we arestill trying to understand. Q7 Whydo most of the symptoms like stroke, heart attack, and sugar spikes occur lateat night? A7 Healthy Men, Men’s Health specialist Sun The occurrence of symptoms like stroke, heart attack, and sugar spikes during late-night hours can be attributed to acombination of factors relatedto our body’s natural rhythms, physiological processes, and lifestyle choices. Circadian Rhythms: The body’s internal clock, knownas the circadian rhythm, influences various bodily functions. During the late hours, blood pressure tends to drop, potentiallyleading to reduced blood flow to vital organs like the brain and heart. This can increase the risk of blood clots forming, potentially causingstrokes or heart attacks. Additionally, the body’s hormoneregulation, including insulin sensitivity, fluctuates over the course of a day.Reduced insulin sensitivity during late hours can contribute to elevatedblood sugar levels. Hormonal and Physiological Changes: In the early morning hours, there is often a natural surge in stresshormones such as cortisol. Thisincrease in stress hormones, combined with the body’s higher heart rate andblood pressure, can trigger heart attacks or exacerbate existing heartconditions. Conversely, during the night, the body’s overall activity slows down, which can lead to reduced blood flow and oxygen delivery to organs, increasingthe risk of strokes or heart-related events. Lifestyle Factors: Late-night eating and unhealthy food choices can lead to elevated bloodsugar levels, especially when the body’s metabolism is slower during the night.Consuming high-carbohydrate or sugary foods before bedtime can contribute tosugar spikes. Additionally, factors such as sleep disorders (e.g., sleep apnea) that are more prevalentduring nighttime can disrupt oxygen supply and increase the risk of strokes orheart issues. Sleep Disruption and Stress: Irregular sleep patterns and sleep disruptions can lead to increasedstress on the body. Chronic stress can contribute to the development of heartconditions and disrupt hormonal balance, potentially worsening the risk ofheart attacks. Stress also affects blood sugar regulation, potentially leading tosugar spikes during late hours. In summary, the interplay of circadian rhythms, hormonal changes, physiological processes, and lifestyle choices cancontribute to the increased occurrence of symptoms like stroke, heart attack, and sugar spikes during late-night hours. It’s important toprioritize healthy lifestyle habits, maintain regular sleep patterns, andmanage stress to mitigate the risk of these events regardless of the time ofday.
