CULTURAL QA 09-2023-19
Q1: Whatare the examples of positive thinking?
A1: There are many inspiring stories of individuals who havetransformed their
lives through positive thinking. One such famous example well-known figure is
J.K.Rowling, who went from being a struggling single mother to the author of
theimmensely successful Harry Potter series.
J.K.Rowling isbest known for the Harry Potter
book series, which has sold more than 400million copies to date.
“It isimpossible to live without failing at something, unless
you live so cautiouslythat you might as well not have lived at all — in which
case, you fail bydefault.” — J.K. Rowling
She viewed herself as a failure. Both personally and professionally,
itwas a bitter fall for a woman who had high expectations of herself. She
knewshe loved to write- and certainly had a talent for writing- but she
wasstruggling with some internal demons.
Rowling continued to believein her idea and her ability to
turn it into something special. Over the nextfew years, she penned the first
Harry Potter story, HarryPotter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
Rowling’smanuscript was rejected by several literary agents. Finally,
thepublisher, Bloomsbury, agreed to accept Rowling’s manuscript.
Rowling’spersistence and resolve won the day. Harry Potterand the Philosopher’s
Stone was published in June of 1997.
“We do not need magic to transform ourworld. We carry all the power we
need inside ourselves already. We have thepower to imagine better.” — J.K.
Rowling.
Rowling’s inspirationcame from the writing of JRR Tolkien- in
particular The Lord of the Rings- aswell as Jane Austen, whose novel Emma had a
seminal influence on her life. Shekept reading, kept learning and had the
courage to build her back up when shehad every excuse to fold her hand.
Rowling is still writing the mostimportant story of all- her own. For
all of her remarkable accomplishments, she’s only 50 years old, with a beautiful
horizon ahead of her. Maybe there’sanother enchanted book series inside of her
creative mind. There are endlesspossibilities.
Q2 Can you tell anincident of pure humanity?
A2:Speechdelivered by Swami Vivekananda on September 11, 1893, at the first
World’s Parliament of Religions on the site of thepresent-day Art Institute
Sisters and Brothers of America,
It fills my heart with joyunspeakable to rise in response to the
warm and cordial welcome which you havegiven us. I thank you in the name of the
most ancient order of monks in theworld, I thank you in the name of the mother
of religions, and I thank you inthe name of millions and millions of Hindu
people of all classes and sects.
My thanks, also, to some of thespeakers on this platform who,
referring to the delegates from the Orient, havetold you that these men from
far-off nations may well claim the honour ofbearing to different lands the idea
of toleration. I am proud to belong to areligion which has taught the world
both tolerance and universal acceptance. Webelieve not only in universal
toleration, but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a
nation which has sheltered thepersecuted and the refugees of all religions and
all nations of the earth. I amproud to tell you that we have gathered in our
bosom the purest remnant of theIsraelites, who came to Southern India and took
refuge with us in the very yearin which their holy temple was shattered to
pieces by Roman tyranny. I amproud to belong to the religion which has
sheltered and is still fostering theremnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation. I
will quote to you, brethren, a fewlines from a hymn which I remember to have
repeated from my earliest boyhood, which is every day repeated by millions of
human beings: “As the differentstreams having their sources in different paths
which men take throughdifferent tendencies, various though they appear, crooked
or straight, all leadto Thee.”
The present convention, which is one of the most august
assemblies ever held, is in itself avindication, a declaration to the world of
the wonderful doctrine preached inthe Gita:
“Whosoever comes to Me, through whatsoever form, I reach him;all men are
struggling through paths which in the end lead to me.”
-----
Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 4, Verse 11; Ye Yatha Mam Prapadyante
ये यथा मां प्रपद्यन्ते तांस्तथैव भजाम्यहम् |
मम वर्त्मानुवर्तन्ते मनुष्या: पार्थ सर्वश: || 11||
ye yathā māṁ prapadyante tāns tathaivabhajāmyaham
mama vartmānuvartante manuṣhyāḥpārtha sarvaśhaḥ
O Arjuna! Inwhatsoever form one seeks Me, I reach him in that form, for all
mankind are butfollowing the paths I laid down for them.
-------
Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long
possessed thisbeautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence,
drenched it oftenand often with human blood, destroyed civilization and sent
whole nations todespair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human
society would be farmore advanced than it is now? But their time has come; and
I fervently hopethat the bell that tolled this morning in honour of this
convention may be thedeath-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with
the sword or with thepen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons
wending their way to thesame goal.
