Q3         What are some INTERESTING  information about British Collector named
Rous Peter who was appointed as Collectorof Madurai from 1812 to 1828.

A3          Chauhan Babu Nath, Apr 17

*Afterretirement, Peter refused to go back to England. He stayed in Madurai.
His lastwish was that he should  beburied withhis eyes facing Goddess
Meenakshi. His wish was fulfilled and he was buried withhis face towards the
temple.

Every Yearone British family from England visit the temple to take Darshan of
MotherGoddess Meenakshi .

There is amost interesting story. Connected between British collector and
Meenakshi Amman.

BritishCollector named Rous Peter was appointed as Collector of Madurai from
1812 to1828.

Though aChristian by faith, he respected all faiths including Hinduism and also
honoredlocal practices.

CollectorPeter was the temple administrator of the Meenakshi Amman Temple and
conductedall his duties with sincerity and honesty and respected the
religioussentiments of all people.

CollectorRous Peter respected and treated people of all faiths equally and this
noble traitearned him the popular nickname *‘Peter Pandian'*

*GoddessMeenakshi Amman Temple* was situated between Collector Peter's
residence andoffice.

Everyday heused to go to the office by his horse and while crossing the temple,
he gotdown from his horse, removed the hat and his shoes and crossed the whole
pathon his foot. Through this small gesture he expressed his reverence to
theGoddess!*

One daythere was a heavy downpour in Madurai city and River Vaigai was in spate.

Collectorwas sleeping in his residence and was suddenly disturbed and woken up
by thesound of anklets and he left his bed to find out from where the sound had
came.

He saw asmall girl wearing pattuvastrams (silk garments) and precious ornaments
andaddressing him as *'Petercome this way'.*

And he cameout to follow her and was running behind the little girl to find out
who shewas! As he came out of the house and was running, he was shocked as he
turnedto see behind him, his residence (whole bungalow) being washed away by
the floodwaters of River Vaigai!

He turned tofollow the girl but she disappeared into thin air! He saw that the
girl ranwithout any shoes and was wearing anklets.*

He beleivedthat his devotion for Mother *Goddess Meenakshi* had saved his life.

Later, hewished to give a gift to Lord Meenakshi Amman & consulted the priest
oftemple and ordered for *a pair of golden shoes for Goddess Meenakshi Amman*.

It is thusthat the pair of Paadhukams consisting of *412 rubies, *72
emeralds,*and *80diamonds* were made and donated to the temple.

His name wassculpted as "Peter" on sole of the shoes.

Till thisday the pair of Paadhukams are known as *'Peter Paadhukam'*

Every yearat the time of 'Chaitra Festival', utsava moorthy of Goddess
Meenakshi Amman isdecorated with the Padukams.

He alsowished that after his death he should be buried in a position that
enabled hiseyes to face the temple. It is interesting to note that Rous Peter’s
grave ispositioned the way he wished while the pther graves faces the other way.

This is theincidence that had happened 200 years back. Every year descendant of
Raus Peterfamily visits the temple.

Q5         What are some amazing facts abouthumans?

A5           Qadeer, BS in Biochemistry, PMAS AridAgriculture University
Rawalpindi Updated 2y

Hmm, let metell you some cool facts about human evolution.

White skin is younger than agriculture revolution

The whitecolor of European human skin is less than 10,000 years old. Today we
know that8500 years ago, most of humans in Europe still had black skin. They
lackedversions of two genes—SLC24A5 and SLC45A2—that lead to depigmentation
and, therefore, pale skin in Europeans today. So, we can say that white skin
isyounger than agriculture revolution.[1]

Blue eyes are older than white skin

Yes, youread that right, the blue eyes in humans are older than white skin
color.Researchers extracted hunter gatherer dubbed La Brana 1 DNA, unearthed
from thenorth-west of Spain. They came to know that, this person had black skin
yetblue eyes. [2]

Lactose tolerance is of same age as of white skin

White skinevolved round about 8–10 thousand years ago and at the same time
humans evolvedlactose tolerance. At this period of time a great famine hit
turkey and neighboringarea which let thousands to die, the rest tried to stay
alive for years whiledrinking milk. Normally human adults lose lactose
tolerance but due to thisselection pressure they turned their genes back on. [3]

Still morethan 60% of human population is lactose intolerant.

Humans didn't domesticated cats

According tothe prehistoric DNA of wild and domesticated cats we came to know
that there isno much difference in between them. This gives us hint that we did
notdomesticated cats rather they domesticated themselves .[4]

We are losing wisdom teeth

Toady morethan 22% of population do not have wisdom teeth. Why? Because they
didn't hadany function in our body so selection process had threw them away. We
have beenreducing our denatl size since astralopiths and it's been ~2 million
yearssince we have been doing this. [5]
