Winslow, Arizona is an anonymous town in Navajo County, inhabited by
approximately 9000 people, withan area of approximately 30 km²

Between the end of the 60s and the beginning of the 70s itsuffered from a
tourist and economic collapse, due to the replacement of the famous Route66,
which crossed it, with the much more modern and functionalInterstate 40, which
instead bypassed it.

It happens that in 1972, the Eagles, a band that later became famous for its
masterpiece "HotelCalifornia", released their debut album, which included the
song"Take It Easy", written by Jackson Browne, which reads in the secondverse:

"Well, I'm standin' on a corner in Winslow Arizona, it's such a fun sight to
see.

It's a girl, mylord, in a flatbed Ford Slowin' down to take a look at me."

The success of the song and the band caused interest inWinslow to return. The
citizens, seizing the opportunity, founded the "Standin' on a
cornerfoundation", inaugurated the "Standin' on a corner park" (in thephoto),
simply a mural and a bronze statue that reproduce the verse of thesong.

The town was literally reborn and today remains one of the most popular
destinations included in theold Route 66 tour.

The park's latest "upgrade" is the addition of a second statue, a tribute to
Glenn Frey, guitarist ofthe recently deceased group.

“Do you drink this or eat this?” asked the security personnel.

It took some timefor me to understand his American accent. By the time I was
ready to answer, heshot another question.

 “Is it Indian alcohol?”

For the first timeon that trip I cursed myself for keeping that pickle bottle
in my suitcase, instead of my husband’s.

Husband, standingbeside me was watching the fun.

That was year 2006 and our first visit to USA. At immigration check, the
officer somehow spotted thisbottle in my suitcase in the scanner.

He opened thesuitcase and took out the mango pickle bottle which I had very
carefully sealedwith lot of cellotape.

After examining itunder a light, his first question was “Do you drink this or
eat this?”

Yes, the mangopieces were less and juice was more in that pickle. The mango
pieces were barely visible in the bottle.

His secondquestion was “Is it Indian alcohol?”

To this I managedto answer “No that isIndian pickle”

He lookedperplexed and examined it more carefully by rotating it in his hand.
While rotating he could see themango pieces.

“So this is Indian pickle!” he said with asmile.

My anxiety vanished. “Yes it is” I said.

“Ok, you can takethis” he said.

I heaved a sigh ofrelief. Later that night my son and daughter in law enjoyed
the pickle withcurd rice while we narrated the incident at the immigration
security check.

I enjoyed the two humours told in this incident.
