Adityan, Suryan, Adhavan, Kathiravan are some of the names we worship Him with in Tamizh and they are all male names. But several decades ago the famous Tamizh poet Kanndasan (of the Cine fame) in his song in Karnan wrote as follows: In that song, in the second line he addresses Surya as Ayiram Karanhal Neeti Ananikinra *THAYEE *Potri (Thayee is mother) - meaning you embrace us all with your thousand arms - Surya's Rays. And in the 5th iine he says again *THYINUM* Paridu chalah sakalarai anaipai potri (thayinum means mother - (he says *more than the mother*, you shower love and affection) This wors iusage was pointedout by one of the female speakers in T N and she said as far as her knowledge goes nobody else has addressed Surya as a mother. Thought I will share this with you. Mother is the ultimate symbol of love, affection and is all mercy (Karunyam in Tamizh) and we beleve that in order to approach Him, we go through Her (His Consort) asd she alone can forgive us for our sins and recommend our case to Him. It is a common practice, as in most temples of the Vaishnaviates, (also in temples like the Madura Meenakshi Temple) that we visit Thiruchanur first before going to Thirumalai - Worship Thayar first and then, armed with her recommendation, go to worship Him.
