Q1         How old are you and how do you feelabout your age, aging, your
future?

A1          Ken Saladin, Professor of biology,emeritus 1y

Here’s atoast to guys like Nick Schön.

Me, a coupleweeks shy of 73 and feeling about the same as Nick describes
himself.

So many ofmy high-school graduation peers, and friends and colleagues younger
than I byten years or more, look so much older. I see on Facebook pictures of
women Iused to passionately yearn for when we were high-school classmates, and
theylook like my grandmother now. My inner age is still about 48. In
calendaryears, though, I would say that on the whole, my 60s were my best
decade inoverall health, productivity, and life satisfaction.

My future?Well, I have lived enough. I will enjoy what’s left and the
privileges of age, material comfort, and retirement, but I’m prepared to go
without fear or regretwhenever the time comes. I expect and hope for no
conscious life after that;all that will remain of me is my reputation, other
people’s memories, somelegacies I’ve created for posterity, and a paltry few
physical things that noone will want. Doesn’t bother me at all. I long ago
achieved a somewhat Zenlikesense of nonattachment to things.

When I’vehad a long, busy, productive day and I go to bed weary with endeavor,
all Iwant is release from it all—solid sleep, not even caring about whether I
haveany nice dreams during the night or wake up the next morning to a new
day’sagenda. That’s how I feel about my final sleep. All I want then is release
andoblivion—no more worries; no more obligations and to-do lists; no more sense
ofpast, present, and future; no new agenda waiting for me “on the other side.”

Q2         What is a funny story that happened dueto language barrier?

My sistermarried an Australian so a bunch of Australians flew up to attend the
wedding.

As adigression, both my parents grew up on farms and I always thought it would
befun to farm.

At thewedding rehearsal, for some reason I started talking about farming with
thisAustralian fellow.

We had quitea lengthy conversation about Australian farming techniques. I was
surprised to learnthat they used helicopters! I reasoned that this must be the
case because it issuch a dry place, maybe they need lots of space for cattle to
feed and in orderto round them up they must need helicopters.

Finally, atthe very end of the conversation, something finally clicked and we
were able tofigure it out.

I wastalking the whole time about farming.

He wastalking about practices of firemen.

Q3         What is one fact that you know is truebut still blows your mind?

A3          Shivani Kulkarni, Studied at BusinessManagement39m

Ok so thisis interesting. One common sight we all see in India is “Horn Ok
Please”written on back of many trucks. The reason behind this is interesting.
DuringWorld War 2 there were shortages of diesel all over the world and not
suprisingit affected India too. So the people in our country started using
“KEROSENE”.So the “OK” in Horn Ok Please is - “ON KEROSENE”. So it reads like
“HornPlease, On Kerosene”. So that people behind can maintain a certain
distancefrom the trucks. This fact still blows up my mind.

Q4         What is the most amazing or shockingthing you know that most people

Q5         What's the best excuse for being lateyou've ever heard?

A5          Gary Pennington,6h

This wasfrom a young lad who worked directly under my supervision. He turned up
latefor work everyday, usually it was about 15 minutes or so. I wasn’t
reallybothered to be honest, but orders from on high (HR) had me bringing him
in fora brief verbal warning as it had gone on for a couple of months.

I sat himdown and we talked about the reasons behind his lateness everyday. The
lad washonest and he had no problem in telling me the reason why he was late
wasbecause his Mum didn’t get him up on time in the morning.

Yeah,really…

Afterexplaining the fact that it wasn’t up to his Mum to get him to work on
time, our chat literally flew over his head. He continued to be late everyday
afterit.

I decided touse a bit of ‘kidology’ to make it right. This lad’s Mum was his
emergencycontact, so I phoned her. After a chat explaining about his lateness
everyday, his verbal warning and possible written warning incoming, she agreed
to help meout. She went around the house and changed all her clocks to show the
time tobe 20 minutes later than the actual time it was.

Consequently, the very next morning, he turned up 5 minutes early and he
couldn’t understandwhy.

After a weekof this, HR was off his back and they thought the situation had
been resolved.I had actually applied for a role elsewhere and had already
accepted it, so wasmoving on anyway.

It was up tomy replacement to deal with the issue now but it reasonably patched
a hole forme and kept this lad in work for a while longer.

He no longerworks there now. I can’t think why!
