The most revered late Paramaachaarya of Kaanchi Kaamakoti Peetam, in Vol II of
his extensive treatise "Deivaththin Kural", in the section headed "vedam", in
the subsection headed "vedamum thamizhnaadum", sets out the six vital tasks
assigned to braahmanas:- adhyayanam (learning and chanting vedams);
adhyaapanam (teaching vedam to qualified students); yajanam (performing own
fire-sarifices); yaajanam (performing sacrifices for others, on request);
daanam (paying dakshinas to priests); prathigraham (accepting dakshina for
vedic services to others).
Some time ago, I described how I performed Shiva (panchaayathana) pooja at home
after a long lapse. This was in part fulfilment of the advice of the same late
Kaanchi Periyavaal that, in addition to thri-kaala sandhya-vandanam after bath,
braahmanas should perform daily "devathaa-poojanam".
Today, I am happy to share with you the heart-warming news that I have just
completed the paaraayanam of the entire thaiththireeya samhitha of the krishna
yajur-vedam, to which I belong.
The samhitha consists of 44 chapters.
The local braahmana sabha, through its three shaasthrigals recruited from South
India, conducts veda paarayanams every year from mid-November to end-December
in braahmana households. The programme is for one chapter to be chanted each
day for 44 days.
Before Covid-19 intervened and put a brake on such activities, I used to join
the three shaasthrigals in actively chanting the annual veda paaraayanams in
braahmana households without fail.
During Covid-19, when restricted to indoor activities, I continued on my own,
and succeeded in chanting all 44 chapters in 11 days, at the rate of four
chapters per day. It was exhilarating and immensely satisfying.
On 1 March 2024, I started again. Today, 8 March 2024, I completed paaraayanam
of all 44 chapters in just eight days, WITHOUT CUTTING CORNERS.
Namaskaarams to elders, and aasheervaathams to all others.
