Q2         Howis a ship’s hull protected from corrosion?

A2         Rebecca Williams, knows about boats and ships45m

A ship’s hull is the part of the ship thatis in contact with the water and is
exposed to various corrosive agents, such assalt, oxygen, and microorganisms.
Corrosion can damage the hull andreduce its strength, durability, and
performance. A ship’s hull needs tobe protected from corrosion by using various
methods and techniques.

One of the most common methods of protecting a ship’s hull from corrosionis to
apply coatings or paints that form a barrier between the hull andthe water.
Coatings or paintscan prevent or reduce the chemical and electrochemical
reactions that causecorrosion. They can also improve the appearance and
hydrodynamicproperties of the hull.

Coatings or paints can wear off overtime due to abrasion, erosion, or fouling,
and need to be reappliedperiodically.

Another method of protecting a ship’s hull from corrosion is to usecathodic
protection, which is a technique that uses an external source ofelectric
current or sacrificial anodes to make the hull more negative inpotential than
the surrounding water. This way, the hull becomes the cathodeand does not
corrode, while the anode corrodes instead. Cathodic protection can be achieved
by using impressedcurrent cathodic protection (ICCP), which uses a power supply
and electrodes todeliver a controlled current to the hull, or by using
sacrificialanodes, which are made of more active metals than the hull, such as
zinc ormagnesium.

A third method of protecting a ship’s hull from corrosion is to usecorrosion
inhibitors, which are substances that slow down or stop thecorrosion process by
interfering with the chemical or electrochemicalreactions. Corrosion inhibitors
can be added to the water or applied to thehull surface. They can act by
forming a protective film on the metal surface,by reducing the oxygen
concentration in the water, by increasing the pH of thewater, or by complexing
with metal ions.
