Thanks Sri G K.

My comment is restricted to the 3rd stage of life - Vanaprastha.

Many people, esp the seniors, criticize the younger ones for failing to
take care of their parents as many of their children are abroad or are in
different parts of India.

Some of these seniors take offence to being left in a very cosy,
comfortable sr citizens homes where everything is provided for with only
the Bill's need to be paid every month.

Instead of appreciating their children for providing them with all the
material comforts and also being in touch with them thru video
conferencing, some find fault with their children. More so their relatives.

We need to look at these sr citizens homes as
Modern Day Vanaprastha.

We have lived our lives and let our children lead theirs.

Vanaprastha teaches us to learn detachment and let us grab that opportunity.

It would be interesting to note how many of these seniors who expect their
children to be with them, were with their parents?

CREMATION AND FOUR STAGES OF LIFE

Dear friends,

While defining the four stages of life, the last two stages are vanaprastha
and Sanyasa. We have example of Kunthi along with Gandhari and
Dhritharashta going for Vanaprastha after a time Dharamaputhra started
ruling the country after the war, as told in the Mahabharatha. We know
during Vanaprastha, all those died. No anthyakarmas were performed by
Pandavas.

I made a Google search about Antyakarmas

When did cremation start in Hinduism?

Early Cremations in India

>From the time of the Rig Veda, which contains passages possibly written as
far aback as 2000 B.C., Hindus have cremated the dead although small
children and ascetic were sometimes buried and low caste members sometimes
buried their own.

What are the stages of life according to Vedas?

The four asramas are: Brahmacharya (student), Gá¹›hastha (householder),
Vanaprastha (forest walker/forest dweller), and Sannyasa (renunciate). The
Asrama system is one facet of the Dharma concept in Hinduism.

We know all Vedas were there already and codified by Veda vyasa in to four-
Rig, Yajur, Sama and Adharva. This was during Dwaparayuga.

My doubt is antyakarmas are done to the deceased elders. The procedures are
told for it. But according to four stages of Hinduism the last two are
Vanaprastham and Sanyasam. If one goes for Vanaprastham, his children
cannot understand where he was at the time of death and cannot perform
anthyakarmas.

So the antyakarmas were done only for those who did not proceed to
vanaprastha and had death before that.

In kaliyuga, those who are going to Vanaprastha and Sanyasa are very few.
So we perform antheyshti for all the diseased.

But how Anthyakarmas are performed for ascetics now?

Can any learned member clarify about this aspect in brief paragraphs?
