Q1        Whydo pilots say, "Roger"? What does Roger mean in aviation?

A1         Peter Wilma, Save up to 90% on flightswith Mighty Travels.9mo

There are afew differenttheories as to why pilots say roger when
they'recommunicating with air traffic control.

One theory is that it's a holdover from when Morsecode was used for
communication between pilots and air traffic control. In Morse code, the letter
R isrepresented by three dots, so roger would be spelled out as RRR.

Another theory is that it's simply a way of sayingreceived, as in, I've
received your message loud and clear.

Whatever the origins of the term may be, nowadaysmost pilots just use it as
shorthand for acknowledgingthat they've heard and understood what air traffic
control has told them.

Q2         How does it feel to be a Sikh in India?

A2         Jasbeer Singh, Updated 5y

The situation of Sikhs in India is completely opposite tothe opinion that
people try to make in West, so that they can prove they aremuch better placed
than them in their respective countries.I will try to answer and in that
process debunk some myths which Western Sikhstry to propagate about us Sikhs
living in India

-We are not discriminated on racial lines like inWest, seldom it happens that
someone tells us to go back to our ‘Punjab’ thattoo on a friendly note as most
people in India idealize Punjab and it’slifestyle this is unlike in West where
in some unfortunate incidents Sikhs werephysically assaulted and were asked to
in an insulting way to either “leave ourcountry” or “get back to where you came
from”

-We are not suppressed in India, a myth that keepsdoing round in West. Sikhs
are free to practice their religion as and how theylike. We don’t need any
special permissions for simple group gatherings likeNagar Kirtan, Prabhat Feri
(just normal permissions which even Hindus wouldrequire and in some case not
even that) neither are we forced to do any Hinduritual before performing any of
our own. Apart from this I don’t understandwhat suppression means in religious
context

-We get all the respect from people as Sikhs areseen as integral part of India,
majority of the Indians are not even aware thatthere is some kind of movement
happening in which Sikhs are demanding their owncountry. They get shock of
their life when they come to know it

-We are not joked upon every time. This is theexperience of me and even my Sikh
fellows who grew up with me in sameneighbourhoods in which most of them were
Hindus. None of us has ever heard ajoke after passing our school or may be
college. And even in schools wheneverjokes were made it use to come with a cute
disclaimer “don’t mind dear you areour brother” and when I use to get serious
my friends use to do all tantrumsjust to make my mood elevated and this is the
story of most of the sikhs. Aftergrowing up this all seem like a good
sweet-sour memories

-We are always welcomed and looked withrespect. I remember going on my first
assignment in Indian Villages in poorlydeveloped areas. I was received warmly
by all households even with their womenin veils (typical of Indian village)
having no connection of any sort withSikhs. In south India I felt that I got
extra privilege of being a turbanedSikh this is contrary to all the
advertisements done by West Sikhs

-We do not crib and cling to the past like Western Sikhswould want us to do.
Sikhs in India are progressive andhave moved on from that terrible phase of ’84
we are not sobs and believe inthe essential principle of Good for all human
beings in it’s true spirit, treatment of Police towards us is just like towards
every other Indian, unfortunately there is a lot of corruption that’s a hard
fact but nounnecessary batons are applied on us by Indian cops because of our
religionlike advertised in West.

Q4         What is the best thing someone has donefor you? It can be something
they said or did.

A4         Sahil Phatangare,I am happy1y

A day beforeyesterday, After mom and dad went for the job.As usual i missed
breakfast, alsofeeling lazy to cook it either.

So, I went to myfavourite south Indian food shop to buy myself brunch.I am kind
of theirregular customer.

So what happened, itook a 100 rupees note with me. one note of 20 rupees, and
two singles of 10rupees.

I bought groceriesworth 120 rupees. In my mind, I was having 20 rupees left in
my pocket.

Usually, I orderseparate idli and vada plates worth 40 rupees.

But due to scarcity of cash, I order a single mix of 20.

After eating, whenI dig my right hand in my right pocket I found nothing.

The left pocket wasalso empty, to an extent I even checked my phone's Back
cover.

I got scared, gathering courage to inform him.

Me: Anna.

Stall owner: needextra sambhar? Wait let me serve you.

Me: no thanks, I amdone.

Actually, Icarried 20 rupees in my pocket. But now they are missing. Can I
repay youtomorrow?

Stall owner: aww, why are you taking so much stress.Consider it as a treat from
my side.

I got a bit ofrelief, inhale some air.

2 days later, whenI revisited him. As usual, I eat my regular combo.

Me: Anna, takethese 60 rupees.

Stall owner: why 60, it costs 40.

Me: 20 from last time, that day I was cashless na.

Stall owner: haw,you moron. You are my friend it was a party on me.

I triedconvincing, but he didn't listen. Also, he is around my father's age so
Icouldn't push much.

Every time, when Igo to his shop. Without missing he always refills sambhar and
chutney on myplate.

It tastessatisfying when you buy it, but it tastes good when you get it for
free.

My note- Though the answer aims at themagnanimous behaviour of the shop owner,
in my view, the girl washungry, so should have given importance of food, then
purchase other things.Especially ladies must take more money while going out.

Q6         What are some of the unsolved mysteriesof India?

A6         Parimal Paritosh, Programming Officerat Oil and Natural Gas
Corporation Ltd. (ONGC) (2020–present)Updated 4y

Baba HarbhajanSingh, a soldier deployed in the Nathula pass in Eastern Sikkim
has beenguarding the India China border for the past 50 years. He is just like
any other soldier. He takes two months a year off to visit hisparents in
Kapurthala district in Punjab, stays up at night for our safety, haspromotions
that he is entitled to (currently an honorary captain) and sends hissalary home.

But there is onebig difference, he is dead.

He died 48 yearsago. He slipped accidentally and was drowned in a glacier while
carryingsupplies to a remote outpost. His body got carried 2 kms away from the
site.Interesting thing was that, he himself helped his unit to discover his
body forcremation.

Then paid a visit to one of his friends in his dreams andasked for a shrine to
be built in his name. The unitobliged and Harbhajan Singh becameBaba Harbhajan
Singh after that.

The spirit ofBaba Harbhajan Singh warns his unit of any impending dangers at
least three daysin advance. He does the duty of keeping the soldiers on the
night duty awake. His colleagues polish his shoes, wash his clothes and carry
his portrait to hisoffice and back. They also randomly find his shoes muddy and
his bed sheetdisturbed.

The legend hasbecome so popular that a special reservation for the Baba is
actually made andhis berth left empty for the entire journey to his home town
every year withother soldiers accompanying him so as to reach him till his
home.

A small sum ofmoney is also contributed by soldiers posted in Nathula to be
sent to hismother each month. Even the Chinese respect him, theyleave a seat
vacant for him at flag meetings.

Truly said - A soldier is never off duty.

Edit: ColonelRajinder Singh's comment on this answer:

For about an yearplus in the seventies, I had the good fortune of commanding
the Army Post atNathula Pass, Sikkim. “La” literally translated means a Pass.
The Post included the Shrine ofBaba Harbhajan Singh on the road side with a
sheer 300 - 400 feet drop on oneside.

During this tenure, we were responsible for upkeep of the Shrinethrough harsh
snowfall in winters and short pleasant summers with pink, whiteand red
Rhododendron flowers in full bloom. The Shrine has his complete military
uniform and even apair of slippers for Baba Harbhajan Singh.

He is considered the Guardian of all vehiclesand and living beings traversing
through this Pass and the surrounding areas. It is a miracle that, to the best
of my knowledge, there wasn’t a singleaccident or fatality on this Pass even
with snow piling up a couple of feet onthe road requiring special driving
precautions.

There weretalked of instances, specially during zero visibility / night with
dangeroussnowy conditions, where Baba Harbhajan Singh himself appeared and
guidedvehicles for a safe passage.
