Q1         How do I know if my kidneys are doing fine?

A1          WRJ,Digital Marketer Sep 1

Monitoringthe health of your kidneys is essential for your overall well-being.
Here are some ways to assess thefunctioning of your kidneys:

Blood Pressure Monitoring: High bloodpressure can be asign of kidney problems.
Regularly check your blood pressure and consult ahealthcare professional if it
consistently measures above the recommendedlevels.

Urine analysis: A urine test can providevaluableinformation about kidney
health. It can detect the presence of blood, protein,or abnormal levels
ofcertain substances in your urine, which can indicate kidney issues.

Blood Tests: Specific blood tests, suchas serumcreatinine and estimated
glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), can assess kidneyfunction. Creatinineis a
waste product that the kidneys filter out of the blood, so elevated levelsmay
suggest kidney problems. eGFR is a measure of how well your kidneys
arefiltering waste from the blood. Your doctor can interpret these results
toassess your kidney function.

Imaging: In some cases, imaging studieslike ultrasounds, CT scans, orMRIs may
be ordered to visualize the kidneys and check for structuralabnormalities or
blockages.

Medical History and PhysicalExamination: Yourhealthcare provider may ask about
your medical history and perform a physicalexamination to identify any signs or
symptoms of kidney disease, such as swelling (edema), changes inurination, or
discomfort in the kidney area.

Risk Factors: If you have risk factorsfor kidney disease, such as diabetes, high
blood pressure, a family history of kidney disease, or a history ofcertain
medications or infections that can affect the kidneys, yourhealthcare provider
may monitor your kidney function more closely.

Lifestyle Factors: Maintaining ahealthy lifestyle can helpprotect your kidneys.
This includes staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, limiting salt
intake, exercising regularly, and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption
andtobacco use.

It's important to note thatkidney disease can progress without symptoms in its
early stages, which is whyregular check-ups and screenings are crucial. If you
have concerns about your kidney health or are at risk for kidneydisease,
consult a healthcare professional.

They can access your specific situationand recommend appropriatetests and
monitoring based on your individual health history and risk factors. Early
detection and management ofkidney issues can help prevent or slow the
progression of kidney disease.

Q2         Why does the Earth have a lot of water?

A2         Keith Jarvis,Retired Old Codger(2014–present)3y

It isa common misconception that there is a huge amount of water on Earth. It
issurprisingly small when compared to the mass of the Earth. Water is actually
2 part hydrogen to onepart oxygen. I’m not sure what other answer would make.

Belowis a graphic put out by the USGS hydrology. The largestblue ball is all
the water on Earth. The next blue ball is all the fresh wateron Earth. And that
tiny little ball that is hard to see, is all thewater in lakes & rivers. So you
can see, how little water we have comparedto the mass of Earth as a whole.

EDIT: I was advised that I hadn’tconsidered that there might be a ‘Hollow
Earth’ holding more water. Flying a few polar routes, one during theday, I will
stand by my original answer & what the USGS says.

Q3         What psychological tricks work on most people?

A3         Ananya, Nerd Apr 12

Ifyou think someone is lying, look at them and say nothing.

Ifsomeone insults you, pause for a second, look at them, and ask ‘Are you okay?’

If you’re in an argument, don’t scream, stay calm. It gives the other person the
impression that you are winning.

Whenyou want to ask for a favour, start with ‘I really need your help’. People
don’t like the guilt ofnot helping someone out.

Q4         Why must farmers wake up at 4 AM to milk the cows? Why notjust wait
until a more reasonable time, like 8 AM? Won't the cows adjust?

A4         Martin Nichols, Dairy Farmer(1995–present)May 25

Isaw an answer from India, I'll give a response from my experience as a
Canadianfarmer.

We usually get to the barn by 5am. First thing is to start the rinse cycle
ofthe washing machine which takes 15 minutes to be done. Then we get the
milking machines behind the cowsand we start to milk them. We have 55 cows and
6 machines. It takes about 1hr to fully milkthem. The whole job is done by 7am
usually. The milk truck comes to take themilk around 8am.

Ofcourse the cows would adjust to a later milking time. The problem is we'll
start the other choresof the day much later…

Mynote- In our area we get cow’s milk by small farm owners by 9 AM. We use
bothAAvin and cows milk.

Q7         What should I avoid with an enlarged prostate?

A7         Dr James Hewitt, Urologist - MD atHospitals (2011–present)Jul 30

NurturingYour Prostate Health: Foods to Avoid with an Enlarged Prostate

As a urologist, I understand theimportance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle
to support prostate health, especially for those dealing with an enlarged
prostate, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH). Making informed
dietary choices is crucial in managing BPH symptoms andpromoting overall
well-being. In this post, I'll provide valuable insights onfoods and habits to
avoid for better prostate health, backed by scientificstudies.

1. Limit Caffeine and Alcohol Intake:

Caffeine, found in coffee, tea, and somesoft drinks, as well as alcohol, can
irritate the bladder and worsen urinarysymptoms associated with an enlarged
prostate. Reducing or avoiding these beverages, especially in the evening,
mayhelp improve urinary flow and minimize nighttime trips to the bathroom.Opt
for decaffeinated alternatives or herbal teas to support bladder comfort.

2. Reduce Spicy and Acidic Foods:

Spicyfoods and those high in acidity, such as tomatoes and citrus fruits,
mayirritate the bladder and exacerbate urinary symptoms. While these foods can
be enjoyed in moderation,it's advisable to limit their intake, especially if
you notice an increase indiscomfort or urgency after consumption.

3. Watch Your Fluid Intake BeforeBedtime:

Drinkinglarge quantities of fluids close to bedtime can lead to more frequent
night timeurination, disturbing your sleep. It's essential to stay hydrated
throughout the day, but considerreducing fluid intake in the hours leading up
to bedtime to minimizedisruptions.

4. High Salt and Processed Foods:

Adiet high in salt and processed foods can lead to water retention and
bloating, which may worsen urinary symptoms in men with an enlarged prostate.
Aim to consume a balanced dietrich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and
lean proteins to support overallprostate health.

5. Avoid Holding Urine for ProlongedPeriods:

Holding urine for extended periods canput unnecessary pressure on the bladder
and prostate, potentially aggravating BPH symptoms. Listento your body's
signals and visit the restroom promptly when needed.

6. Cigarette Smoking:

Whilenot a food, it's essential to mention that cigarette smoking can
impactprostate health negatively. Studieshave suggested a link between smoking
and an increased risk of BPH developmentand progression. Quitting smoking can
not only benefit your prostatehealth but also improve overall well-being.
(Reference: Sonn, G. A., et al.(2016). Smoking and the risk of benign prostatic
hyperplasia. Clinical andTranslational Medicine, 5(1): 14. doi:
10.1186/s40169-016-0097-9)

Inconclusion, making mindful dietary choices and adopting healthy habits
cansignificantly contribute to managing symptoms and supporting the health of
anenlarged prostate. Limiting caffeine and alcohol, reducing spicy and
acidicfoods, moderating fluid intake before bedtime, and avoiding holding urine
arepractical steps to take. Additionally, cutting back on salt and processed
foodsand quitting smoking can further promote prostate well-being. Always
consultwith a urologist to develop a personalized plan for your prostate
health, considering your specific needs and medical history…
