Q5         Why was the Roman Empire so successful? What led to its rise?

A5         Alex Mann, Historian (2017–present)2h

Lesson 1: Tolerance

Beforewe go too far here, I want to clarify something: the Roman Empire was not
a progressive bastion of equalityby any measure. In fact, the Roman Empire was
a patriarchialsociety with a slave-based economy. That said, the Romans were an
uncommonly tolerantbunch for the time. More tolerant than perhaps any other
civilization in Europeat least until more modern times.

When Rome conquered territory, theywouldn’t impose their society or culture
onto the new subjects. There wouldn’t be statues built to Jupiter, and new
subjects were not forced to wear togas or vote for Questors. Every conquered
civilization, fromGreece to Egypt, could keep its religion, customs, and even
leaders.

Thistoleration had a notably positive impact. It allowed a large Italian city
torule over multiple continents. New subjects got Roman protection in the form
ofLegions and gained access to Roman markets while never feeling like
“subjects”.This enabled the Romans torule over such a diverse Empire without
facing constant revolts orindependence movements from various ethnic groups.

Note that there were revolts andindependence movements, most famously from the
Jewish peoples of Judea. This is also one of thetimes when Rome came down hard
on a specific group of people.

Hereis the real kicker and the thing that allowed Rome to succeed. When Rome
found that a culture didsomething better, there weren’t any hard feelings or
resistance. TheRomans would adopt that new, superior way of doing things
without hesitation orceremony.

Romecompletely reformed its military dozens of times- literally
top-to-bottomreforms. They took ideas from Greece, Egypt, Gaul, Britain, Spain,
NorthAfrica, and the Middle East and incorporated these ideas into their
society.

Lesson 2: By the Gladius

The Roman military was a machine unlikeanything the world had ever seen. It
wasperhaps the first military that we would understand in a modern sense-
anorganized machine-like organization that could fulfill a variety of roles.

At this time most militaries were centeredaround civilian conscripts who
werecalled up to fight on occasion. A few Kingdoms like Macedonia relied on a
largecontingent of experienced veteran warriors who made up the bulk of
theirmilitary. Rome, on the other hand, was very different.

Men were trained to fight, use tactics, andrespond to orders. Everysoldier in
the Legions was trained- something unheard of almost anywhere onearth.

TheRomans were so well trained they could build a fort in a few hours. Every
night instead of sleeping in the fieldor tents the Romans would construct a
wooden fort to retire to. This ability tobuild a fortified camp anywhere
obviously came in handy

TheRomans had the best equipment out there. Everyman had good armor, good
weapons, and ranged missiles. They were the bestinfantry on earth and could
grind away any opposing force.

IfRome had the best infantry who had the best cavalry? Well, it could be
thefamous Numidian Cavalry that accompanied Hannibal, or it could be
theCompanions that accompanied Alexander- it matters little. Numidia and
Macedoniawere parts of the Roman Empire. This meant Rome could use the cavalry
fromthese regions and utilize the best cavalry on earth alongside their
eliteinfantry.

Refer to the first lesson on tolerance. This too, was applied to the military.
If the Romans found that a group of people were great horsemen, great archers,
or great sailors they would bring these people into the militaryto make up for
any weaknesses or missing pieces.

Here is my favorite example of whatmade the Legions so unique.

Imagine you are a soldier fighting onthe front lines of battle in Roman times.
Poorly trained armies would fling themselves at the enemyin an all-out charge
to force a retreat or break enemy lines. The Romans did not do this.

When it was clear things were going to cometo blows the Romans would slow down
and walk into battle in a well-organizedrectangle. TheRomans didn’t rely on
“shock” value, they instead relied on their ability tochip away at any foe. As
the fighting started the troops at the front wouldfight for about 5 minutes and
then a whistle would blow and the guy at thefront would move to the back of the
formation while the guy behind him took upthe fighting. This rotation would
continue for the entire battle and ensurethat the guys at the front swinging
swords were always fresh and ready.

Lesson 3: Merit

The Romans loved them some meritocracy.

Youcould get lucky in Rome- you could be born to a powerful Noble family with
tiesto the government and various business interests. In many places and
timessimply having the right last name was enough to win power but not in Rome.
InRome, you had to prove it. In fact, Caesar had a serious chip on his
shoulderbecause his father had never “proven it” and thus shamed the family.

Surethere was nepotism in Rome like anywhere but you could never really use
it.Only the great rose, only the great became Consuls and Emperors. If
youconquered land or if you accomplished things when in political office then
youcould expect to achieve great things. At the same time if you were
onlyconcerned with gaining a bit of wealth or power then you could expect a
seat inthe Senate and little else.

This continued on into the Imperial age.Good Emperors ruled for decades while
bad Emperors ruled for maybe a few years. We tend tofocus on the bad Emperors
because they are hilarious but this gives the wrongimpression. Most Roman
Emperors were good- in fact, I’d say there were moregreat Emperors than bad
ones.

So why are these lessons and not justpoints? Well, because we can learn from
them. As modern humans, we are the inheritors of what Romeleft. Our
governments, our legal systems, our highways, and even our calendarsare Roman.
We can learn from what Rome did right and we can learn from whatthey did wrong.

Rome embodied the above lessons forcenturies and they ruled perhaps the
greatest Empire in all of human history because of it. However, theend of these
traits marked the end of the Empire.

For instance- the Triumph. In the days ofthe Republic and the Pinceps Imperial
era, theTriumph was the ultimate prize for any Roman. If you conquered for
Rome- if yourose high through merit- then you could request to enter Rome with
your Legionsin a Triumph from the Senate. If the Senate granted you this honor,
then youwould march into Rome in an epic parade dressed as a god and watch as
yourcountrymen bowed before your magnificence. In a society obsessed with glory
andpower, the Triumph was the ultimate display of what it meant to be “Roman.”

As the Imperial Era came Triumphs becameless common. Emperors didn’t want to
elevate Generals or commanders too highly simply becausedoing so would invite a
competitor to the throne. By the time Western Rome fell in 476 AD, the Triumph
waspractically non-existent. The extinction of this grand parade was an
ominoussymbol of what was to come. It marked Rome’s move awayfrom everything
that made them great. From that, we can learn a lot

Q7         What causes a sudden weight gain?

A7         Narayana Health,Health for all. All forhealth.1y

Sometimes, we experience a sudden gainin weight. If weput on a few extra
pounds, we may need not worry. It can be due to an unhealthydiet in the past
week or skipping the regular workout.

But then, there can be weight gain, which cannot be related to changes in diet
habits or skipping workouts over the last few days. Theseweight gains can be
frustrating as we don't need the exact cause.

Letus try to explore some of the reasons for these sudden weight gains:

High salt diet: High salt dietincreases waterretention in our body, which may
cause an increase in body weight.

Low potassium diet: Potassium is acounter sodium metal.Potassium regulates
blood pressure and helps in muscle function.

On a new medication:Some medicinescause a sudden rise in weight.Medications for
depression, heart conditions, pain, and allergies are a fewcommon examples that
may lead to weight gain.

EatingMore Than What You Need

Ifyou increase your calorie intake for a month or two, you can witness a
suddenrise in weight. The increase in daily calorie intake can be subtle, but
it canimpact your overall health significantly.

EndocrineDisorder:

Peoplewith underactive thyroid (called hypothyroidism) can experience sudden
weightgain. People withhypothyroidism may have the following symptoms:

Fatigue    Weakness   Headaches    Problemsthinking    Depression
IrritabilityDepression or anxiety

Whenyou're stressed, you experience adrenaline and cortisol surge. Cortisol
helps you store fat.Prolonged elevated levels ofcortisol can cause the body to
store more fats leading to weight gain.

Insomnia

Lack of sleep causes increased levelsof ghrelin. Ghrelinis the signal hormone
for hunger. Thus we tend to eat more when sleep deprived.
