Becoming a Grandmaster (GM) in chess is one of the highest achievements in the game and requires an exceptional level of skill, dedication, and talent. It's not easy to become a GM, and for most people, it's an extremely challenging and arduous journey that takes many years of hard work and study. When i was p[laying the kasturi cup tournaments in the library building in front of Ananda vikatan office Mount Road or the Hindu office, there used to be hardly 20-25 youngsters and we did multiple rounds in the tournaments. Today only one round was done for elimination at large. Then only the name Aeron was alone known. Today a family is there including many women. Then Booby fisher found it too difficult to get the GM norm from the Russian federations who had the control. I had visited many times the Russian embassy in Radhakrishnan salai and junction of Nilgiris junction. It was a breaking point at 14 years, Fisher beat Boris Spassky in 1972 and took control from Russia to the USA. That alone brought so much open ground for nations to rise in fifty years. Apart from chess, the tough mind game is CONTRACT BRIDGE and we, my partner is no more, won the TVS cup. Today while a small group is trying to learn everything, still the majority is lying over without any interest.
Here are some reasons why becoming a chess GM is not easy: 1. To become a GM, one must reach a FIDE rating of 2500 or above. Achieving and maintaining such a high rating requires a deep understanding of chess principles, advanced strategic and tactical skills, and the ability to compete successfully against other highly skilled players. 2. Becoming a GM typically takes many years of consistent and intense practice. Players often start at a young age and devote countless hours to studying chess theory, analyzing games, practicing tactics, and playing in tournaments. And the clock and brain management together is tough. Many have lost the game on time factors as they were unable to make the required moves , within the time. 3. The competition in the chess world is fierce, with many talented players vying for the title of GM. Tournaments are highly competitive, and even minor mistakes can be costly. As in cricket one ball could stump you out, so also ,one move bad of you or good of the opponent might seal the game. 4. Pursuing a career in chess can be financially challenging, especially for players who do not have strong financial support. Traveling to tournaments, hiring coaches, and accessing resources for study can be expensive. Money apart, the availability of perfect opponents to practice is too difficult. 5. The mental and psychological pressure of competing at a high level can be intense. Players must cope with stress, manage their emotions, and maintain focus and concentration over long periods of time. Only a cool master can succeed. While becoming a GM is undoubtedly difficult, it is not impossible. With passion, determination, and the right resources and support, aspiring players can work towards achieving this prestigious title. However, it's essential to understand that only a small percentage of chess players ever reach this level, and success often requires a combination of talent, hard work, and opportunity.
