TOMATO

Dear friends,

Some nostalgic memories came to me about the tomato. These memories are
expandable and I thought of sharing with you. It is a time pass posting.

Gopalakrishnan 25-11-2023.

1Tomato.

I recollect an old Malayalam film incident acted by Jagati. He went to see
two girls for marriage from the same home to his cousins. Elder girl for
elder cousin and younger girl for younger cousin was the arrangement. They
were named Green tomato and red tomato. But on seeing the girls both
cousins “desired green tomato”.

While Jagati discussing about it, outside the home, father of the girls
appeared. He told in a reduced voice-Sorry...., both of my daughters do
not like any of the cousins.

There is some confusion whether tomato is a fruit or vegetable.

However it is classified under vegetable.

Long back I have read green tomato consumed more in quantity is poisonous.
Most shops will be having only ripe tomato for sale. Only thing some can be
oval vertically and some horizontally. Most prefer the horizontal oval type.

An interesting point about the prize of tomato in India. Depending on
season price can vary from 150-00 rupees to 15-00 rupees per kg. When price
goes down preference is low for tomato among home makers.

After washing the tomato is also used as it is, cut and added in salads. There
are many eating ripe tomato cut to pieces and dipped in small quantity of
sugar in place of fruits.

I made a Google search about consuming tomato

“Tomatoes, given their irritating skins and seeds, may be one reason
for irritable
bowel syndrome. And if you already have IBS, tomatoes can also trigger
bloating. Tomatoes are also one of the most common food allergens that may
cause intestinal problems (10).9 Nov 2023”

At one time there were rumours about tomato seeds causing kidney stones. I
made a Google search about it.

Some individuals think that tomato and other fruit seeds solidify in the
kidneys. Kidney stones occur as a consequence. This is a complete myth.
Tomatoes pass through our stomach and digestive system when we eat them.18

I have also made a Google search about green tomato-Are green tomatoes OK
to eat?

“There is a higher presence of this Solanina toxin in green tomatoes than
in ripe red tomatoes, making it harder to digest for humans. Therefore it
is recommended to cook them in order to sweeten the taste, de-neutralizing
the Solanina that causes the bitterness in raw green tomatoes.

In many homes dish using curd, tomato cut, ginger and small quantity of
salt, Fried curry leaves and mustards are added to it. It can be a side
dish with iddali also.

Depending on the price most restaurants have dishes added with tomato.
