Q1         Whyare tapeworms not digested in human intestines?

A1         KenSaladin, Former Premedical Mentor (1977–2017)5y

This is a very interesting questionand has been an important subject of
research in parasitology, although I think the issue was pretty much settled by
the 1970s if not earlier.

The body surface of a tapeworm is called the tegument—a layer of livingcells,
unlike the cuticle of a roundworm or the epidermis of a vertebrate. These cells
produce and retain athick carbohydrate coating called the glycocalyx on their
surface. The glycocalyx allows for the tapeworm to absorb predigestednutrients
from the host’s intestine, but at the same time resists the digestiveenzymes of
the host (1).

Thehuman’s own intestinal cells are also covered by a thick glycocalyx for
thesame purpose.

Mynote- Now I am clear, why tape worms comes from some children’s stomach.

Q2         Whatare the giant footprints in the ancient temple of Ain Dara in
Syria?

A2         SeifSaeed, Egyptian for a 1/2 century from birth1y

It is believed that it dates back tothe Hittite Empire.

If we take a closer look at the stonefloor, we can observe a pair of
footprints, followed by a single footprint, andanother single footprint at the
threshold of the main hall. The distancebetween the two single footprints is
about 30 feet.

The footprints are carved, there isno doubt about this, what is still unknown
whose these footprints were meant torepresent. Most probably, they were meant
to be an iconic representation of theresident deity.

I received this in a WhatsApp forward.I hope you enjoy it as much as Idid.

I am a poor retired bank Officer.I planned a visit to our native place in
Ratnagiri for a few days, along withmy wife.    We have one son and
twodaughters who are married & are living with their families in distantcities.

However, none of them were there tolook after our house when we proceeded on
Tour.

Therefore, we were afraid that, if athief broke into our house, the house would
be ransacked, maliciously damaged,if he rummaged through boxes, cupboards,
cabinets & the thief could damageour other stuff, if he got frustrated at NOT
finding any money.

So, on Humanitarian Grounds & inkeeping with my principle of Natural Justice
for the Oppressed, I decided tokeep some money in cash on the center table &
left a small Note for thethief:

" Dear Chor Saheb, I feel reallysorry that you have to work so hard at odd
hours to earn a livelihood, subjecting yourself to so much risk ...

see a raise despite the rise ininflation.

We don’t have any cash at home. It'sunfortunate that of all the luxurious
houses You finally took the strenuouseffort of visiting our humble house.

However, I am afraid that you mighthave wasted your time, energy & effort ...

So respecting your risky profession,I have set aside a few currency notes for
you as a Working Trip Gift.

There is a piece of Leftover cake inthe fridge, just in case you are feeling
hungry.    Dear Chor Saheb, If you wish to expand your harvest & have aRisk
Taking Appetite I can share some vital info ...

A month later, when we came back, Iwas pleasantly surprised to find that there
was

Rs.1,00,000/-in cash on the center table & a handwritten note :

Q4         Whatis life like for the average Russian?

A4         ElenaGold, Media analyst19h

This is Saratov today. People are queuing outside in thefreezing cold, to buy
cheaper eggs.

Eggs in Russia keep growing up inprice. It’s a staple food for ordinary
Russians who have to survive on meagersalaries and pensions, while Putin is
waging his war on Ukraine.

Pricesfor meat and chicken are already unaffordable for many Russians; eggs
were the staple of their rations, but now the priceof eggs is rising so fast,
some shops started selling them by a piece: so that people could buy 1–2 eggs.

Queuing to buy food… the times of theUSSR are getting closer.

Meanwhile, a pioneer camp for adultshas been opened in the town of Maykop,
Russia. It's called "Forward to theUSSR".

(The kindergarten for adults is really named“Forward to the USSR”. It’s not a
joke.)

Grown up men and women are putting on redscarves around the necks and red
forage-caps, marching and doing crafts tocelebrate the glory of communism,
which the Soviet Union promised to build for70 years, but never did.

Meanwhile, the average cost of a 1-roomapartment in Russia (most in demand type
of real estate, because ofaffordability) from 2020to November 2023 increased by
64%.

Prices of cars skyrocketed; their availability decreased. If in 2013 a citizen
could buy an average newcar for 27 average monthly wages (and an average used
car for 10 monthly wages),now it is 38 average wages for the new car (18
monthly wages for a used car).

Almost 50% of the current cost of new cars in Russia is made up ofvarious taxes
and duties — the state makes an “instant” profit.

Chinese Jetta VA3 budget sedan ispriced in China at about 890,000 rubles, but
in Russia it costs 2.25 millionrubles.

What makes up the difference in price(2.5 times) between the retail price of a
car in China and in Russia are thetaxes by the Russian state.

In 2023, Russia’s Tax Department managedto increase collections from the
population and businesses by 4 trillionrubles, chief of the tax department
Daniil Egorov proudly reported to Putin onNovember 21. Putin was delighted and
ordered not to slow down.

The whole Russia’s budget is 29trillion rubles. 4 trillion rubles in extra
taxes is 13% of that sum.

Ordinary Russians, the customers, are the ones that carry that burdenthrough
increased prices and cost of life.

Nowthat the queues to buy food are coming back, pioneer camps are being
launched, restrictions on traveling out of the country are in place, dissidents
arethrown in jails and sent to forcible psychiatric treatment, Russians can
rejoice that their dreams of bringing backthe times of the USSR are shaping
into their daily reality. And it’s still a work in progress.

Q5         Whatare some mind blowing life hacks?

A5         ShaunakBhattacharjeee, Software Engineer | Traveller | Foodie5h

Are you always tired of waiting atthe luggage belt at airports and you get
frustrated by the long wait? Alreadyyou were sitting in a confined space for
2–3 hours and can't wait to reach yourhotel and hit the bed but your check-in
bag is taking too much time to arrive. It irritates you even more when you see
other passengers receiving their bagsand the crowd at the luggage belt thinning
out. You also have this fesr whetheryour luggage for left behind at the
previous airport only!

On average, I waste at least 10minutes waiting for my check-in bag to arrive at
the baggage belt. But now Ihave started to pull off a trick and most of the
time, by the time I arrive atthe luggage belt, my bag is already there. Even if
I have to wait, it isn't for more than one or twominutes and my bag is usually
among the first ones to be loaded on the belt.

There's a very easy trick to ensureyour bag is deboarded from the flight in the
first batch and loaded on thebaggage belt before others. Whenyou check in at
the airport and submit your bag, request them to add a Fragilesticker to your
bag. If they ask what you're carrying, you can tell themthat you have a glass
itemin the bag. Bags marked with Fragile stickers are loaded onto theaircraft
at the last so that they are not placed at the bottom and the fragileitems
break.

Bags that are loaded last will be unloaded first and will be the firstones to
be sent to the conveyor belt.

So you don't have to wait at the belt for along time to collect your bag and
be on your merry way outside the airportsoon.

My note- Ihave added this QA not to make a trick to get luggage at the
earliest, but for the information, fragile item boxes will comefirst in the
luggage box. If all passengers  try this trick, airline staffwill be suspicious
and ask to open the box. Further aperson may have 2-3 boxes and all cannot be
told having fragile items.
