Incidentally after finishing my dinner at 9 AM, I happened to read this post by Rangaaraajanji. A very good article. But many points are left out of which I am not going to elaborate as reading is the taste of the individual. However, just at the dining table My grandson around 8: 45 PM raised a question: Thatha why should we read? coincidental? I spoke to him and he was so absorbed into it he said he will take all points in his reading habits. As a kid of 7 year old, I started reading not only text books, but all old newspapers came with the packing; magazines; books from the library; there were only 8 or 9 students who went to RKM library to ask for books and I am one of them. In the higher standard, I started learning Hindi, German, French apart from school Sanskrit, English and Tamil. Later in the office I learnt telugu and from my grand daughter some spanish too. I wanted to learn Chinese and Japanese and secured a software of 52 languages but could not devote my time. My mother and wife taught me malayalam. And right from school, I had a dozen friends home in which 3 had a big library; and all the three libs I could finish in about 7 or 8 years and also got as compliments a few books which i desired then. My father a voracious reader had a lot of books of different kinds adding fuel to my interest; and i was not a mere bookworm; i was in cricket 1st division league; i kasturi cup chess tournament I won; a good Mandaveli club table tennis player where a few whom with I played later became champions including the chandrasekar who sued the apollo for wrong surgery and made him bedridden. A good bridge player. School and college team captain as well. So I spent my time wisely. And I invariably visit libraries ( was a member in connemara through my uncle sandilyan and British council and USIS at chennai. I never miss any book exhibition if I am around that place; and purchase of books is my habit. Every book I read will have a lot of jottings and notes taken apart from xeroxed files as extracts. Reading is in nature. If one does not read a little or hear a little music, he is a dead devil in my account. I never knew for nearly a year I was using only my right eye fully with vision decrease in the left; when spotted for cataract, the first question i asked agarwal was, will i be able to read again? And by Perumal grace my mind is functioning well and reading habit continues; the best part of my American life itself is LIBRARIES HERE. 50 books one can pick up for 3 week and with extensions and Video Vhs and cassettes limited number which facility is not there anywhere in India. My laptop, my hours and my time are well spent over knowhow. The kural I learnt when U was 8 year old still flashes when I need to; and websites make my work simple. Fools may talk a lot and blind may not see; they are recluse. Reading maketh a man Francis Bacon. And aas long as Perumal gives me that boon to read well can we thank only HIM? K R IRS 24424
