Q1         Whydo planes stop before takeoff?

A1         VishnuRavi, Aerospace Engineer | Aviation Enthusiast & Content
Creator Aug 1

Whenit comes to ensuring a safe and smooth flight, stopping before take-off
iscrucial for several compelling reasons:

Configuration: Before embarking on their journey, planes make a momentary stop
to configure flaps. These movable wing surfacesplay a vital role in generating
the lift needed during take-off, ensuring aseamless departure.

Clearance and Communication: The expertise of a skilled pilot extends beyond
just maneuvering theaircraft. They need toobtain clearance from air traffic
controllers and engage in essential radiocommunications with the destination.
This meticulous process guaranteesthat all flight paths are secure and
coordinated.

Safety Checks: Your safety is our priority, which is why weconduct rigorous
safety checks before take-off. Particularly for pistonengines, we run them at
high power to detect any potential issues that mighthinder a safe journey.

Emergency Preparedness: In any unforeseenemergency, your experienced pilot
remains vigilant and prepared. Whether it'sengine failure, adverse weather
conditions, loss of control, or technicalmalfunctions, they can promptly abort
take-off and apply the brakes to ensureyour safety.

V1Speed: The decision to proceed with take-off or abort is influenced by the
V1speed, the maximum speed at which take-off can still be safely aborted.
Before reaching this critical point, the pilot has fullcontrol to make the
right call.

NotEvery Plane Stops: I acknowledge that not all planesrequire a complete stop
before take-off. Rolling take-offs are common, where clearance is obtainedwhile
the plane is already aligned with the runway, allowing for asmooth and
continuous departure.

The Runway's Role: The length of the runway is a pivotal factor for mostplanes
to gain sufficient speed for lift to overpower theforce of weight, allowing for
a successful take-off.

In conclusion, the brief pause before take-off allows pilots to configureflaps,
communicate effectively, ensure safety, and beprepared for emergencies. Trust
in our experienced pilots, as they makewell-informed decisions based on V1
speed and potential issues to prioritizeyour safety and deliver an unparalleled
flight experience.

Q3         Whatwould happen if the Earth abruptly stopped spinning for 42
seconds?

A3         AamirCheema, Faculty member at Monash university Australia, research
interests incomputer science Updated 7y

For a start, earth is not spinning. If it is everything including water will be
thrown off.

This answer assumes that the earthstops suddenly for 42 seconds and then starts
spinning at its normal speed.

1.If the earth stops spinning suddenly, the atmosphere will continue to spin.
This means very high speed winds, i.e.,approximately 1670 Km/hr which is
earth's rotational velocity. The winds willalso cause erosion to the earth's
crust.

2.A sudden stop of the spin will have a similar effect to when you press
brakeson a moving car. You guessed it right, you (and every other object on
this earth) will fly with a speed ofearth's rotational velocity, around 1670
km/hr. This is a very high speed but not enough tolaunch the objects in space,
so no space trip for any of us.

3. The earth will become a perfectsphere because the bulge in the earth is due
to its rotation. This bulge is along the equator and the oceans as theyare now
are due to this bulge. If there is no bulge and the earth is a perfect sphere,
the oceans willredistribute resulting in one massive supercontinent that
circles the equatorand the north and south poles will become oceans. See the
image below:

Butsince the earth will stop spinning only for 42 seconds the bulge will
notcompletely disappear before the earth starts spinning again. However, the
effect will be enough to cause flooding (infact, gigantic tsunami) but only for
42 seconds after which the bulge willreappear and the flooding will retreat
(causing more havoc).

4. You will have a day 42 secondslonger.

Edit: Thanks Pieter-Paul Kramer andMalakai Lasol Morgan for the comments that
helped to improve the answer.

Q4         Whyare petrol tankers elliptical in shape?

A4         RebeccaWilliams, Car Lover Nov 9

Petrol tankers are elliptical in shape because of several reasons relatedto
stability, safety, and efficiency. Petrol tankers are vehicles thattransport
liquid fuel from one place to another.

They have to deal with variouschallenges such as road conditions, traffic,
weather, and regulations. The shape of the tankers is veryimportant to ensure a
smooth and successful operation.

One of the main reasons why petroltankers are elliptical in shape is to lower
the center of gravity of thevehicle. The center of gravity is the pointwhere
the weight of the vehicle is balanced. The lower the center of gravity, the
more stable thevehicle is. This is especially important for petrol tankers
because theycarry a large amount of liquid that can shift and slosh inside the
tank, creating a lateral force that can cause the vehicle to tip over or
losecontrol. An elliptical shape reduces the height of the tank, whichin turn
lowers the center of gravity and increases the stability of thevehicle.

To maximize the volume of the tankwhile keeping the height under a certain
limit. Petrol tankers have to complywith the regulations and standards of the
road authorities, which specify themaximum dimensions and weight of the
vehicles. The height of the vehicle is one of the criticalfactors because it
affects the clearance under bridges, tunnels, and overheadwires. An elliptical
shape allows the tank to have a larger volume thana circular or rectangular
shape while keeping the height within the permissiblerange. This means that the
petrol tanker can carry more fuel with less trips, saving time and money.

Toimprove the aerodynamics and fuel efficiency of the vehicle. Aerodynamics is
the study of how air flows aroundobjects and affects their motion. Fuel
efficiency is the measure of how muchfuel is consumed by the vehicle per unit
of distance. Both of these factors areinfluenced by the shape of the vehicle,
which determines the amount of drag orresistance that the air exerts on the
vehicle. Drag reduces the speed andincreases the fuel consumption of the
vehicle.

An elliptical shape reduces the drag by having a smooth and streamlinedsurface
that minimizes the turbulence and pressure difference caused by theairflow.
This means that the petrol tankercan travel faster and use less fuel, reducing
the environmental impact andoperational cost.

My note- Further to reduce centre ofgravity and more control, the elliptical
tank is divided in to three in mostoil tankers.
