This is what I have in my book: A family went to have the darshan of Maha Periyavaal. Along with them, they took one of their family friends who lived in the USA for some decades. The friend did not have any great faith in our religion, system and especially the monks wearing the saffron; he went along with him with utterly non-interested to meet Him. He was under the impression that Maha Periyavaal was a fundamentalist, an uneducated monk. This NRI had no great respect at all for Him. Not only that, he uttered such inauspicious things about Him, ‘what does He know? Does He know English?’.
There was a big throng of devotees at the Mutt and the family was standing in a decent distance from Him. As usual, Maha Periyavaal saw this family with His graceful eyes, and called all of them near to Him. They all went near Him, the friend too. After all the usual courteous enquiry towards the family, the Master looked at the NRI friend and asked about his details, including his name, whereabouts, his predecessors, where he is working etc etc. Then He asked, ‘you are born in India, and you know Tamil; your wife was also born in India and should know the mother tongue. When you two converse will it be in Tamil or English?’ The friend replied ‘We never use Tamil at home, we use only English. The same goes for the kids also.’ Then Maha Periyavaal asked, ‘before speaking, you may have to think and conceive the sentence. Is the thought process in Tamil or English?’ The friend replied, ‘That too in English only’. Some minutes later, an old lady came to have Maha Periyavaal Darshan. Maha Periyavaal looked at the NRI person and said, ‘This old lady is now very poor, but once upon a time she was very rich. But even after she lost all the materialistic wealth her devotion towards the Mutt, Acharya and me has never changed even a bit. Could you please tell me what is the English word which will describe this unflinching devotion, which can’t be changed by external situations? I would like to know.’ The man was flummoxed. He thought and thought for a while but did not know that word. Maha Periyaval smiled and told him, ‘please take your time and let me know’. Even after some time, he could not come up with the required word. Then Swamiji said, ‘Can I suggest one word? Could you please confirm whether the same can convey this meaning? EQUIPOISED’. The man was spellbound and fell on Maha Periyavaal’s Feet to Pardon him for his ego.. KR IRS 2 9 23 NB: Buddha said,"The truth of nirodha, "cessation," "suppression," "renouncing," "letting go", or dukkha-nirodha, the cessation of dukkha, is the truth that dukkha ceases, or can be confined, when one renounces or confines craving and clinging, and nirvana is attained. Systematically, diligently, and repeatedly, one moves the attention through the body, gradually strengthening awareness of sensations, increasing one’s ability not to react to them. With this training – the awareness of the present moment and equanimity – the pattern of though begins to change, from thoughts of craving, aversion, and ignorance to thoughts of Dhamma, or the way out of suffering. But thinking, even of Dhamma, will not lead to liberation from suffering. For that, one must continue in developing awareness and equanimity. Without elation over pleasant sensations or depression in the fact of unpleasant ones, one understands not merely intellectually but experimentally that these sensations are nothing but manifestations of the contact of mind and matter – phenomena which are as impermanent and ephemeral as the sensations themselves. Something so ephemeral as these sensations cannot be a basis for real happiness; rather they will be a source of misery. One also starts realizing at the experimental level that the entire mental phenomenon, the physical phenomenon, and the combination of these two is certainly not “I,” not “mine,” not “my soul”. In this way, by experiencing reality as it is, in its nature, with its true characteristics, the meditator develops real wisdom (*Paññā*), and emerges from illusions and delusions. Thus, by maintaining awareness and equanimity, one gradually weakens the old habits of craving and aversion. Even when a reaction does occur, it is less intense, and passes more quickly. It no longer has such a powerful impact on the mind. The more one remains fully aware and equanimous, not allowing new reactions of craving/aversion to occur, the more one gives an opportunity to one’s stock of old reactions, of suppressed mental defilements, to rise to the conscious level of the mind, one by one, to be eradicated. Layer after layer, these past conditionings come to the surface. By maintaining equanimity, one gets them eradicated, and thus finds relief from misery. To whatever degree one gets defilements eradicated, to that degree he is free of suffering. Step by step, remaining aware and not reacting, one advances on the path, until sooner or later one reaches the stage when the entire accumulation of past reactions has been eradicated, and the habit of reacting itself has disappeared. Freed from all craving, aversion, ignorance – past, present and future – one experiences total freedom from suffering. na punyam na papam na saukhyam na duhkham na mantro na tirtham na veda na yajnah aham bhojanam naiva bhojyam na bhokta chidananda rupah shivo'ham shivo'ham I am not virtue nor vice, not pleasure or pain, I need no mantras, no pilgrimage, no scriptures or rituals, I am not the experience, not the object of experience, not even the one who experiences, I am the form of consciousness and bliss, I am Shiva (that which is not).
