Rspected Sir/s,

SUBJECT:WOLD WATER DAY

Wateris one of the most precious natural resources in the world. Yet, the world
ismoving towards an inevitable water crisis in much geographically and
globally. As governments seek to conserve water, the focus is on determining
the water usage of diverseindustries to discover how and where water
consumption can be minimised.

In theoverall context of water consumption, the
constructionsector ranks as one of the most water-intensive industries in the
world. For example, every square metre of wall construction needs, on
average,350 litres of water. Given this background, buildings and other
structural projects account for more than 10% of the total water consumption.

Be it MOONor MARS,a key finding exploring humans always hope to make
isevidence that water exists there. Forwater could tell if life is possible! But
given that humans aren’t mass migrating to another celestialbody anytime soon,
weshould mark World Water Day by starting to credibly conserve what water the
only planet known to sustain lifein our solar system has. Lestwe want to go the
Bengaluru way

In INDIA, as raw wateris mainly sourced from groundwater, several
citiesand municipal corporations are facing a big gap in the demand and supply
ofwater due to the overexploitation of groundwater reserves. Typically, the
maximum use of water occurs during thepreparation of sand and cement mortar as
well as in the curing of walls, beforeand after plastering.

BENGALURU FACING SEVERE WATER CRISIS

It’sa stark World Water Day warning.

A CITY that drinks water from distantdistricts while killing its own water
sources.Authorities have been asleep at the wheel and citizenry hasn’t jolted
themawake.

More than two and a half centuries ago, Americanstatesman Benjamin Franklin
asserted: “When the well is dry, we know the worthof water.” In 2024, his
statement resonates strongly with every resident fromKarnataka’s capital city,
Bengaluru, which is confronting its most severe watercrisis in decades.
Considering its population of more than 14 million people, the tech city has a
minimum requirement of two billion litres of water per day.Of this, more than
70% is sourced from the river Cauvery. The balance is metfrom groundwater drawn
through bore wells.

However,a weak monsoon in 2023 led to the depletion of groundwater
levels. To overcome this, deeper bore wells are being dug. Nonetheless, the city
is facing a daily shortfall of 200million litres of water. Arecent report from
the Indian Institute of Science reveals that Bengaluru’s water spread has
dropped drastically to 696hectares in 2023 from 2,324 hectares in 1973.
Itswater surface is said to have shrunk sharply due to widespreadconstruction
and concretization over the past 50 years. The major decline in water surface
area has also affected Bengaluru’sgroundwater recharge capability.

In this context, it’s important to note that traditional methods
ofconstruction exacerbate the water crisis. Whether it is buildings, schools,
hospitals or warehouses, all concrete structures need a minimal amountof water
during construction. While some may advocate aban on construction, this is not
a viable solution for a country that isundergoing a development drive during
the past decade.

Multiple Benefits of Pre-Engineered Building Construction

Instad,a more practical approach is necessary that strikes a delicate balance
betweendevelopment needs and environmental concerns. In this scenario, the
Pre-Engineered Building (PEB) construction industrystands as a bright beacon of
hope, with its moresustainable practices supported by a substantiallylower rate
of water consumption.

AsPEB construction (also termeddry construction) needs less time,
waterrequirement for cleaning, mixing concrete and other activities is
reducedsignificantly. Compared to conventional construction, the other
benefitsof PEB comprise greater control over construction time,
cost-effectiveness,better quality control, higher worker safety and, thereby,
greater labourproductivity. For example, it permits 30% to 50%faster time in
construction, unlike conventional or onsite construction.

Thanks to theintegrated processes in PEB, such as modular construction, it
avoids subcontractingcosts arising from more onsite labour. PEB alsocurb
greenhouse gas emissions while reducing energy and resource scarcity, besides
ensuring less damage to human and ecosystem well-being.

       Furthermore,its water-efficient characteristics such as
rainwaterharvesting systems and low-flow plumbing fixtures curb consumption and
help in rainwater utilization. In Bengaluru and otherwater-scarce cities,
rainwater harvesting is indispensable to mitigatewater-related worries.

      Conversely,traditional construction methods seem increasingly
unsustainablebecause of the amount of water wasted. The wasteful practices
include hosingdown surfaces and using open systems to supply water.

Rationale for Promoting Dry Construction

PEB structuresapart, other forms of dry construction also require much less
water, unlike thewet method. As the name indicates, dry construction needs no
water at the sitesince poured cement or concrete is not required. Dry
construction usesInsulated Panels or Single Skin Sheet walls and Steel
frameworks that can beassembled quickly onsite, withoutusing a single drop of
water.

Keeping in mind the severe water scarcity in multiple regions, the construction
industry must adopt sustainable techniques to conserve waterand other scarce
resources while developing projects. Herein, since PEBand other dry techniques
need much less water, they also ensureeffective water management during
construction.

WORLDWATER DAY, celebrated on March 22every year, is an occasion to realise
theimportance of freshwater, especially this year amid the ongoing Bengaluru
watercrisis.

Thetech hub is facing an acute water shortage due to failed monsoons and drying
groundwaterresources.

World Water Day was designated by the United Nations
General Assembly in 1993.Since then, World Water Day has been celebrated
annually to raise awarenessabout water-

related issues and advocatefor sustainable water management practices around
the globe.
Thetheme for World Water Day 2024
is “Water for Peace”. Itfocuses on the vital role that water plays in the
stability of world politicsand peace. It also aims to shed light on the
pressing issues centred aroundwater worldwide.

As World Water Day is commemorated, it’s time that all
stakeholders, including individuals, pledge to use dry construction methods
while also inspiringeverybody else to embrace water-saving practices. The
future of upcominggenerations and the planet depends on our universal
commitment.

·       As World WaterDay is commemorated, it’s time that all stakeholders,
including individuals, pledge to use dry construction methods while also
inspiring everybody else toembrace water-saving practices. The future of
upcoming generations and theplanet depends on our universal commitment.

Only 2.5 per cent of theEarth’s water is classified as fresh. The water crisis
is a big issue in Indiaas per the 2019 Niti Aayog report. Despite accommodating
17 per cent of theglobal population, India possesses only 4 per cent of
theplanet’s freshwater resources. World Water Day, commemorated every March 22,
serves tounderscore the criticality of fresh water. Below, we look at the theme
of thisyear’s event, its history, and its significance. Additionally,
implementingfive straightforward steps to conserve water can significantly
address thispressing issue.

5 Steps to Conserve Water:

1. Turn off the tap while washing dishes instead of letting it runcontinuously.

2. Close taps tightly when not in use; particularly whilebrushing teeth or
lathering soap.

3. Regularly check and repair any leaks in toilet cisterns or washtanks to
prevent water wastage.

4. Keep showers brief, and consider turning off theshowerhead while applying
soap or shampoo to conserve water.

5. Repurpose stale water for activities such as watering plants orflushing
toilets to minimise waste.

CLIPPINGS COMMEMORATING WORLDWATER DAY

·

For a city that fetches most of its drinking water from farawaydistricts,
Bengaluru should be more protective of its life-drink. Instead, it’sbusy
killing its lakes, letting rainwater into drains, and polluting depletingits
groundwater.
