Thanks Sir.

Agreed coffee tastes good only when taken hot but it can still be taken in
a tumbler without sipping - in small drops when it is hot.

Have you seen that in the now popular Kumbakonam Coffee Stalls that have
mushroomed all over T N, they serve hot coffee in brass tumbler and davara
- it makes it easier not to sip.

Of course I concede tastes differ but what I was trying to point out in my
earlier Mail was
Sipping, esp by elders, were unknown and frowned upon, particularly in the
brahmin families, as it was considered unacharam - not acharam.

Acharam is mainly cleanliness although it may mean more than that.

It is ok, Sir, to drink from a glass held a little above our mouth.
If it is cold water there is no problem. But the problem arises
when we have hot drinks like coffee. Coffee tastes good only
when taken steaming hot.

Thanks. Good advice.

The only issue - point 1 says keep your head down while drinking while
from the childhood we were told to drink from a glass raised above our head
- not to echil the glass - meaning the glass should not touch the lips or
our lips should not touch the glass.

 What we call in Tamizh
" thooki kudikkanum" meaning raise the glass and drink.

Otherwise we have to wash our hands thoroughly and also not keep the glass
anywhere but wash it with water immediately before placing it on the floor
or anywhere else.

Of course, we used to have eversilver tumblers and not glasses at home
which made it easy to drink by raising it.

My.mother used to be very strict on this and even now I follow this
practice except at restaurants as otherwise people look at you strangely.
If there is no one around I raise the glass and take my water or coffee.

Even senior people make fun of you if you raise the glass and drink - in
this modern world you can't be seen as a " pathaam pasali" roughly meaning
old bandicoot.

But many of the present day children don't even know how to raise the glass
and drink - it is so foreign to them, esp those who live abroad. " It is
not cool".

Respected sir/s,

One Senior Citizen of 62 years of age admitted to hospital for Choking in
his Lungs after drinking water at 11:00 pm on September 2...
He was sent to the hospital for emergency treatment and died unfortunately
at 3 am on September 3 at the age of 62.. His sudden death tells our
Classmates, Colleagues, Relatives, and Friends in this age group that no
matter what we do,
we must pay attention to two things,
.. one is to Prevent Falling,
.. and the other is to Prevent Choking.
1. After turning 60, we have to began to train ourself:.
When drinking water! Stop everything and concentrate on drinking water..
2. *The elderly are prone to choking because the throat and swallowing
muscles have degenerated and lack muscle strength*.
3. The following is information passed on to us by a doctor who is still
active in the medical field. It is worth referencing, especially if you or
your relatives or friends have become elderly:
from pneumonia caused by choking on drinking water (milk, soup, etc.),
which is a common problem among the elderly..
If there are elderly people at home,
KINDLY NOTE :
1. Use a straw while drinking water and keep your head down when
swallowing..
 2. Please drink thick soup instead of soup. Clear soup flows quickly and
it is easy to choke when breathing is not smooth..
 3. Please do not drink liquid while there is still solid food in your
mouth, and do not drink while chewing..
If the water stays in the mouth for too long, it will flow into the trachea
and cause choking if you are not careful..
 4. Do not speak or turn your head when there is food or water in your
mouth..
5. Old people do not have the same physical strength and endurance as young
people..
If liquid or food enters the trachea and is coughed out,
the face will turn red and the blood pressure will soar.
*Sometimes choking can be fatal*.
*As WE get older*, *WE must drink water very slowly,* *attentively,*
*and cautiously*.
*Friends, take care of yourselves*..
