CASHEW NUT-KAJU-PARANGI/KASU ANDI –PART 2

Respected friends,

I am continuing my posting aboutcashews.

Gopalakrishnan 26-8-23.

7. Bakeries and cashew nuts.

On those days when supermarketswere not available, we used to get cashews from
bakeries. They had differenttypes of cashews like salted, slight chilly added
and just roasted. When cashewbecame a light snack item, it was salted and
slight chilly added and it wasserved maximum 4-5 pieces per participant.

8. Provision stores and cashew nuts.

In provision stores cashew iskept in transparent air tight plastic jars. They
weight and issue just roastedfor removing shell cashew nuts.

9. Split cashew nuts.

The provision stores sell splitcashew nuts while removing skin. Split cashew
nuts are sold at a lower rate. Some caterers prefer split cashews to add in
sweets.

10. Canteen and cashews.

While working in Kerala Telecomoffice at Trivandrum,   during meetingdays the
canteen supplied best quality cashews for distribution toparticipants,
purchased from best bakery. The canteen used to purchase morequantity and many
of us used to book 50-100 grams for families. In addition tomini snack, meals
also were served by the canteen with ata prathaman.

On the meeting days on thisaccounted I never used to carry lunch box. My wife
used to remind to purchasespecial cashew on those days. Unless exhausted I
could meet her desire.

11. Exported cashews.

While my son comes on vacationfrom Jeddah, he used to bring large quantities of
cashew purchased from there.Mostly these cashews are very large than from
India, probably grown inAfrica/Egypt.  They are just roastedcashews.

Incidentally the Quilon factoriesalso get imported cashews from Africa by
shipment, when local market could notprocure cashews. I have read in
newspapers/watched in TV news.

After my son’s bringing, cashewnuts added in dishes has doubled

12 Cashew plantations

Now in Kerala and Tamilnadu thereare cashew plantations producing large
quantities of cashew.  In Kerala the plantations are more in NorthKerala,
mainly in Kannur.

13. Adyar aanadabhavan cashew nut.

An interesting incident. Recentlyin Adyar Aanadabhavan branch at Velachery
while purchasing sweet items, my wifefound pepper applied cashews in small
bottle. Thinking it could be tastier thanones purchased from supermarket; one
bottle of 250 grams was purchased.

But coming home and tasted, it was simply fried with cashew powder and salt,
least tasty. With much difficulty it was exhausted.

14. Spray pepper cashew nuts.

Now in supermarkets in Chennai,we get regular cashews in different quantity
packs, special packs fromcompanies at Panrutti and Chennai, salted, salted and
chilli sprayed and pepperspayed. Cashew is just sprayed, probably in a chamber
in the factory, hencethey are sweet inside.

15. Eating cashews.

Whatever the type of cashews, there is an upper limit in eating. Practically
after eating 4-5 we feel fullness.

While adding cashews, as I readin a posting by a girl -“my mother does not
count cashews added” nowadays in homes morequantity is added comparing to
earlier, most probably due to affordability and availability.

Even uppuma becomes tastier becauseof the adding of more spices than earlier in
good restaurants.

When compliments are given like laddus, uncontrollably our eyes look for
quantity of cashew bits, cloves etc. added todecide the grade.

After eating Tirupathi laddu, it is not one’s fault to look forsuch things in
Laddu. While preparing even wheat halwa, more cashews are addednow.
