Q2         WasGeorge Washington really offered the opportunity to become King
(in the senseof absolute monarch)?

A2         SilkRoad, AI Expert2h

George Washington was not offered the opportunity to become king. He wasnot
even offered the opportunity to become a sort of monarch.

He was offered the opportunity toconsider the possibility of maybe becoming a
sort of monarch.

And he said no.

This is one of those myths thatsounds so good, so heroic, so American, that
people just can't resist repeatingit.

But the truth is much morecomplicated, and much more interesting.

The myth goes something like this: In1782, after the victory at Yorktown but
before the Treaty of Paris, somediscontented officers in the Continental Army
wanted to overthrow the weak andineffective Congress and establish a military
dictatorship.

They approached Washington, their beloved commander-in-chief, and askedhim to
lead them in this coup. They offered him a crown, or something close to it.

Washington, being thenoble and virtuous man that he was, refused to betray the
cause of liberty and democracy.

He rebuked the conspirators, and savedthe republic from tyranny.

Sounds awesome, right? Too bad it'smostly bullshit.

Here's what really happened: In 1782,after the victory at Yorktown but before
the Treaty of Paris, some discontented officers in the Continental Army were
frustrated with thelack of pay and pensions from Congress.

They were also worried about thefuture of the new nation, and whether it could
survive without a strong centralgovernment.

One of these officers was LewisNicola, a colonel of the Invalid Regiment.
Nicola was a well-read andwell-travelled man, who had served in various armies
in Europe and America.

He had some radical ideas aboutpolitical reform, and he decided to share them
with Washington.

Nicola wrote a letter to Washington, dated May 22, 1782, in whichhe suggested
that the best form of government for America would be a mixedconstitution,
similar to that of Great Britain, but with some modifications.

Heproposed that instead of a hereditary king, there should be an elective one,
chosenby the people for life.

He argued that this would providestability, unity, and respect for the new
nation, and that it would prevent thedangers of faction, anarchy, or tyranny.

He also hinted that Washington wouldbe the most suitable candidate for such a
position, as he had the trust andadmiration of the army and the people.

He wrote,

"The same abilities which haveled us, through difficulties apparently
insurmountable by human power, tovictory and glory, those qualities that have
obtained the universal esteem andveneration of an army, would be most likely to
conduct and direct us in thesmoother paths of peace."

Washington was shocked andappalled by Nicola's letter. He considered it a gross
insult to his character andhis devotion to the republican cause.

He replied to Nicola on the same day, rejecting his proposal in the strongest
terms. He wrote,

"Be assured, Sir, no occurrence in the course of the War, has givenme more
painful sensations than your information of there being such ideasexisting in
the Army as you have expressed, & I must view with abhorrence, and reprehend
with severity."

He also warned Nicola to nevermention such a scheme again, and to discourage
anyone else from entertainingit.

He said,

"Let me conjure you then, if youhave any regard for your Country, concern for
yourself or posterity, or respectfor me, to banish these thoughts from your
Mind, and never communicate, as fromyourself, or any one else, a sentiment of
the like nature."

Washington's response was decisive andunequivocal.

He did not want to be a king, oranything close to it.

He wanted to be a citizen of a freeand independent republic, governed by the
people and the law.    He had fought for this ideal for six years, and he was
not about to betray it for personal glory or power.    He was a true patriot,
and a true hero.

The myth is not entirelyfalse.

Washington did reject the idea ofbecoming a monarch.    But he was not offered
a crown,or a coup.    He was offered aletter, and a suggestion.    And he
saidno.

Q3         Whichgod incarnation is Manthara in Ramayana?

A3         NeetaKanojia,13h

Manthara was not anincarnation of God but was the daughter of demons.

In her previous life, Manthara wasthe granddaughter ofPrahlad and the daughter
of Virochana.

Manthara's father Virochana was a demon king and agreat donor. Even in her
previous life, Manthara's name was Manthara and she also had a younger brother,
Bali. It is said thatseeing Virochana's charitable nature, the Gods tricked him
into demanding hisentire life for the Brahmins and Virochana donated his entire
life to the Brahmins due to which he died

Thenall the demons went to Manthara and requested Manthara to protect them.
Mantharasent his powerful demons to fight the gods but when the demons lost to
thegods, Manthara became angry and tied the gods with a snake loop. Lord
Vishnugave power and weapons to Lord Indra due to which Lord Indra freed all
the gods from the snake's trapby cutting it and made Manthara unconscious with
the blow of his power due towhich Manthara became crippled after regaining
consciousness.

And after death in her life,Manthara took her new birth in the womb of Kaikai
and became Kaikai's maid andcame to Ayodhya with Kaikai. And thenwith his
bitter words he corrupted the mind of Kaikeyi and instilled hatred towards Lord
Shri Ram and sent Shri Ram into exilefor 14 years and fulfilled his revenge of
his previous birth. But inthis also Lord Vishnu showed his leela and did many
such works during the 14years of exile due to which he came in incarnation and
killed Ravanaand when Shri Ram, Sita Maiya and Lakshman returned back to
Ayodhya, then alsofrom Manthara. Met him and forgave her all his mistakes.

(But it has also been mentioned at many places that Lord Vishnu had sentApsara
to KK on the basis of a mantra so that she could send Shri Ram intoexile for 14
years and during this, Shri Ram could kill Ravana and destroy thedemons.)

Q4         is normal in Mongolia, but weird in other places?

A4       Anand Nyamdavaa ,Updated 3y

The first time a foreigner said thisto me, I didn’t really think much about it.
But I kept hearing this fromforeigners, so I started noticing.Foreigners,
especiallyAsians, would often wonder why Mongolian kids don’t cry much.Once I
started having my own kids, I would look at kids from other countriesand
compare. They did reallycry less, sometimes much less.

When my kids play games and fall, thefirst thing I would automatically say is:
Өөрөө унасан хүүхэд уйлдаггүй. Which means don’t cry, ifyou fall yourself. Kind
of its your own fault that you fell, so don’t cry. Thisis repeated to all
Mongolian kids, both boys and girls. So kids from very young age understand
that theywill get no sympathy for crying, so they don’t.

You would rarely see Mongolianparents hugging and kissing their hands or legs
looking concerned. You wouldrather see mothers saying: Өөрөө унасан хүүхэд
уйлдаггүй

Purchased a computer in 1999...

Yes this was entirely for me. Husband was not at all interested to use it.

I was delighted when I would get instant reply from myson studying in USA.
There was no need for waiting for his phone calls fordays.

Photo editing software was like a boon for me. I scannedand restored all the
old photos in my house. This made me learn somethingexciting, at the same time
giving me the nostalgic moments seeing all those oldphotos again.

My father’s photo taken in 1953:Afterrestoration:(Not attached)

Later I learned programming (VisualFoxpro). This greatly increased my value in
the office.

I could collect hundreds of myfavourite songs from the internet and made tens
of playlists in my MP3 player, because of the computer.

I learned audio editing a bit.(Ipurchased Wavepad Sound Editor). This was
really a fun.

Then I tried my hand a bit in videoediting. Though I did not become
professional, I enjoyed editing videos takenwith our camcorder.(A software
provided along with the camcorder).

>From 1999 till date, I changed sixcomputers.

Last but not the least this computergave me opportunity to write on Quora and
get acquainted with many wonderfulpeople across the globe.

My note- Earliest computers from HP cost about 80000-00 rupees did last maximum
7-8 years. Assembledcomputers cost only around 40000-00 rupees. My computer
mother board fault wasreplaced in a month. Power unit problem was solved by a
new unit purchased andprovided. I could get it in Dubai. By 2007, I started
using lap top( veryheavy) brought  and complimented by sonin law.

I used the computer 80% for completing office works at homeand watching TV
using TV card.I learnt Microsoft office works by my own usingat Office
computer.
